In a small way the U.S. did actually score a measure of revenge for the Pearl Harbor attacks back on December 22nd, though it wasn't known at the time. Captain Herbert C. Freuler and Lieutenant Carl R. Davidson had taken off from Wake Island in what was then last two remaining F4F Wildcats, recently patched up from previous air battles, intercepting a force of 33 B5N Kate bombers and 6 Zero fighters headed to bomb Wake as part of the Japanese invasion. Davidson was shot down and killed in the resulting dogfight but Freuler had managed to down two Japanese planes before his own plane had taken so much damage that he was forced to crash land on the beach. It was to be the last air battle for the pilots defending Wake Island, as they were now without any planes, and the remaining pilots reported for duty to fight as "infantrymen." Unbeknownst to Freuler one of the two planes he had shot down carried Noburu Kanai, the bombardier credited with striking the fatal blow to the USS Arizona on December 7th. Kanai was killed in action when his plane was shot down by Freuler.

That's basically the Red Army as a whole from 1939-42. My heart sank at 1.25 regarding the sheer waste that these guys had a life which was cut short at someone elses whim . I know, the German Holocaust was much more massive scale and I do feel angry about the needless loss of life involved in that situation but i think this hit me as I am an Aussie and we actually hear little of the Jap atrocities over here . '809 Australians surrender, 426 of them are bayonetted to death'. I feel humbled at the sacrifice of these men, actually everyone who was in effect murdered needlessly. in both wars. Best channel on YT, thanks for educating us..

My great uncle, Rev. Raymond Archer, was the Methodist Bishop of Singapore from about 1929 until the late 1950s. He and his wife were evacuated before the surrender, and then returned following the war.

@@MikeJones-qn1gz Indeed. I'm glad they talked about the Kriegsmarine changing their Enigma machines as most history documentaries gloss over the fact that the Atlantic war swung back and forth for a long while before settling in the Allies favour. The Avro Lancaster will be coming on stream very soon as well. I wonder if the bombing raids will be revisited.

Indy, since it is now 1942, are you going to do a special episode about the Dieppe Raid on August 19? If so, may I suggest you find a copy of David O'Keefe's "Dieppe Uncovered"? There was a great deal more secret stuff going on there than has previously been dreamed of. Enter Ian Fleming and the British special forces! And thousands of Canadians were fed like sheep to the wolf on the beaches.

Hello Indy! As a history nerd, I love this channel and the great war. But i would like to highlight a few events from 1940 to 1942. 1). The battle of Dakar (the failed anglo-Free French invasion of Senegal) was the first free French actions during the war along the battle of Gabon. 2.) The Bombing of Bangkok. When Thailand joined the war on Japan's side, the us rejected the thai declaration of war but did help undermine marshal phibun's regime with the Free thai movement as the British and the US did raid thailand. And finally 3). The channel dash raids in the english channel begin today. Love the channel and congrats on the engagement Indy!
@WorldWarTwo3 жыл бұрын
I don't understand- are you pointing them out because you think we're not covering them? Because the channel dash and the Dakar battles were very much covered- the dash especially on our day by day instagram coverage. The Thailand bombing hasn't been specifically covered, though when I get the time to do a block about Thailand again it will be retroactively covered instead of just getting a single sentence here or there. You're the only person that's mentioned the Thailand bombing to me, interestingly enough. You'd think there'd be more. Glad you like the show- we need more history nerds.

At 11:40 what is “calvary” referring to? No way there’s a unit the size of an army corps fighting from horseback at this point in time? Also unsure of “shock army”. Would love a special on division-sized units and up for each nation!
@reginabillotti2 жыл бұрын
Cavalry is an official designation for a unit. It may or may not involve actual fighting on horseback, although there were some units (in different militaries) that fought on horseback, and many more that used horses for transportation.

This finding runs contrary to the previous research that showed it was possible to have a February revolution in March and an October revolution in November. Also, there are spoilers in the book title on the left behind the typewriter. Don’t read too carefully!
