I'm Uruguayan and I have to admit that at that time Uruguayan football players were pretty dirty. If they had concentrated on playing rather than intimidating their opposition things would've turned out better for them. Having said that things definitely changed after 1986. And these days you'd be hard up finding a Uruguayan team that goes out on the pitch with the same cynical tactics. Times have changed and so have attitudes. Thank God.

I remember watching this game live. The worst thing was that if Uruguay had tried to just play and win the game they would have done so. They were the better team, but were too scared to just play the game. so the game is remembered for their butchery. A great shame and injustice perpetrated upon themselves by themselves. Cowardice over football.
@Moncho12345 жыл бұрын
I do not agree. Uruguay was not the better side. They had great players, that´s for sure, but the coach was terrible and the team played awfully. This game is remembered for the referee Joel Quiniou making his best for Scotland. Shame and cowardice over football.
@fernandomendioroz82265 жыл бұрын
Uruguay was grotesquely coached during 1982 to 1986... its best player during that time, Ruben Paz, was never in the squad until Mexico 1986, where he was absurdly kept in the bench until the last match when he almost alone change history during the few minutes he played in the second half... Venancio Ramos in the bench almost always, Hugo De León, Ruben Sosa out of the squad, some other players playing in wrong positions (e.g. Francescoli), a complete disaster. When Ruben Paz got into the pitch during the match against Argentina there was a glimpse of the brilliance that squad could have produced (and still Hugo De León and Ruben Sosa were not there, Diogo was unfairly suspended after this match -as well as Batista-, Francescoli playing out of his place, etc.). Uruguay killed itself in this world cup having the best squad of its illustrious football history (Ruben Paz, Francescoli, Ruben Sosa, Hugo De León, Venancio Ramos, Alzamendi, Gutiérrez, Diogo, Fernando Álvez, Jorge Da Silva, Carlos Aguilera, etc.), most of them in the bench and some not even in the squad. Best generation wasted by the worst coach ever.

2:08 - Here another Attempt to hit the opponent, which if done, would deserve the red card. Historically Uruguayans play soccer believing that violence and foul play may impose Suarez showed it once again. They call it "having fighting spirit".
@AntonesPap3 жыл бұрын
This fighting spirit is called Gárra Charrúa & is a big part of Uruguayan mentality. It is about showing courage & never giving up in the face of adversity. It is not about being violent, as the 1986 side sadly suggested. In the 1950 final, Uruguay committed only 11 fouls, while Brazil committed 21. In the words of longtime Uruguay manager Óscar Tabárez, Gárra Charrúa means "toughening yourself without losing your tenderness". thesefootballtimes.co/2020/08/12/garra-charrua-and-the-psychology-of-uruguayan-football/

Seeding Denmark in the fourth pot was a very bad decision in WC 1986 .. The same pot with Canada , Iraq , Algeria , South Korea and Morocco The result is Group E : Germany - Uruguay - Scotland - Denmark .. The reason why Denmark was seeded in the bottom is because that was their first ever World Cup .. In my opinion that was unfair .. Denmark was a very good team ( even if it was their first appearance ) and several other teams seeded higher than them could have been in pot 4 instead .. which could have made the six groups more balanced .. Teams like Hungary , Bulgaria , Paraguay and northern Ireland .. .. On the other hand , Scotland could have had a better chance to qualify to the knock out stages if they played in another easier group .. I really wanted to see them in round of 16 .. Scotland appeared in 9 World cups ( 1954 , 1958 , 1962 , 1974 , 1978 , 1982 , 1986 , 1990 and 1998 ) but never ever managed to pass the group stage ..
