Congrats on the water source. Good neighbors are such a blessing. I have met all 3 of my future neighbors around my land and they are all very friendly. I used to work with one of them and he has lent me numerous tools and helped more than I ever imagined. I am so thankful for friendly neighbors!

My family homesteaded a property 35 years ago. Lots of trials and tribulations along the way, I certainly understand your approach. One thing that stands out years later is all the money, time and lost production used to "save" money, later on REALLY didn't. It cost more! Put your feelers out for a drilling company who needs some plumbing work? Trade some services, etc. I still think you can get a well AND finish building this year Best of luck! Love your videos

Have you considered rainwater catchment with enough storage to span the dry periods? A structure to hold solar panels may double nicely as a catchment surface. Keep up the good work!

If you have access to the springs get directly from them to remove the contamination chance. A holding tank for a pump can still be put in where you wanted but removes the pulling in open water risk. The overflow would be the biggest issue with freezing. Developing 2 springs at the same time is just a little more work then one and gives you one and the owners one even if you just leave the second spring draining back to the creek it is ready for what they want to do with it. A direct drive solar pump should have no problem with that short distance and elevation letting you refill the tanks any time the sun is out and the overflow can ether go right to the creek or to a holding pond for later use.

Im excited for you. We just spent $8800 for a 6" well 500' with a 1.5hp pump and a 44 gallon tank. But glad we have water now. We have several creeks on our property so we will likely tap intonthat in the future. But i am truly fortunate because everything I do I split 50/50 with my parents.

Your room idea is my plan also. With a couple of differences. Instead of buying tanks like you are considering, I want to buy the 250/275 gallon used food grade IBC totes. The aluminium framed 'bags' with a 2/2.5" valve on the bottom to plumb. stack those things up for water catchment. They can be had for 20-50 bucks a pop. A much much cheaper alternative. And leaves a lot of options open later on down the road if you want to use a couple for untreated water that would be used for gardening. Connect a couple/few for passive solar for heating floor, etc. If you see an issue with this, please let me know. So I can figure things out.

Clever thinking. When the water is in the tank on side of hill in the room built with tires, wouldn't gravity feed your house and shop? I guess a pump would give you more pressure but if fire fighting is your concern a portable pump on back of your pick up would be more effective. Water pipe from spring needs to be buried deep enough to keep from freezing. Good luck. Vinny 🇺🇸.

You are on the right track. Use a submersible well pump and lay it horizontal in your container in the creek. I have a neighbour with a dug shallow well and his pump lays that way inside a 4" ABS pipe. He then pumps the water into a cistern in his basement where another submersible well pump supplies the house.

Oh Mein I wish I had seen this earlier. I would have suggested that you installed a Ram pump in the stream and install your water tank higher up on the hill behind the pad. The ram pump doesn’t use electricity and runs practically forever. You would then gravity feed water from the tank up the hill, down to your house. Perfect set up.

I don't ever recall anyone ever complain about having too much potable water on their off grid homestead. Also, I recommend looking at the WOM from the earth ship community for water treatment as well as they have built cisterns utilizing cans and cement. Just my 2 cents....LOL

Were planning on having 2-- 3000 gallon tanks for our rain catch system. I plan on burying them at least 3 feet down, just past the freeze line. Plus put the containers in a barn to protect them from the Northern wind in the winter. I'm leaving Utah because of the law prohibiting citizens from gathering water, and this is why I am coming to Idaho. Keep it up Mr Poppy, you're on the right road.

something I just thought of, we have a 2500 gallon norwesco tank . the only thing i would have done differently is 2" rigid foam around the sides and top, first some sand , then foam. winter to summer temps will change the temp slightly, which changes an on-demand water heaters ability a little. and fill the new tank before it rains on it, it will float up, or try to.

Could you bury a long pipe parallel to the creek with holes and filler cloth that would in turn drain into a small tank on your property. A lift pump would send water to an even larger tank near your home. If you drill holes in a tank you would be limited to a very small area from which to collect from but a pipe would offer far more surface area. Besides do you really want to drill holes in a new expensive plastic tank?
@ArkansasHomesteader
@ArkansasHomesteader 7 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you have a solution. without having to hire a well drilled for now. If I understood the setup you want to filter the water into the side of the tank. I wanted to suggest another way if you hadn't considered it. Burry the tank like you planned, but just up from the tank dig out a long trench and fill that with gravel and a 4 inch field line running into the bottom of your tank. That's basically just a septic tank in reverse and those have a long track record of success and cheap readily available parts. Just a thought.... best of luck however you do it. Can't wait to see it working for ya.

Looked over below post to make sure wasn't repeating someone else. Being a plumber as well for more years than would like to have been, please don't go any smaller than a 1" poly line from spring to your storage tank. Most pump manufactures size their pumps for 1-1/4". Submersible pump if have electricity. Ram pump if have concerns with power. Any sizing questions I would be gad to help...best to you on your project.

I have been thinking that the solution was to use one of the springs on Terrell and Mindy`s land, but have you thought about shooting an elevation 80-85 ft. above your house, across to their land, and see if there is a spring that high, if there is, you could build a spring box there, and connect it to a tank above your house with 2" PE irrigation pipe WITHOUT any pumps, not buying any pumps, will free up money to buy a LOT of PE pipe, and the system would be very simple, and require no power! Like others I think you should just bury your tank directly into the ground, and not spend time money, and effort to build a cavern for it, a notarized letter of permission to use the spring, would not be a bad idea! Keep up the amazing work.

Make yourself a three-quarter inch ram pump, put one end of the line facing upstream with a screen over the end to keep debris out of the pipe. Run your line do you where you want to have a holding tank, the ramp up will fill up a 500 gallon tank within 48 hours. something you might not be familiar with cement treated soil.. you are thinking dirt filled tires for you water tank room... from what i see... soil filled tires is inexpensive but very labor intensive.. since you own the backhoe... you could, depending on how vertical your dirt will stand.. diging 3 foot wide (the walls) trenchs. mixing in maybe 4 sacks per yard for cement... it's not hard with a loader... then packing it with little moisture. with a wheel in your how.... back in the trenchs... my rough calculations figuring $10 a sack.. the cement would cost just under $3000... i understand that's a bit of money... but within maybe within 7 days total you can have your walls and room dug... of course between the time you finish the walls you need to allow about 2 weeks for them to cure... before pulling the dirt out of the room it's just a thought... most people haven't been around cement treated soil... I've worked it i few times on military bases.. for any of you that are saying????????? get couple of bags of cement and play with it.. (formula app.. 4 sacks per cubic yard of finished product) when installed right it's like concrete.. i plan on using it for my barn floor.. (don't stop until you have the finish you want, tomorrow is to late) (again I'm very familiar with it.. the first time we screwed up...tried to finish it the next day. even a cat 12g blade couldn't fine tune it..) just my 2 cents worth...

He has uploaded severely videos on how to make a ram pump with material from the home depot store and shows how he has installed it as well, by making a small dam across a stream to create pressure build up. The pump pumps water a horizontal distance of over 150-200 meters and an elevation of 80+ meters into a storage tank. to create lots of pressure at the faucet/outlets. Also, check out his emergency fire fighting set up too.

Red Poppy Ranch and what if on the downward slope you had 60 ft. of 4 or 6 inch pipe? Creating a pressure bladder in the middle. Causing pressure downward to a reduced 1 inch pipe at the same time creating suction from a reduced 1 inch pipe to the stream with a screened foot valve? You'll need a valve at the bottom of the hill and a tee at the highest point in the line with a short line straight up with a valve. Turn the bottom valve off. Open the top valve and fill the system there with a pump in the stream to prime the system. When water and all the air is out. Close the valve and open the valve at the bottom of the hill. A natural syphon will occur. Don't forget to blurry 42 inches to keep from freezing in the winter.

Water law varies from state to state. Is what you are planning legal? Check with a lawyer and make sure you have all the I's dotted and the T's crossed. Nothing is forever. Your new neighbors may put in a septic system, a cattle pen or a chicken house. Think real hard about it before you put in a lot of money and hard work. Down stream users may have a legal right to that stream water. Personally, I think it would be better to bite the bullet and put in your own well. Just my opinion.
