I had an absolutely beautiful 3/4 high end cuecraft cue many years ago that a friend snapped over his knee after missing an easy shot in the snooker hall. I had been playing with that cue for a very long time, from the age of around 14 (when I first started) until it was snapped when I was around early twenties. I was utterly devastated as most of you know once you bond with a good cue it's very very hard to replace it. What made it even worse is that my mate didn't play snooker and he had no idea of what he'd really done😳🙃I was extremely lucky in that my next cue was another manufacturer but very close in every way to my old cue and I got used to it very quickly. I have had that cue now close to 20years but it has warped to the right at the last 2 or 3 inches of the end of the cue....right in the sighting area so it is extremely off-putting and has caused carnage on my gameplay. It is now time to buy another new cue and I am finding it much harder to find a cue off the rack that I'm feeling confident with. I bought a new one about a month ago, the specs were very close but it was coated in varnish and the "feel" is not quite right. I tried taking some of the varnish off but still it just does not feel right at all! I am half way through this years league so couldn't have happened at a worse time as we are 2nd in the league. Decided to take the plunge and have a handmade custom cue make just for me to my exact spec of my old cue with some very slight changes and some changes in appearance. I have always plated with 3/4 cues because that's what I could get my hands on and what felt right to me buy I have always really wanted to have a beautiful 1piece cue made for me. I have spoken to the cue maker and I'm going to visit him in the coming weeks to pick my design etc. This cue will take between 6-10weeks to make and be ready so I won't get to use it properly until next season. I have decided to try and straighten my old cue with steam the best I can and finish out the season with the one cue that does feel right to me. I am looking forward to receiving my new 1pievce and having all summer on the off season to gel with the cue and get used to its characteristics. These cues are not too cheap so I'm truly hoping this cue will be a lifetime cue and I won't have the headache of having to find another! I have read that a cue lasts 3-5years of regular use which to me is load of bollox. If you take proper care of your cue with a good quality cue wax or oil then ur cue could last many many years. 20+ yrs imho. A good hard case is imperative and never EVER leave your cue in the car overnight! Even if its in the summer months. Humidity changes are a cues worst enemy....that is what will warp your cue. Water & wood don't mix when it comes to snooker, it will warp. Also never leave your cue leaning up against a wall when not in use! Not even for short periods. Practice good habits, look after your cue and your cue will look after you for many years to come.👍🏼

I got a 1/2 piece cue for ease of transport from Cuecraft after seeing your video on cue manufacturing and I am really happy with it. I had it made to similar specs to a shop bought cue with weights that I was comfortable with. Having my own custom made cue makes it feel more special and I feel I play slightly better than with the shop bought one, seems to give me an mental edge that it's custom made to me. On reflection I should have had it done as a 3/4 piece because of the confined position I sometimes am forced to play at my local pub but it feels weird to get a new one after I've only had this one a little under 2 years.

I personally use a Phoenix Elite cue, another manufacturer from Thailand. In my opinion, they are phenomenal cues for the money. You won’t get a better cue for the money. In my opinion just as good as Maximus if not better.

Nice video, what is the ideal length of 3/4 cue ? Can we alter the length of the cue depend upon the players height and their convenience ? Thanks in advance

rajesh. The average length of any snooker cue is 58 inches, some taller players will require something a little longer, likewise shorter players will possibly prefer something a little shorter. The minimum length of a cue is 3 feet (914 mm) but there is no restriction on the length other than that.

What tips do you have for playing consistently every time you play?

Jackson. Just like everyone one else you are searching for that panacea that will cure everything. In my opinion the best way to achieve this is to establish a pre-shot routine. How you walk into the shot, the amount of feathers and the rhythm you use and anything else that is individual to you. The real answer is to find that routine that suits you, its works for you and you are comfortable with it, then practise it until it becomes second nature and do it on every shot. If you can find something that you know all you have to do is point the cue, do what you always do and invariably the balls do as you ask, why shouldn't you be consistent.

Barry im not sure if you can help me ive not long got into snooker but I've got my own cue its a cue craft. I assume its made from Ash and when I get down for the shot every stroke pulls the hair on my chin. I personally don't want to shave every couple of days. Do you have any ideas what I should do. Or do you recommend I different cue mide of better quality wood? Thanks

James. Ash does have a prominent grain and can pull on whiskers if it is not maintained properly. There are two things you can do, take it to the cue maker and they will use grain filler to make it smooth, or swap for a cue made of Maple which is a much smoother wood.

I played with the same cue for 20 years but it was looking a bit tired so i bought a new one which really looked the business. Unfortunately the new one had a lot more throw and hard as I tried I just couldn't play with it. Only recently I bought yet another and had exactly the same problem. Moral of the story, if u find one that works stick with it or the game becomes very expensive.

I play with a slightly springy cue and love it, I just can't get on with these rock hard poker stiff cues that are turned out today, I don't know if it's because all the wood is kiln dried nowadays or it's something to do with the way they are made but they seem lifeless to me.

Even when it comes to tips there are so many to choose from but I always went for the firmer type, less miscues from under the cushion. I have three cues now unfortunately. One which I play well with, one where I'm average, and another which could bring me to tears. I'm like 3 different players.

The Snookerist lol, I have been through so many cues , even after I got the one I play with I still kept looking for something better. I have never sold any of them and every now and again I will get one out and have a session with it, just to depress myself after about ten minutes playing with it ☹️, I guess we never learn. I have no idea why I don't get rid of them. As for tips, I'm pretty much the same I like a firmer tip, I can't get away with a soft tip.

BigDaddy. Two very good cue makers, so much depends on the budget and of course you the player. Choosing a cue is an individual thing, what suits one player will not necessarily suit another. Sorry I cannot be of more help but may I suggest that wherever you go take an experienced player with you to help you select.

Damien. Flexible cues tend to throw the cue ball off line by bending particularly on power shots as you strike it. Stiffer cues tend to give a more truer strike. However, a cue can be too stiff and not give any feel at all, as in most things what suits one doesn't necessarily suit all.

Andrew. I use one and like it. Some players think that you get a better feel of the shot with a one piece cue but my own view is that you will soon get used to either. I would not use a jointed cue with the joint in the center of the cue, I think that could be a weak spot but a three quarter cue is fine and a good amount of professional players use them.

I've bin searing all the companies for a cue with thinner butt sections without success, I have like Yrself short fingers and it's so difficult to grip a standard 29/30mm butt Im just a club player bci Bulwell a club u know well, I don't work so money is a issue but any suggestions wud be appreciated, cheers barry👍

my friend, if money is the issue then go for a custom made maximus , they wont take any extra charges for the custom work and as you say you are only a club player go for their heritage or if you want something with a really good stroke then go for the maximus honor . wont cost you more than 250quids at max .

Hi Barry, whats your views on the whip / flex of the shaft. I recently recieved a maple cue from wood cues. The shaft is very flexible, seems to play well thou.

Michael. Very good question, I don't like a cue that is as stiff as a poker, equally I don't like one that is very whippy. In my opinion there needs to be flex in the wood to give a better feel but too much can throw the ball off line. A solid piece of wood reduces good timing by reducing the feel a player needs. Having said all that it is down to the player, if he likes it and gets success the old motto applies. " If it is isn't broken, don't fix it"

Great video Barry I remember my first proper cue it was a barrcuda kirkham a really nice piece of wood from the early 90s which I bought from Frank sandell there are many good cue makers out there you could spend £800 or £80 and still love the way the cue feels as it's a personal thing , The only thing I would say is if you want to improve and take it seriously then get a cue you like and stick with it

Having no finish at all on the shaft is a little risky, as the ingress and egress of atmospheric moisture is not abated at all. Like an open window. This can lead to warping or strange reactions when travelling to and from different humidity zones.

What oil do they use? I have a cheap cue with the damn varnish sanded off. Trouble is chalk seems to stick to it. Wondered if applying some kind of oil would help?

An oil finish, look at linseed oil or tung oil for an oil finish. These are applied very sparingly and rubbed down. Must be fully dry before applying next coat. Ask any traditional woodworker. Barry may be assuming some old-school general knowledge of wood finishing. Poly-anything will be akin to natural varnishes, not desirable on the cue.

@@TyroneKing1977 Varnish or Lacquer as many call it feels sticky on the shaft where as oil feels really smooth and allows for better cuing especially in warm days if you dont wear a glove. Thats what I've found anyway haha. As for Oils, usual linseed is a good one to go for. Plenty of cue brands have oils out too but probably paying more for a name tbf.

I personally followed this guide when refinishing my varnished cue and had brilliant results. I'd recommend buying this guy's actual cue oil and following his steps exactly. I coated mine four times and it beautifully smooth now

Hi Barry, little off topic but when I’m delivering my cue I tend to twist my wrist into my chest and that in turn causes my elbow to lose its height and therefore missing shots, any tips for not twisting my wrist?

I had noticed that I did that sometimes, I only did it when playing a certain type of shot (I can't actually remember now, but I think it was connected with using side). Anyway I fixed it by just concentrating for a few weeks, every shot, strait wrist, strait wrist and just being aware of it when I did it so I could internally feel annoyed that I had done it again. I don't do it these days. It used to make me apply a little bit of extra side and threw the shot off.

Sounds as if you are trying to STEER the cue, try cueing along the baulk line just playing an imaginary shot, do this very slowly to start with, almost slow motion so that you can control it, then gradually build up the speed. Also do this with the chest on and off the cue making yourself ask question of your own technique.

I would advise not to spend a fortune on a cue £170 to £300 should get you a good playing cue. The cues Barry mentioned are a good makers , I think a parris starts at about £350 , personally I have had a phoenix unity cue for 6 years and Iam happy with it that cost me £170.

Charles. I have known players who cannot make a fifty break pay a small fortune for a cue in the mistaken believe that it will make them into century break players. Certainly a good cue should help their playing standard but it is rather silly to harbour such beliefs.

Barry, thank you for your experience, but could you share a little bit more. Why do the professional choose ash cues instead of maple? As far as i know maple is denser than ash and playing power shots is easier with solid dense cue..

Daniil. It is true that most professionals use Ash but several do use and prefer Maple Stephen Hendry to name just one. I think there are a few reasons, manufactures have told me that they do have some problems getting hold of good quality Maple mainly I suppose because it comes from Canada and the best is used for pool cues. Maple is a very smooth wood and the cue doesn't seem to have its own characteristics the same as Ash. The different sound made by the two woods is also quite noticeable as the cue strikes the cue ball and this can be off putting if you change from one to the other.

Thanks for all the work you do on your videos Barry, I really enjoy them. I bought a cue a couple of months back and the last time I practiced it was sticking to my hand as it went through. I tried to clean it with a scrunched up piece of paper as recommended in the cue making video but it didn't work. I ended up chalking my hand but I'm not happy with it as a solution, any recommendations? Thanks a mil

The first cue I ever bought had this problem. I solved the issue by lightly sanding the shaft with a scouring pad, to take off the sticky varnish, then giving the cue a standard oiling and cleaning. Worked lovely. Hope this helps!

Clint. It all depends what finish it has on it. John-S has made a good recommendation why not try that in the first instance, if the scouring pad doesn't work try very fine wet and dry paper. Which ever method you use please be careful not to take any wood off and then lightly oil it with a good quality linseed oil giving that a good buffing once it is dry.

Canada. The grain on an Ash cue is quite prominent and produces arrows / chevrons at some point. Most players (not all) tend to have these chevrons uppermost as they play.

Mark. Lots of pros are switching to the firmer tips these days but if you feel its too hard for you then yes you should change it. A new tip rarely gets softer with use, quite the opposite so you should bear that in mind when you make the decision.

billyrm. That really depends on how it is made. Some one piece cues (not all) have a weight inserted and that can be removed and replaced. Three quarter joined cues tend not to have a weight inserted and rely upon the joint and butt weight to create the weight and balance.

Got an ultimate maximus cue myself, very pleased with it :) edit : (don't know if it's appropriate to say this here, sorry if not ) if anyone wants to acquire a high quality cue, I can give you the contact of my coach who regularly deals with top cue makers, he just posted on facebook that 4 snooker cues (+ extentions) are for sale, 2 John Parris, 2 Wooldridge, 1 trevor White. I've played a few shots with each at my local club during my training sessions with him so I can confirm they're all really good cues :)

Hi barry, I have some questions always in my mind. Does a softer cue give more timing than a stiffer cue? Reason is because a softer cue can compress a little bit more to hang on to the cue ball. If this is true, then does it mean softer cue also have less deflection when playing side due to the longer timing? Also, I guess a softer cue will have less accuracy when playing long powerful shot, cause it will bend a little , am I right?

Zin. Sorry for late reply, I have been on holiday. Because of the flex in a cue more spin can often be generated but this is more likely down to the skill of the player. Certainly excessive bend that can happen with a whippy cue will have a tendency to throw the cue ball off line so what you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabout.

Hello coach barry hope you doing well,just wanna ask you about how about omin cue is it good? I found out some cue which is hard one when I play with really power deep screw or top spin the accuracy is really bad but some other cue the reflections is better than my power shot will be easier.

Wong. I have heard good things about Omin cues but there are so many good makers around these days. Every cue is different regardless of who makes it and some will throw more than others, there are lots of factors that determine this. Thickness, weight, ferrule, technique, tip etc. so find one that you are comfortable with and stick to it.

Why do cues have a flat part?

Junior. This stems from the days when the game was played one handed. It was played with a MACE which was a piece of wood with a 'T' piece on the end and the balls where pushed around. Over time the 'T' piece was discarded with, but the flat remained allowing the cue manufacturer to advertise his product by inserting a name plate on it. Today that is really its only purpose.

JAAGO. Choosing a tip size is all about personal preference, some players would choose the 9mm, others the 9.7mm. My own personal preference would be the 9.7mm.

Varnish is very annoying..gives you sweaty hand easily. What is your Cue spec??? I think it s more important to find a Cue similar to what you used to iso some physical spec. Same power same amount of deflection... is more important Imo then 9.5mm tip etc.

Mr. All cues irrespective of dimensions will play slightly differently and will take time to get used to. Two cues that are to all intents identical will still play with variables.

dark. Lots of professional players prefer Maple cues to Ash, Stephen Hendry was one during his career. I suppose one reason is that Maple comes from Canada and the best is reserved for pool cues. I am told that good quality Maple is difficult to get over here in England.

I wasn't as concerned with the girth of the butt until I met my current fiancée. She is also a keen snooker and pool player with ample talents. After playing with her's I find prefer a much fuller butt, something I can really get a good grip on. Now when it comes to my cues however...

Barry I want a cue like a snooker cue. I want to play American 8 ball. I don’t like the butts of the Americans cues. So I wanted a snooker cue butt type. None of the cues have a 12.5 mill tip do I can use a snooker cue.

Charzar. It is rare to get a snooker cue with a tip larger than 10mm. Hitting the larger and heavier pool balls really does demand a more robust cue, hence the tip size. Some of the shots played in pool would possibly damage a snooker cue and although I have seen players use one, I would not recommend it.

Hello Barry, I bought the cue maximus ultimate, it weighs 18.4oz. I felt it was heavy. I bought it from stu green baiez. I expected its weight to be suitable for me, but it is somewhat heavy. What do you recommend?

@pales. Tricky one this, Maximus are good cue manufacturers but so much depends on personal preference when it comes to size and weight. My first thoughts are, have you given it enough time to get used to it? Second, if you have, give Stu a ring, they are very obliging. He may be able to suggest options in respect of alterations but I am afraid there will be a cost.
