Were any of those French police and officials brought to trial for collaborating with the Germans and their crimes?
@jfournerat12748 ай бұрын
Well it is complicated. Some of the French police and officials were brought to trial for their crimes and punished with prominent examples of that being Phillipe Petain and Pierre Laval. Phillipe Petain was found guilty and was initially sentenced to death but his sentence was then later commuted to life imprisonment where he then spent the rest of his days before dying in prison in 1951 while Pierre Laval who was also found guilty was sentenced to death and was then executed. However in other cases although some of the collaborators were brought to trial it often took years and even decades before that happened. A prominent example is of Paul Touvie who was responsible for the deaths of countless Jews and restince fighters. After the end of ww2 Paul went into hiding and it wasn’t until over 40 years later in 1989 that he was finally captured where he then eventually died in prison in 1996. Unfortunately many other French collaborators were never punished for their crimes with a prominent example being Maurice Papuon. Maurice as a senior police official willingly oversaw the deportation of 1600 Jewish people to Drancy and from there to Auschwitz and other concentration camps and of those 1600 people who were deported very few of them survived with the rest of the people being killed thus making Maurice responsible for their deaths. After the end of the war he wasn’t imprisoned and it took until 1998 for him to be put on trial and sentenced for his crimes and although he was found guilty he was only sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released 3 years later in 2001 and unfortunately before he could be put back in prison he then died in 2007.

The German army has not "easily defeated" the French army...the French army was betrayed by Philippe Petain, supreme commander of the army at that moment...who made a deal with Hitler...The French army won 2 tank battles but were outmanouvred...so the faith of the Jews was sealed after the French defeat but they fought heroically
@generalpanzerfaust23872 жыл бұрын
The French were literally easily defeated tho. Except at Lille
@marcelmagnette2 жыл бұрын
@@generalpanzerfaust2387 true, the French were defeated in almost 6 weeks, but that didn't mean that the Germans suffered no significant losses, they lost over 700 aircraft to the l'Armee de l'Air and 1/3 of their ( too light ) panzers...150.000 death or wounded in the field...the French lost 350.000, these numbers indicate a hard campaign...The Germans took Creta in one week but with very heavy losses and they conquered Western Russia in 1 month, half the road to Moscow but again by a high price...my point is, the short duration of a battle doesn't mean that it was easy...in Napoleon's time , wars were won or lost in 1 day...Waterloo, Austerlitz, etc...there's much writing about the so called blitzkrieg in France and in my opinion, the Germans won because they had outstanding Commanders...Rommel, Guderian, von Manstein...the French generals were old men who did not grasp the tactics of modern warfare, except de Gaulle...The Luftwaffe could hardly been defeated in the Battle of Britain but they lost...why?.. because Air Marshall Hugh Dowding was a better tactician than Reichsmarshall Hermann Goring...

@@CorsetLebelle partly true...don't forget that WW I was fought on French soil wich turned the fertile land into a desolate dessert of mud and corpses...so they suffered far more than the Germans and it was not over yet by 1940...they also were deeply involved in colonial wars in the Interbellum...but yes, the French soldier was not so motivated as the German...but the German army was on drugs...technically, they were equal...the French Char B 1 was a stronger tank than the Panzer II or III and the Dewoitine fighter was equal to the Messerschmitt 109-E...the French had even a divebomber, the Loire-Nieuport LN 40...but that doesn't really matter when the generals don't know how to use it...
