Good call. Rarely is an edit needed on a video once it is published. But this edit was definitely needed. It shows that you truly have a goal of teaching people correct information. Great job. This definitely makes my opinion of you go up to respecting you in a way I reserve for very few people.

Good demo Rob. What's nice about those circuit boards is that they usually also switch the output off if the voltage drops below a certain point. That point is usually a bit low, but is good enough to stop the cells from being damaged.

Love this, what an excellent way of not only reusing discarded ph batteries, but also to do away with the ‘need’ for single use batteries!. Aren’t charge boards used in electric shavers, ph chargers etc?.

I discovered these lithium battery charging boards about a year ago and one project was to add it to a solar powered PIR security light to charge the battery fully when it receives insufficient sunlight in winter for a full charge, it works a treat. I've recently been scavenging batteries when I get the opportunity in order to repurpose them. A trip to my local phone repair shop is on my to do list and beg for some before they hit the bin. Thanks for a great video, I have some new ideas for projects now.

I have a strip of them charging boards I was gunna use for a mass 18650 charger but I think I prefer this idea, I also got a bucket of lithium batteries from laptops to go with. A voltage regulator at the output could widen the voltage range to play with.

If you have a look at the datasheet for those little boards, you can change a single resistor to set the charging current to anywhere up to an amp, IIRC they come set at 500mA. From memory it's up to a 20k resistor, I have one with a pot on it so I can easily change the charge rate. The chip also supports a thermal cut-out which I've never tried.

Great video on so many levels Rob, thanks. When paired with the cheap charging circuits you show it gives years of life to old phone cells, and say goodbye to disposable batteries. One problem I've come across is small led torches (flashlights) relying on the small current available from disposable AAA cells don't like the high current from the li-ion cells. As in killed instantly! Led's are largely voltage tolerant but current specific. The opposite of filament globes!

Hi Robert, you just managed to demonstrate the work i have been investigating on how to power an LED for your competition. I ordered 18650 Li-ion batteries which haven't arrived yet but should before the competition closing date. there are obviously some slight changes with electronic features and current supply to the board. would have loved to use LiFePO4 cells but they were twice the price, would make the electronic design, because of the similar nominal voltage to that of an LED, a lot more simple and safe with more than 10 times charge discharge cycles than Li-ion, a lot safer and cleaner technology. Also the LiFePO4 batteries would have arrived after the close of the competition. Never mind. Will still make a video of my set up. Mick

In the video you mention testing the battery voltage. There was a range where the battery is fine, a range where the battery can be reconditioned and a range where the battery is garbage. Is there a formula for calculating these voltages?

Awesome conversion! One thing I have to ask about is those ~£15 transformers/inverters inside the units that recharge nickel cadmium cells, I wondered how someone could make plug-in stuff more portable, without needing a ridiculously oversized inverter that costing >£100, (i.e reversing the flow of current from the batteries into a female to female three pin plug… Maybe the available current draw would be far too low however.)

At 04:53 One must observe the difference between series and parallel lithium battery connections, Because you seem to have edited (chopped) that little nugget out of the original upload. Balancing chargers are always a crucial addition, if you're wiring two or more lithium cells in series.

a lot of those lights on a string that are LED these days have a box that takes like 3 AAA batteries ie perfect for liPo cells actually since they work down I think to like 3 or 2.5 volt)

oh also as most things that use standard batteries, also are designed to allow using rechargable like cadmium sulfide, metal hydroxide ect, which means the voltage is 3 x 1.2v not 3 x 1.5 only, so 3.6 is perfect for those, it seems.

What happens if the batteries don't have the same capacitance?
@j.f.christ8421
@j.f.christ8421 2 жыл бұрын
You'll get current flowing from the "bigger" one to the smaller one. This isn't a good thing as you're wasting power and may cause overheating, so you try to use matching ones. Also even if you do have 2 matching ones, make sure the have the same amount of charge when you solder them together. It's a bit safer if you discharge them first.
@john_blues

@@j.f.christ8421 Thank you!
@j.f.christ8421
@j.f.christ8421 2 жыл бұрын
@@john_blues I should add my answer was for parallel. Basically if they're at different voltages then the 'bigger' one will charge the 'smaller' one until the voltages equal each other. When discharging & charging they'll do that as well, which may overstress the smaller one. In serial is a bit different, but the voltage on the 'smaller' will drop faster (probably dropping below the safe voltage) while the bigger one is still forcing current thru it. This is why dead battery packs (even back to the old NiCAD & NiMh ones) will have one dead cell, that's the weakest one failing first and killing the pack. This is why LiPo packs have the balancing & protection circuits. Finding matching cells is why those battery capacity testers are quite popular these days.
