Jeff, this is an incredibly well taught lesson. Thanks for helping me iron out some hang ups I had! “Multiply by two to get in, divide by two to get out”. THAT is the mental picture I needed. Thanks! Nice verse at the end too buddy. -Destin

Was thinking the same thing. I completed my degree 10 years ago, just needed a recap. 30 minutes seems long but what he managed to explain in that time would normally take a few 90 minute lectures.

The charisma here makes learning material so much more interesting. No matter how interested people are in a subject, it's so much harder to learn when the lectures are dry and boring. I always come back here when I'm confused becuase the energy really helps make the information way more approachable.

A prismatic concrete column of mass density ρ supports its own weight, as shown in the figure. (Assume that the solid is subjected to a uniform gravitational body force of magnitude g per unit mass). Suppose that the concrete contains a large number of randomly oriented microcracks. A crack which lies at an angle θ to the horizontal will propagate if |Tt|+μTn>τ0 where μ is the friction coefficient between the faces of the crack and τ0 is a critical shear stress that is related to the size of the microcracks and the fracture toughness of the concrete, and is therefore a material property. By assuming that μ=0.7, using Mohr's circle, find the orientation of the microcrack that is most likely to propagate. Hence, find an expression for the maximum possible height of the column.

Great video. One minor correction on the angle shift transformation. It's 75.74 instead of 75.47 which throws the calculations off a tad. The last 2 digits may have swapped places. Still, a better demonstration than I had in my own class, which is why I am here. Obviously!
