During the 12th celebrations and the many parades all over the six county's (it ain't just Belfast)it's reckoned around a quarter of a million people either take part or are in the bands or watch it.Tens of thousands travel from Scotland and England to take part or just visit to watch. To them who say its not as big that's fair comment but it still draws massive amounts of people from all over.
@Agnes1353 жыл бұрын
Tens of thousands DO NOT travel for the 12th. Maybe a few hundred or a thousand at best
@TheGiantKillers3 жыл бұрын
@@Agnes135 I'd have to agree. There's a lot of reasons for this but I think primarily it just boils down to nothing more than NI being more affluent as a society in general. People who have money in their pockets have more options open to them and so opt to go on holiday instead or visit a tourist attraction, or just shop with the day off. The twelfth also carries undercurrents of anti social behaviour which puts off the more affluent from attending. Finally we are in general a more liberal society, many people from a Unionist background no longer even identify as Protestant and state 'of no religion' in the census. They also don't rate the orange vs green question as importantly than their ancestors did, or those from more deprived areas still do. Indeed a 2021 survey of A Level students found that 72% placed the sovereignty question of Northern Ireland as being of low importance to them, placing it well below climate change and gender, sexuality and race issues. The bottom line is that as more and more young people grow up outside the Unionist and Nationalist confines, they care less about Britishness and Irishness. Many are opting to seek out the advantages in being both. This suggests the gradual creation of a new melding of green and orange politics into a shade of brown that gradually erodes both traditional stances over the remainder of this century. This will be something that is probably recognisable to many who find themselves living in more affluent NI, it will be totally unrecognisable to those who live in staunchly Unionist of Nationalist areas and will probably be something they find shocking and hard to believe.

After the partition of Ireland, Edward Carson repeatedly warned Ulster Unionist leaders not to alienate northern Catholics, as he foresaw this would make Northern Ireland unstable. In old age, while at London’s Carlton Club, he confided to the Anglo-Irish (and Catholic) historian Sir Charles Petrie his disillusionment with Belfast politics: “I fought to keep Ulster part of the United Kingdom, but Stormont is turning her into a second-class Dominion. Why did the unionists at that time ignore his words,shame on them.
