I love hearing things that add perspective to what is being taught: like you mentioning your mother’s birthday. I’m 33 and have always put history into perspective based on my parents/grandparents/etc’s ages. Always thinking to myself “grandpa would’ve just barely been able to remember post WWII America. (He would’ve been 5 by the end of the war) Or my great grandfather was old enough to remember the middle and end of The Great War, having been born in 1910. I do this to remember that history, no matter how long ago it happened, isn’t actually all that far off from now.

The Germans knew about the destruction of Jews, just like the whole of humanity knows about the destruction of the planet. The issues we face appear to be at the humanity level.

Its also worth noting that, though he was a conservative nationalist, and had some more than a bit dodgy views on race, and jewish and other people (like the Poles for example), von Stauffenberg was not, nor was he ever, as some posters on here have stated, a Nazi. As in, he never actually joined the NSDAP. Obviously that doesnt automatically make the man a paragon of virtue, but its worth pointing out.

You are quite likely correct - however, I would like to add to this. He wasn’t *just* politically and militarily motivated (although that likely had a lot to do with it); he was also motivated by his conscience. Allow me to quote - “It’s time now for something to be done. He who has the courage to act must know that he will probably go down in German history as a traitor. But if he fails to act, he will be a traitor before his own conscience.”
@jdotoz

Yes, but what was his conscience troubling him about? The need to save Germany from strategic blunders, or to stop Germany from doing more evil?

@ since he was a devout catholic, I would say the evil he saw and was told about. I mean he heard some of Hitler’s bunk with his own ears, and some of it was told to him by his comrades and co- conspirators.

@@jdotozMany of his coconspirators would have agreed to both. To quote another German General who was among the conspiracy: "If God once promised Abraham that he would not destroy Sodom if there were only ten righteous people in it, then I hope that God will not destroy Germany for our sake. None of us can complain about his death. Anyone who has entered our circle has put on the shirt of Nessus. The moral worth of a person only begins when he is prepared to give his life for his convictions." Additionally many figures of the Social Democratic party and other former parties were also among the plot.

The problem is that we are not looking at the plotters, particularly Stauffenberg, as human beings like any other with flaws, or that people can have questionable views or agree with or even do bad things, and that that makes them incapable of doing good. Good isn't always nice. The 20th July Plotters weren't, after all, a monolith, and there was a variety of people with different aims and motivations, the only thing they all agreed on was that Hitler had to go. At the end of the day, regardless of Stauffenburg's motives, he still *tried to kill Hitler*. And this also doesn't factor in the fact that people like von Tresckow, Goederler and Ludwig Beck, particularly the former, were genuinely opposed to Hitler and the Nazis for reasons of conscience.
@pilum3705
@pilum3705 Сағат бұрын
Yeah, I am honestly always a bit disgusted when people try to play down Stauffenberg and others because their motivations didn't quite fit the picture they want. These men were still incredibly brave and risked and lost their lives doing something almost no one was willing to do.

Like a lot of nationalists, I'm sure he would've been fine or even preferred a government in the style of imperial gemany. But because hitler shared similar ideals and had a similar system of government, they were willing to participate in it to get back in power and keep other political groups in germany, which were gaining support, out of power. Even if we ignore him and many like him becoming nazis and holding the highest postitions of nazi germany when it comitted its worst deeds, they're still opponents of democracy and proponents of military expansionism, i.e. invading other countries and annexing them.

@WorldWarTwo The Stauffenberg conspirators DID want to dissolve the concentration camps and sack/imprison the entire SS leadership. So, saying that he was not interested in ending the holocaust is, at best, a distortion.
@WorldWarTwo
@WorldWarTwo Сағат бұрын
Some of the other conspirators sure, but Stauffenberg himself never mentioned anything of the like. His other statements do not do much to exonerate him either. A fact is, Stauffenberg was not among the loudest voices against the war against humanity unleashed by the Nazi regime, not even among the quieter ones. Beck and Goerderler, the prospective President and Chancellor of Germany, agreed that Stauffenberg was to be pushed to the sidelines as soon as the new government was instated because of his vision for the future Germany. The 20th July conspirators are often unrightfully deified and painted as morally pure and without fault. In reality, they are complex characters and they are not without fault.

So annoying when numbers are given, then compared with other numbers … without the most important aspect from which true understanding is achieved: proportion. 50k out of ??? 100k out of ??? It would also increase understanding if timeframe (rate) was included: e.g. 50k deserters out of 2M over 5 years -vs- 100k deserters out of 3M over 8 years.

I was told that people are no longer interested in history. Your channel proves them wrong. I wanted to tell you, my papa went to get himself some hitler. Anti-Fascists disrupting a large gathering of white supremacists in Europe, Antifa class of 1945. Well, he went to the water hell abyss in the Pacific theater. When he was mere 14 year old he was doing mocking drawings of hitler. He was a exceptionally gifted illustrator from a few year of age onward to his death. He documented and illustrated about 800 images of the war in the Pacific theater, in real time between picking up all his dead comrades bodies and body parts. I am now looking for a literary agent. He will be one of the last artists to be discovered who documented the war. I want to begin the book with his early drawings of hitler and how he lied about his age to go destroy fascism. These days Americans seem to love all things nazi, as we voted for a man who loves hitler and quoted him all the time and even his own generals came forward, and it's his nightie night reading by his bed. How soothing to merge a little with hitler speeches before one drops off into slumberland. But no mind, we forgot why we were in Europe. I understand if you add up everyone who died, hilter killed one billion. I think we want more of that, as if we could not learn the lessons of why we fought the fascists. Back by popular demand because we have a hard time learning and want more horrors.

@@michaelmckenna6464 It would be trivial to find someone to do a more competent job of running Germany than Hitler did. If the new Führer chose to continue the war, that would make the cost of winning the war higher. However, it would also be trivial to find someone saner to hold that position, and any sane person would realize that the war was already lost, and would concentrate on surrendering on the best possible terms (which would probably be unconditional surrender, the Allies being in no mood to accept a conditional surrender). I believe that most of the people who tried to kill Hitler had the intention of replacing him with someone who'd have been likely to do so.

@@Significantpower Yep. In the last months of the war the Germans captured some of the British Eclipse documents showing the future map of a divided Germany. The Nazi High Command kept its discovery secret to only the very high ranking members, so there were still some generals and officers into April 45 thinking they could just hold out against the Red Army and negotiate a conditional truce with the western allies. Stauffenberg and the plotters clearly weren't aware that the allies meant every word of "unconditional".
