Pony Jorgensen affordable block plane first impressions

These Pony Jorgensen planes were sent to me with no expectation of anything in return, I’m confident they don’t even know about this video yet, but I wanted to share my experience with this block plane.
I really hope they get across to the UK and remain affordable options.

3:10 the Jorgensen also can be used all the way to the hole. If you notice, the Jorgensen depth adjuster screw, screws all the way into the frog. That would allow the entire blade to be used. The Stanley would require that you move to another slot.

Good review overall! I ordered my three and a half and 6 1/2 through Amazon I was stoked took them out of the box adjust the blade I making chips for two 2 weeks and they're still Sharp. For the money money you can't pass these up. Liked your comment about the amount of excessive work on the Stanley I agree 100%

Appreciate the thorough video! I picked up one of these for $35 and I am totally shocked. I own Lie-Nielsen and Veritas block planes and this compares favorably! I was a bit surprised that you didn't talk more about the huge bed surface area compared to the old Stanley. That is both very expensive to manufacture and gives incredible stability and eliminates chatter (along with the premium thick O1 steel blade). The movable toe of mine is a little higher than the rest of the sole (the opposite of yours) but for the price it is more than acceptable. I look forward to your videos of the other Jorgensen planes and I plan to go back to Lowes and buy them this week even though more planes are the very last thing I need in my shop!! Thanks again!!

The orange is a bit offensive to me. Not terrible but when I look at Veritas planes it gives me great joy. Not going to compare. I’m sure they work well. Just dressed up to go hunting rather than a dance.

Just bought one for kicks. I own a No 65 from Henry Eckert which is sublime and in my opinion far better that Lie Nielsen as it has a bal;l bearing on the adjuster so it doesn't move the blade sideways when adjusting the depth. I notice the Pony has a Lie Nielsen style adjuster and when I adjusted the depth it moved the blade sideways, which is a pain. Don;t have this problem with the Henry 65. The machining and iron bed look well machined. Blade is a little thin compared to the 6mm Henry Eckert. Haven't used it yet but it looks well machined and has the weight of Ductile iron. A fair bit of slop in the adjuster groove in the blade, that's a pity as this would be easy to get right in my opinion. Will give it a go on some soft wood but I am not expecting anything flash but it should be OK for the $38 Auusie dollars cost :)

May not be for everyone, but i really like that orange look of these tools! Maybe the blade of the Stanley is thinner because it is a different type of steel, which allows it to be thinner and still perform well?

The main reasons Stanley blades are thinner is because 1: Steel is and was expensive, so using less when you could wasn't a bad idea. 2: Back in the old days people weren't as likely to have multi-stone sharpening setups. So having a thinner blade meant less grinding work to do. The main advantage of a thicker blade is of course less chatter. But the blade on a block plane is generally supported well enough that this is pretty negligible. Can supposedly be of some benefit on standard angle bench planes, however some people suspect the lower chatter in planes with thicker irons has more to do with the overall build quality being better more so than the thicker blade.
