I think their 1-10 rating system is meant to represent how many seconds they take to rake.
@krissisk41636 жыл бұрын
Really all they rate is the body. You've gotta admit that if you take that body and give it a good core then it would be a good lock. Nothing short of a grinder is going to beat it destructively. It's just too bad that Master apparently doesn't consider picking enough of a threat to protect against.

Very interesting. I’ve never seen an M930 with all standard pins. The few I’ve picked have 4 spools. BUT, I have run into a regular 930 with all standards... and it’s supposed to have 4 spools. Looks like a case of terrible QC, because I’m pretty sure that’s not spec. Even with the spools though, this is a 30 second Lock. It’s a shame because it’s not bad otherwise.
@mattlogue13004 жыл бұрын
Why don't they always put in spools, etc?
@katiedonovanAlt4 жыл бұрын
They've discretely changed them. In the now 930X, the screw holding in the plug is a TORX. Because, you know, it was too easy to get to the core and see their crap using a screwdriver just about everyone has. I think that's where the "X" comes from. Also, FYI; the "KA" you see in some Master model names means, "Keyed Alike." If you check the shelf at your local big-chain hardware store, you'll find a lot of these locks are keyed alike to others nearby. This makes it easier for people who need to buy a dozen of these at once to get them keyed alike; but of course it kida screws the folks dumb enough to buy one for their home from the store in the neighborhood because all of their neighbors who bought that lock probably have a key to their lock as well as their neighbors'. Master likes to screw everyone they can who is NOT a business. I think the reason they put their best cores into their LOTO locks and crappy ones into their "10's" is so their corporate clients can tell their insurance companies that since they host Master's best cores, the LOTO locks are as safe as they can be, so when it comes to a court case over a wrongful death because someone else removed another worker's LOTO, (These are often supposedly "One Lock, One Key" to ensure no one else CAN remove the LOTO without destroying it)the insurance company gets to say the LOTO was not picked opened and MUST have either been removed with the key, or by a person intent on murder. Either way, not Master's fault, not the insurance company's fault, and not the employer's fault. Wanna know why something stupid is happening? Follow the money. Always....you know that; you're a lawyer!

Hi Bosnianbill. So at my job we were in the works of purchasing our locksmiths company before we had financial issues and I already did a lot of learning by replacing and rekeying locks but never really learned how to pick but when it was in the talks of buying him out I got a pick set n would always rake with a decent amount of success and since that deal fell through and the opportunity came up where our old locksmith needed someone to handle business while he’s on his trips I decided that this was something I really want to learn and have been watching you and the lockpickinglawyers videos for the past 2 months and I got a cheap amazon and wish set (Amazon was $12 wish was $8) and when I got the sets they were relatively the same the one from wish was kinda rough but after fair use they are same in terms of feel. We use a lot of master locks at work and we have a bunch that we don’t have they keys for (if you saw our key trays which are literally hundreds and with no labels you wouldn’t want to try every key and me just trying to pick them which some were rated 7-9 on master locks ratings I was able to pick (actually picking by feel because I really want to learn the craft) I was able to pick over 40 locks within a week. (Which I now use as my practice locks) we also have some American locks which I have on my keychain which I would love to send a picture of I have 87 keys on my key rings which I use for work and if my set doesn’t open it then I know no one at work has the key and I would have to resort to looking in the bins. My question is what recommendations do you have to be a good learners but also challenging lock where I can learn how to feel security pins and how to handle them?

After watching Bosnianbill and LockPickingLawyer's videos on picking Master Lock LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) padlocks and how good the 6 pinned core is, and then watching Wayne Winton's video on how extremely difficult it was to cut the 930 (He had to use a bolt cutter with a ratchet strap), I find that destroying a LOTO and installing the core in the 930 is still cheap enough to be one of the least expensive and tough locks for the money. The $23.00 930 is a really really tough lock to cut. Just swap the core out from a $9.00 LOTO.

If you simply replaced some of the standard pins with security pins of the same size. How much better could the core be with the same key?
@randy49036 жыл бұрын
Tex Patriot it would be tougher to pick, but the way the pin chambers in the plug are countersunk means that you have a much greater margin of error when manipulating the pins. The locks are made that way to allow for sloppier tolerances with pins and keys, but this also makes them easy to pick.

The newer production ones now come with all spool driver pins. However they are not much better as I can still pick them rather quickly and i am a very inexperienced picker, also some of them still rake open easily even with the new security pins. Not to mention they still have that large nut that can be unscrewed with pliers once the rubber piece is removed. You can always count on master to make sure there is at least one or two ways to quickly defeat their locks with little to no skill so that if you lose your key or are a criminal you will never be locked out lmao.

Concerning aspect that could escape many is the part number... the "KA" means Keyed Alike, the "LH" is just the shackle length, and the "D" is Display packed. When I sell padlocks, each client gets a true KD number we randomize when rekeying EVERY American and Master PRoSeries lock we sell. You mention lack of spools and serrations and a 6th pin.... the 6230 has all that, and a MUCH better tolerance keyway. Hi, after watching this video, I bought the lock on Ama*** in Europe. Here it's called "Excel" (instead of Magnum). M930EURDLH. Looks as great and beefy as it is easy to pick. Sadly, my one has two shallow cuts on 1 and 2 and deeper ones on 3 to 5. Once I got the binding order, I can now open it reliably within half a minute (SPP). Great show effect, opening a 30+ Euro lock in 30- seconds. By the way, that little key pouch on the packaging, hiding the bitting from the front but fully exposing it from the rear... Same in the US?

Bill what would you recommend for a chain and padlock to secure a motorcycle?
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
First, I'd recommend some kind of disablement mechanism. Second, I'd recommend some kind of tracker. Third, park you bike in a secure area with physical and/or video surveillance. Last comes the lock and chain. Grab an Abloy disc detainer with a shielded shackle. For a chain, look at the Peweg with a 12mm thickness. Understand tho, that the chain will only resist a die grinder attack for roughly 4 minutes. After that, your bike is gone. So, you objective is to make your bike a less attractive target than the OTHER bikes parked nearby... Sad but true. I have a friend with an older Harley and lives in a nearby apartment complex. To protect his bike against theft, he wheels it through the double glass door into his living room at night. Hey, whatever works.

By the knog security standards this lock would be grandmas house level of security

These are good locks if it has deep biding like the one I found. Could only pick it twice.

At least the core can be replaced with something more suitable. That black retaining nut though, is it plastic or steel?
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
It is case hardened steel, pretty tough stuff. Still, it is the weak link in the system.

Master Lock management should be bowing their heads in shame. 😕

I think they don't have any shame.

They don't have any, because they are too busy laughing at people who buy their junk because they make tens of dollars for every penny they spend to make one of these locks.

Tried watching this video on different devices with different internet access and it never plays, stops, buffers. Been on the page several minutes and only got to 11 seconds. Have no issues with any other videos or channels. Even on 144p.

Solved (at least for me) I disabled a plugin called h264ify. KZbin streams VP9/8 codec but some cpu's (mine) struggle so h264ify forces h264 streaming instead. This for some reason was not playing nice with this video. I disabled the plugin and it plays. Re-enable plugin, problem presents itself again.

Bill, I commented on an earlier video but the audio problem is your noise reduction. Please do NOT filter and the problem will resolve itself. I ran into this same problem on my videos back when I was uploading and the solution is to eliminate or drastically cut back on your post processing.
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
That's the plan beginning on the next video. My filtering experiments to please a small number of viewers is at an end... I ended up making things worse instead of better -my bad.

Did you notice that the longer key pins sit right at the shear line? You would have only had to pick 2 pins if you spp'd it.

You know, it's funny. I've been watching Bill's vids for years. A few years back, I noticed that the padlock on the garage door control box was missing/stolen (I think I know what really happened to it but I won't elaborate here). So I went to a local hardware store and bought a Master padlock (a dial one with a key that lets you change the code). It's piss-weak. I tested it a few times. The code I selected doesn't work properly but you can open it with a few tries. Anyway, it hasn't been stolen yet. :)

Nice raking on poor old Master Lock. 🤣👏👍🔓Most Lock companies just make a scale up, and rate it themselves. Master Lock is the Master of Deception. They are pretty decent against physical attacks, but they have marshmallow cores. I would have at least expected one spool for their top of the scale lock. They do have spools in their inventory. I've seen them in other locks like the 7035.

Bill if the shacle is boron carbide it is a cheramic and might actualy take some timewith a diegrinder. I think you schould test that becous it might takesuprisingly long time and reqiere change of dies

so why do i see other videos of these opened up with all spools?
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
No clue, this is an unmodified core. I can ASSURE you that it WILL have serrated and spools before it leaves the LockLab tho.

Bill, I have this exact same lock I got on eBay some time ago. Was wondering how you fixed this lock? Didn't see anything else from you on it. I'm guessing you could re-pin it with american lock pins? But I agree the cylinder looks pretty sloppy. Did you find a replacement cylinder? I took an American cylinder and tried it in the lock , it fit but the engagement end is different and I couldn't seem to make it work? I know on American locks I put a spring and top pin in the last cylinder and a #4 pin and it gives you 6 pin security with a 5 pin bitted key. Ironically the exact same pin on Kwikset does the same thing, if you have a 6 pin cylinder. Worked like a charm on my Abus 83/45. Also I'm wondering do the master locks suffer the same problem as the American locks with the Peterson cylinder bypass tool? Sure looks like it would? Speaking of those wafers that you put in up to 3 of them to secure American locks, do you have a source to obtain them? Only ones I found were on eBay and they were $5.00 for a bag of 10. Seems kind of expensive. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

So, after I sent this yesterday, I decided to try my hand at picking this thing. Note I am probably the worlds worst lock picker lol. I wouldn't have much of a career as a burglar..... But any way it took me maybe 30 seconds to rake pick it lol. Wow if the world all used Master locks, i would have a thriving career as a burglar lol. Anyway all kidding aside it's pretty sad. The lock is build like a brick Shit house. And the core is a mess, I can't even imagine re-pinning it with spools and serrated pins is going to help much? Is there a better cylinder that can be put in this thing? American lock cylinders don't seem to work or I could make mine anyway? It's really too bad this lock would be awesome if it had some really secure core in it.

Should read , American lock cylinder don't seem to work or I couldn't make mine anyway.

And while we are on the subject of junk. I just bought a Master lock Magnum M50xkad with a security rating of 8 and racked it open in 30s econds. Then I spp’d it in a minute. And I’m not that good of a picker yet. I could not believe it.

Me too! When I saw that second driver I got a bad feeling about the rest of them. I almost ended the video at that point because I was so shocked (and ashamed for ML).

For a moment there, I had a glimmer of hope for Master Lock. But, alas it faded faster than a $1.00 beer.Bet they cannot even stand up to their old standard of being shot.
