I've been on lake pleasant dozens of times and yes, it can get nasty in a hurry. If you see black clouds coming (usually from the north) DO NOT TRY TO CROSS THE LAKE AND GET TO THE BOAT RAMP, THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING. First, you have to cross the lake where it's the roughest, then you get to a ramp that's jammed full of other boats. What you do is find a cove, either pull up on the shore if smooth shoreline or throw out your anchors, tie a rope off to a tree if available and ride the storm out. In the cove with hills on both sides gives you a windbreak and the waves will be minimal. You may get wet from the rain but so what, you've been swimming all day anyway. Again, DO NOT HEAD FOR THE BOAT RAMPS!!!!! Also, if you catch yourself getting hit by these winds be sure to get your life vests on.

Seems like good advice but kinda scary, seems like you can get throw on the rocks (if anchored, or the boat can get pushed up onto the beach if beached) but overall I think that's good advice.

@@rm4po4 You won't get rocked in a cove surround with hills. I've been there, done that. I've also been on the lake when a storms hit. I've witnessed 5' swells on that lake, one time on a jet ski, down in swells where you couldn't see land for a few seconds. It's very dangerous to be out on that lake during a storm, it gets nasty. Getting to a ramp puts you directly out in it with other boats around you. Don't do it. Put your boat in a cove, tie it down the best you can and ride it out.

@@rapsux good advice, thanks. I've been out there in rain and some pretty choppy weather, but not too bad so far. On the choppy days, I definitely see an increase in first responder presence which is awesome.

@@rm4po4 When I say pull your boat up onto the shoreline, it's easier for me because I have a pontoon boat. As long as it's small gravel I'm good. Maybe regular boats you may want to rethink that. What I did is pull up on a shoreline with small gravel, throw out an anchor on both sides on the back side. I have a metal stake that I hammer down into the ground on the front side and tie off to that. If the ground is too rocky, try to find a bush, tree or rock to throw a rope around to keep the front from moving as well. This is how I stow the boat for the night as well if I'm leaving it in the water overnight when camping.

@@rapsux yeah, that makes sense. I have a motorboat and is be worried about being beached sideways. But if I used two anchors and a stake that'd probably keep the boat in place, but better yet, I think just anchored in the cove would be good for a motor boat. Thanks for the advice!

The boat rental places at Lake pleasant understand when to stop renting boats because of the storm or impending storm... Boat owners really need to check in with them if they are unsure whether it's safe.

My niece was on a rental boat with a bunch of her friends yesterday, and when the storm came up their boat listed, swamped & presumably sank. They swam to shore, but shore was a cliff they had to climb and one of her party broke her ankle during the climb. So there was at least one injury that I'm aware of.

It was a great day out until the storm started to roll in, saw a lot of people showing up right at about 4 just about when we were getting our boat loaded up is when it started sprinkling. There was more people putting their boat in the water than taking it out. Stupidity at its finest

I've been out there many times on my PWC, when you see those clouds forming you head to shore, load up and get the hell out of there, you can always go back another day. These folks are clowns that have no business boating.

@rm4po43 ай бұрын
Kayaks should just be able to pull up their boats on the shore and wait it out, I would think. It's the motorboats and pontoons that would struggle. Especially pontoons, the flat low floor probably scoops up water
