This is part 3 of a 3-part series where I am comparing the Top of the Line Lie Nielsen Vs. the big box store Jorgensen Hand Planes. This video is comparing the No 101's. Part 1 reviewed the no 4's and Part 3 reviewed the 60 1/2's.

I bought one of the 102's based on this video and am very pleased with it. I got lucky and don't have to shim my blade like you so it works great. Thanks for the review. I would buy the block plane and smoother if I had the slightest need for them. I have a Veritas Pocket Plane and it's a great tool, but I like the 102 at least as well. Thanks

Great videos! They are super helpful and great comparison. For this plane and the block plane how do you know you needed to shim? What was wrong with the plane beforehand that made you recognize something was off? Thanks!
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
Great question! I could tell it needed shimmed because it kept cutting heavy on 1 side. For the 101, you can't adjust the lateral so shim was the only option. For the 60.5 you could adjust lateral slightly but even when I did it was still heavy on the same side. Basically if the iron is square and all other adjustments fail, shim it and see what happends.
@egglyph
@egglyph Жыл бұрын
@@BatCaveCreations actually you can adjust laterally on 101, just need a small hammer, there's enough play in parts to allow it. Also, perhaps on that Jorgensen it's better to grind the iron out of square rather than shimming or trying to true up a frog.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
@@egglyph 6:46 my Jorgensen did not have enought play for lateral adjustment. I do have a plane adjust hammer you can see it in the video.... lol I would prefer to shim than to try to find the perfect angle to grind it outta square. I will try filing the bed down so in the future I don't have to shim

I’m still a little confused as to why you had to shim this plane and the block plane. Are they machined out of parallel with the sole? Meaning is the bed not parallel with the sole? If you would please elaborate on the problems you found. Thank you for making this series of videos.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
No problem at all! Yes the blade bed isn't parallel and in-line as it should be. If I keep filing I am certain I can get them where they belong but... don't know that I care to since the paper worked lol For the 60.5 the very back bed (where the depth adjuster is) was higher/not in line with the bed closer to the mouth. With the 101, it was just not flat or parallel. I hope this helps! I am working on an overall review thay talks about the shimming a bit more too. Should be uploaded tonight!

You've had to shim 2 of 3 planes, which does not bode well for the Jorgensens. It's a nice price point, but sometimes it might make sense to follow "buy once, cry once".
@BatCaveCreations

Some people can't afford to buy LN, Veritas, Bedrock, etc. This would be a good alternative for them.

IF you were doing a LOT of work with a tiny plane, that might make some sense, and I'm a big fan of buy once cry once, but faced with an automotive task I need to do very rarely, I always go to Harbor Freight and let the Snap On truck roll on by, same thought here. The cost difference is jaw dropping. 🙂

I got my first 101 when I was 5 years old from my grandfather. I use it all the time. Up until now, I've never seen an adjustable 101. I'm not sure why Jorgensen calls this a 102. A 102, while it has the same lever cap as this one, the blade is still not adjustable (unless you use a hammer) and it's also about 2" longer. How far out of wack is the bed that you need to shim the blade? Would a diamond paddle or an Arkansas slip stone be enough to bring it back to true? I wouldn't mind getting an adjustable 101 if I didn't have to fettle it a bunch. Right now, I carry 2 in my apron, both set for a different depth of cut.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
A diamond paddle or a file would be able to bring it back to true. That is a project I have set for a later time. Just have to keep filing till it's true. I posted a video reviewing the 60 1/2s in that video you see me file the bed of the 60 1/2

Why were paper shims needed for the Jorgensen! Was the cap too loose without them?

The blade bed wasn't parallel to the sole of the plane :( it dipped to the one side making it always cut heavy on that side

I’m wondering if the parts are interchangeable with LN ones.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine so they are basically identical. The only part I'm not sure about is the depth adjustment screw. Thread pitch may not match. I sent the LN back to its owner already so I can't check 😞

If you are going to use this tool for the rest of your life, putting and fitting paper shims every time you sharpen it just to save $100 is not worth doing. Plus the quality of the steel matters a lot too.

Imma file the bed down or use tape and that will fix it. Others aren't having this issue, I just got a bad one haha The iron is O1 so it's pretty good depending on where you wall in the O1 vs A2 argument lol

@@BatCaveCreations I was at Lowe’s a few weeks ago and bought one. I hadn’t yet seen this vid. I was pleased. You definitely get better materials and fit/finish on everything Lie Nielsen makes. A 101/102 doesn’t get much use so for the money, eh? This plane hangs out in my apron and pops out for a chamfer or two. Really no a bad little plane. Nice vid. Thanks much
