Fabrics of any size in a quilt are not violations of copyright. If that were so, any dress made of it would be suspect.. as sold for profit, and they are not. Quilts can be sold with name designers fabrics in them, without sending royalties to the designer of the cloth. Their profit from their work is the sale of the cloth, not what you do with it, no matter how much your product is sold for.

Can you elaborate on Margaret's comment regarding the use of commercial fabric in a background being a copyright violation?

I think she meant you couldn’t use a direct copy of an artists work in your work. she was just inspired by an artist work.
