In this special episode, we're talking with Karl Winkler, Vice President of Sales and Service @ Lectrosonics. We talk about the L-Series wireless kit I've had to demo, about the inner workings of the Lectrosonics mothership facility & what aspiring engineers can be studying to contribute to the wireless technology conversation in the future.
This is a long one, and as we explore this format more in the future we may find it better to split these long episodes up in to shorter parts. Let us know your preference so we can learn what works best.
1:55 - What about the Digital Hybrid makes it so different?
6:19 - How big is the engineering team @ Lectrosonics?
7:09 - What can students focus on now to be employable in the future?
12:52 - On compatibility mode, does it help or hurt sales to support old gear?
14:28 - This stuff is kinda pricey, but cheap gear keeps breaking. What do to?
16:37 - Is there a correlation between the music of your artist endorsers and the performance of your systems?
18:51 - Can you tell us about your time with the Airmen of Note?
22:11 - What's up with that HUGE body pack behind you?
24:30 - DCHT First Look
26:49 - On Product Lifecycles, what is that like at Lectrosonics?
28:59 - Core priorities when designing new products?
Thanks to Karl and the team at Lectrosonics for sharing their work with us. It's always incredible to get to know folks who truly show up and put their best work out every single day. Thanks to everyone who works at the company, in every department, for sharing your work. It's really impressive stuff.

As a KZbinr and a lifetime pro audio guy I want nothing more than to use Lectrosonics L series, and I'm not opposed to spending $3,000 for the game over wireless I've always wanted. Obviously nobody can deal with the latency in AVX and the older Sennheiser Evo is straight out of date. The biggest issue here is having been through the FCC stealing our frequencies multiple times I have no idea if I'll be able to use any of the 3 blocks offered in the L series a year later. At least with straight (read: junk) 2.4G systems I'm not scared I'm lighting my money on fire. Karl, any input?

We are all certainly concerned about spectrum loss. For the next few years (5? 7?) we have a pretty good idea of what the UHF TV frequencies will look like. And, while certainly crowded, there is room for wireless microphones in these bands. This is why the L series tunes across 75 MHz (unlike the older stuff that covered only 25 MHz). If you are US based, we recommend A1 for primary use, and, if you have to set up a lot of channels, a combination of A1 and B1. For ENG operators, the newly expanded 941 band is very attractive, but you do need a Part 74 license to operate there. 2.4 GHz has been used for wireless microphones for a long time, and we've seen a lot of innovation there, but our opinion is that for professional users, it is to be avoided due to the heavy and unpredictable crowding (WiFi, etc.).

@@lectrosonics Thank you guys, this answers questions I didn't even ask like what block to choose! I'm never using more than 2/3 channels so A1 should be plenty. I have some 2.4G systems and wish I'd never bought them. 🍻

We had a few of Lectrosonic InEar systems for a while to try out. We decided not to buy them because of a few big issues. Low notes had a sizzling noise with it Lectrosonic was aware of it but couldnt fix it. It simply didnt work for the mucicians on stage. And the battery was really bad, we only got about 1,5h at the most with a few different brands of batteries.
