124 bogus doctors arrested

The South African Medical Association says it's concerned over the prevalence of illegal doctors in the country. Health Minister Joe Phaahla has confirmed that they have arrested 124 fake doctors. The Health Professions Council of South Africa established an office to clamp down on these bogus doctors. The minister has indicated that these unregistered practitioners are common in the private sector. We get some reaction now from SAMA chairperson, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa. #dstv403

I think your view of teachers is rather undermining. We have been in schools for most of our live and those Mothers and father's have protected us from dangers known to us and unknown, so yes a teacher is very much capable of coming up with strategies that can help protect the nation.

As a South African who Trained abroad who have been awaiting to write the board exam for local medical license for over a year now. It’s really frustrating to be kept in suspense for such a long time. No communication at all from the medical council. Look for the iRegister? That's for the priviledged, for a poor or old person That's impossible, period especially if the doctor has been practising in your town for years, how to know if he has later turned to be a fake is IMPOSSIBLE

I was frustrated by the failure of the interviewer to pick up on the nuance of what the interviewee said. Some of those practising are truly 'bogus', as in they do not have medical training. Others have failed to pay dues to HPCSA, or trained overseas and haven't registered. Of course all doctors should register (though any regulatory body on which the public relies should surely not be funded through member contributions), but unregistered doctors are far less risky than people pretending to be doctors. We have a lot of very qualified doctors in South Africa from other countries, many of them married to South Africans and with South African children, who are not working because the HPCSA processes are so slow. Let's stop handing the HPCSA this publicity, and start asking why in a country without enough doctors we have an HSPCA so incapable of registering the people who are qualified and want to work.
