Those slugs will go through a small tree. I have witnessed a slug split an ironbark fence post in two and continue on into the wild blue yonder. They are quite dangerous as the will travel a long distance with not much backstop.

I may have missed it, but any update on that day/night scope you were testing? I ised to have a marlin 45-70 that i used for pigs. The stupid rules at the range meant i had to use cast loads with velocity below 1500fps to be range complaint for when I wanted to sight in. The hard cast load would go in one end of the pig and cone out the other end, dropping moat pigs on the spot. I actually couldn't believe how effective they were. Kind of sad I sold that rifle a while ago.

Hi, curious do you hard cast the lee slug or is it soft lead like say a typical federal rifled slug?

This was a tin/lead mix, made from roof flashing. Not sure if the exact mix.

@@fhckoutdoorsCan you scratch it with your finger nail? Reason I ask is if you were able to retrieve the slug comparing hard cast to soft lead the penetration, deformation, damage etc. Example of application might be in taking a NT buffalo, soft lead might not be enough but a hard cast slug may be plenty. Or maybe machine up some copper solids and compare. Perhaps a future project video.

I’m speculating only , but a softish wheel weight alloy should be just fine for the kill. Wether or not it passes through a large buff or bull is up for debate. The softer alloy potentially may be more consistent & accuracy wise that’s more important imo. Question is does striking heavy game through tough shoulders or angled shots have the penetration to drop big animals is the question ???? On paper the sectional density would be quite low & would suggest no . However the drive key part of the slug will help with the integrity of the slug , & impact velocity will also play a large roll in the performance & penetration. Personally a milder , more accurate shot placement slug , will perform better imo. However large animals at close range in thick scrub aren’t to be taken lightly 😁. I used to load solid round balls in my sxs muzzle loader & was sufficiently accurate at 50 m to have a go. The balls were heavier then my scales could measure.
