I own a pair of these, and they are the best amps I've ever heard. I'm feeding the amps with a Conrad Johnson Premier ten preamp that's been hot rodded a bit. Then the amps are driving a pair of B&W 801 series 3 speakers. It's more amp than I need, but I run them 99% in the triode mode, and they sound super sweet. I've run a lot of Audio Research amps in the past, and love their products, but the Wotans just have a lot of punch to them that the Audio Research amps don't have. The only down side to the Wotans is if you have to move them, you pretty much need to find two 20yr old wrestlers to lift them. Biasing them once a year is a piece of cake. Oh, and living in Minnesota, I don't mind the extra free heat in the listening room that the Wotans provide!
@manardh73873 жыл бұрын
I have the Ichiban's. You have obviously needed to replace a cathode bypass capacitor on occasion after a tube failure. Not a big deal if you are familiar with the soldering iron. I run mine off 240 volt power input in triode mode since they were designed for triode only. Very enjoyable listening for many years now. That's a lot of tubes.

Paul Klipsch famously stated that, "Power equals distortion" and that was his base approach to making very sensitive speakers. There is another well known engineering saying, "cumulative error". I am afraid that this approach invites that phrase.
@justinhiggins22103 жыл бұрын
That's kind of what I was wondering, the more devices in an output path the higher chance of some of them becoming dissimilar in the arc of the soundwave. As their is no such thing as mirror image output devices? I guess that's why they have a bias adjustment for each valve, or tube as most people call them. I've been doing amateur, hobby amp repair for about 20 years but I wouldn't dare call myself an expert or someone who would give advice as if I knew more than they. But I was intrigued by your comment to the point of reply. Thanks.
@Gez4923 жыл бұрын
Some Klipsch speakers can be fun to listen to but there are others that are pretty poor. I don't believe Klipsch would want a totally flat frequency response speaker as they tend to sound lifeless and dull. So I guess just as distortion is present in Amplifiers, colouration is present in Speakers. The difference with Tube Amp distortion is that second order harmonic and even order harmonic distortion are known to be very pleasant to the human ear where as solid state amp distortion is very much not. I would wager that a blind listening test between a solid state and Tube although unscientific would be heavily in favour of the tubes
@f430ferrari52 жыл бұрын
@@Gez492 but wouldn’t you agree this only pertains to the mids and highs and thus high wattage isn’t necessary in this frequency range. I mean we already have seen the popularity of separate subwoofer systems with satellite type speaker configuration. This in turn would seem to eliminate the need for a high powered tube amplifier. In addition, drawing power to the hungry subwoofers can in effect impact the sound of the mids and highs for tube amps much more so than solid state. Tube amps produce too much heat and draw too much electricity and require too much maintenance over time. It’s not with it for me. I would rather spend my money on cars. I have Class A/B amps. No maintenance at all for over 20 years. Just turn on and play. No hassles.

And they all broke. But all the notes being interactive, each pitch, C,Bb,E,A#...etc was just randomly mixed on faceplates next to these giant transformers on thin metal... Rang like hell, all the pitches interacted with one another. Super crazy dude, when you tune them the harmonics affect all the other pitches just like a piano....

Tube amplifiers have more distortion than solid-state amplifiers, but most of it is second-order, which is quite musical. That's why it's called "harmonic" distortion. Second-harmonic distortion is exactly the same note, an octave above. Ditto for higher-order even harmonics; they are also the same note more octaves above. Even-order harmonic distortion can be so pleasant that back in the 1970s the Aphex Aural Exciter was very popular in recording and broadcast specifically because it was designed to generate and add these harmonic distortions! You can still buy it today. I've gone from huge solid state pre and power to Tube pre and power and will not go back unless something ground breaking happens in solid state
@warpspeed98772 жыл бұрын
Human hearing cannot detect less than 5% harmonic distortion. Typical push pull amps have their maximum wattage rating at half of that.

Whether the tube amp could really deliver that huge power to the speakers is not important! Simply because most good hifi speakers in the market would gives enough sound pressure level for just about 5 to30 watt input power. For hifi music reproduction at most home listening rooms, the most important thing to consider are music reproduction fidelity.

This is so stupid. So much energy wasted, so expensive to replace tubes. You may have one tube per channel and sensitive speakers and have great sound. Tubes were in era of 100dB/1m/1W speakers and are great for that. Even with two tubes you may go woth 20W or more in PP or PSE and with 90dB plus speakers will be just enough.
