Independence is great as the U.k cannot have control over Mauritius. But then, it's lead to other societal problems, racism, corruption, destruction of national heritage. The list is long.

By analyzing the mountains on the background, I assume that Mauritius is greener today than it used to be 50 years back. As for those Who regret independence, I think they have no idea about geopolitics and I advise them to learn about mutually assured destruction . Due to geopolitical tensions between Russia and the west, the risks of nuclear exchange is very real. We would have risked being on the receiving end of nukes. Also Britain nowadays has 14 millions of its population in poverty with over 3 millions destitutes. In short we are shifting towards a multipolar world

SSR was not ALWAYS for Independence. SGD was not ALWAYS against independence. But as TRUE PATRIOTS they toiled together to make M what it is today. Of course a work continued and upgraded by SAJ and PB.

Duval played a role in all that forecasting the worst things would happen. That pushed many mauritians ( mulatres) to go living in Australia. CAM, the party of Razak Mohamed who signed in the coalition for independence. Then the sad memories of the bagarre racial. Thanks the MMM managed in the seventies to reunited the population. Today still exist the small Mauritian colony in Australia. Mauritius is the only multi racial model of this world. A lesson to all the Europeans. This is the beauty of the island at first place. 👍👍👍

Mauritius has come a long way, and we can say that it is fairly developped...It is true, there are issues like inflation and that the pay is not great but overall Mauritius can be said to be an economic success...After Seychelles we are the richest African nation...Don't you think that with colonialism there would be more racism, oppression and colorism?? Whites would be at the top of this hierarchy and all non Whites would be underneath them??

Neither is good. British colonialism, from old slavery to the modern day slavery, where the rich and powerful remains dominant and the poor or lower middle class continue to lose ground. During the tenure of most governments in Mauritius, corruption and autocracy and discrimination has been rife.
