Hi Eric - Have you had any luck with Dorman lower control arm bushings for Toyota Camry? I need to replace the bushings and the dealer parts dept wants $150 per control arm. Also, I saw some kind of investment spam in the comments so I reported it to KZbin.

And for the "Shade Tree" types that don't have a press or that nifty cutting tool ... take a hack saw blade off, insert thru the bushing metal retainer, reinstall blade and cut a notch in the bushing housing and, after removal of the hack saw, hammer and chisel on the edge of the cut and she'll pop open. As for the Press, toss the new bushings into the house Freezer for a few hours and it will contract enough to slide in by hand; may have to warm up the mating surface on the metal trailing arm orifice to gain a few thousands more but it will go in by hand.

Had my ford dealer quote me over 1300 to replace my rear trailing arms as they said they were bad and would not pass inspection. Had my local garage perform the inspection and quote me on the cost. One they could not find why the dealer said they were bad. Two they said it would cost less than a quarter of the cost they quoted me at if they needed done. Glad to support my local shop!!!

When we swap these out at the Volvo dealership (Fords and Volvos from this era use the same platform in some cars), we actually do them in the car, just take off the shock absorber bolt, and loosen the short arms that connect to the hub assembly, then after getting the bolts out of the bushing use a large pry bar to wedge the bushing down enough so you can air hammer it and push in a new one.
@seeya2052 жыл бұрын
I just take 2 or 3 bolts out and just loosen the last one. Take the two bolts out of the frame and it will come down enough to get the air hammer in. At least with the Fords. I don't work on Volvos.

I used the Dorman bushing and it worked great. It was a pain in the butt getting apart without a lift getting enough leverage to brake the bolts loose. It went back together better then I thought it would. Thanks for the video, saved my daughter a bunch of money

Bit more expensive for sure but ride quality is still great and I'll never have to change em again. If you start getting wear on inside edge of the rear tyres, defo suspect the trailing arm bushes

Use the moog if available. I did these this afternoon with the dorman part . PIA . Even with the new bushing in the freezer for days and heating up the arm with a torch , still bashed the hell out of it . Ended up taking away metal where the bushing resides , little by little until the bushing fit tight . Popped the bushing back out , coated it with green loctite sleeve retainer , drove it back in , bolted it back together and let it sit . Strange the passenger side was completely shot , but the drivers side was still in great shape .
@Mike-zu1yy Жыл бұрын
I did the same with the moog part and it was also hard to get in. Only my passenger side was bad as well. The bushing slowly separated and became offset in the sleeve even though the rubber was still pretty good. I believe it is due to my trailing arm wanting to sit closer to the middle of the car (I had to pry it outwards to line the two bolts next to the bushing up). So this one will likely do the same with time as the are has inward pressure so there is constant sideways force on the bushing. As the sleeve corroded the rubber will slowly separate as well. I think I'd have to get an adjustable toe link to fix this. The passenger side does look to have a bit more toe in than the driver side on my car.

@SouthMainAuto My right rear bushing was pushing out of the trailing arm towards the outside of the car. Upon putting a new bushing in and putting the 3 bolts on the trailing arm, the bushing end of the trailing arm indeed does not line up, rather wants to sit way off towards the center of the car. This will once again make the new bushing fail (push to the outside of the car) I believe this is due to excessive toe in. Is there a way to adjust the toe without buying aftermarket adjustable toe links? I do not see any info or videos on the internet with how to adjust the rear toe on Escapes factory suspenion.

Doorman has gotten a bad rap over the years, a lot of it earned. I’m not sure I trust their electronics but a lot their basic parts seem to be reliable and they fit. I replaced an intake manifold on a Ford 4.6 with a Doorman. That was 140,000 miles ago. The coolant runner on the OEM had an O ring failure and it was the upgrade from when Ford discovered the the issue on the plastic ones. This one leaked into the spark plug holes on 5&6 causing misfires. The Doorman fit and was a third of the price of the OEM. I made the decision to use the Doorman since the replacement OEM was the same design as the failed one.

Hey Eric, how many miles on that Escape? Thanks for the video. I didn't know that Dorman parts were good I've always had mostly bad luck with their steering and suspension parts. I'm surprised you stated they work OK on those trailing arms. We all know how bad Dorman can be with automotive parts they're more of a miss than a hit. In my books Dorman only gets used when there is nothing else available in the market it's my last resort case scenario. The audio quality is superb with your new camera 👍 Thanks.
