Oh my goodness yes… I vote for kindness … I JUST observed someone (not on a ship but on a plane YELLING (in a spiteful rage) that she was going to freak out if the man behind her would not stop pushing the tray table (he was a larger man; 65 years old and could not help it.) she should know that there are so many kinder ways of expressing something … the spirit of meanness has to go …

Choose fixed dining -early/late or at your preferred time. This way you have a reserved table for the first night while there are long lines at anytime dining or at the buffet. Then, after dinner we simply asked the maitre d to change us to anytime dining as we didn't want to be held to a schedule.

We purposely ate at the buffet on boarding day dor our kids first cruise. I wanted to show them all the options and give them the layout. It wasn't the best meal for the adults but it eased the kids into the cruise.

Don't show up TOO early. Remember there will be passengers still disembarking in the morning so you probably won't be able to get onboard before 10am regardless. Both embarkation and disembarkation times are staggered to avoid long lines and traffic jams. Don't try to circumvent this. I live in an port town, have gone on a few cruises, worked shoreside operations for a cruise line, and work two blocks away from a cruise terminal.

I tell this story every time I can. You are SO right about being sure to take a carry-on and have at least a day's change of clothing. A few years ago we took an Alaska cruise on HAL. We flew into Vancouver, BC. We each had a carry-on and had checked one bag with the airline -- and the airline sent the checked bag to San Francisco! I always carry our prescription meds in my purse so that was not a problem, but when I packed our carry-ons I didn't include extra shirts for my husband. I had also, to avoid the hassle at the airport, put our toiletries into the checked bag. So we were without toothpaste, deodorant, etc. and my husband was not pleased with the idea of wearing the same shirt for several days. We went down to Guest Services to find out when, how, and if our checked bag would show up. Guest Services were wonderful! My husband had hardly begun our story when the lady reached under the counter and pulled out two little plastic zipper pouches, each containing toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant stick, and several other necessary items. She then located our bag and found it would be sent to the first port we were visiting and would be waiting for us there. (In fact, when we came back to our stateroom from breakfast that day, there the bag was, waiting for us!) And finally she asked what size shirt my husband wore and brought him a "loaner" with the remark, "When it gets dirty, bring it back and we'll give you another one"! This is not the only time HAL Guest Services has come through for us, but it is the one I remember best!

As a frequent cruiser (79-year old female doing her 80th cruise June 18), I can assure you that things will get better a few hours after you get on the ship. You will have done the muster check-in, will have access to your cabin to get rid of luggage. In addition, the buffet will have available seating and the elevators will not be overwhelmed. (Exception, on Carnival and maybe other cruise lines, the mid-ship elevators will not be available to passengers since they are being used to ferry luggage to cabins. You will have to use only front or aft lifts to reach your staterooms. By dinner time, all should be normal and you should be able to relax, enjoy a cocktail and plan your evening activities.

I definitely recommend flying in 2 days ahead, especially if international from where you live. My last cruise we planned to fly in the day before and we ended up having a major delay (21 hours due to a plane issue) and we had to rush from the airport to the ship. We made it but we're exhausted from an international flight (9hrs) and then the 3 hr travel from airport to cruise port. My next cruise we are flying in 2 days ahead of time as we learned our lesson.

If you have the drink package, BAR HOP on embarkation day! Find the bar that feels like home and get an early start getting to know your bartenders. By midweek you'll probably have gone through the full drink menu and they'll have an idea of the drinks you like, and in my experience they can go off-menu to make unique drinks just for you.

A few months before my last cruise, I booked the Italian Restaurant for as soon as they opened on the first night. I received great service, and there were only 3 other tables in use while I was there. On the flip side, I was snacking at various places since boarding and did not have an appetite once I was seated. And boy, they just keep bringing out the food. I had to take my chicken parm to go in a box and never ended up eating it. You cannot reheat it in your stateroom. Pace yourself on what you eat on your first day.

Great information Ilana. The muster drill is so easy now verses prior to covid there is no reason not to do it as soon as you watch the video. Last cruise we avoided the buffet and that was great. Sometimes spent more time trying ti fundva place to sit than it took to actually eat lunch on embarkation day. Unpacking as soon as our bags arrive always seems a waste if time yet an experienced cruiser told me before our first that you will not feel relaxed and ready to enjoy your cruise till that chore is done. He waa right and that is our top item to do. Then on to to the balcony to chill out and enjoy sail away! Happy cruising Illana!

The 'carry on' point is SO important! On a recent cruise I took on Symphony of the Seas, I didn't actually get my suitcase until about 7.30pm (after we'd already left the port), so it was so important for me to have a change of clothes in my carry on for dinner. Historically, I'd always advise taking clothes for the pool etc on day 1, but I never realised I sometimes may not get my case until a good bit later!

I definitely recommend flying in the day before it starts the vacation off you get a some time to explore the port your leaving from in my case it was miami I also highly recommend the steakhouse on the first night of your cruise. My boyfriend and I did that, and it was amazing and we got a complimentary bottle of wine which was a plus we'll be making that apart of our tradition for sailing from now on. 😊

It depends on which meds you are taking. Meclizine(Bonine) can be taken the night prior. Other meds like dramamine you can just wait to see if you need it. Dramamine works faster but for a shorter duration. You can stack both of those if you hit a storm and everything is tossing(including your stomach!). I work on commercial fishing boats. Meclizine does nothing for me so I don't take it. I just dose with dramamine as needed until I get my "sea legs". Then I'm good for the season. The people who refuse to take meds are generally sick the longest and have the most reoccurrence of sea sickness later in the season IME.

Just took a cruise with a great niece and my parents that adopted have adopted grandchildren. The biggest mistake we made was not having the appropriate paperwork. I needed parental authorization to take great niece out of the country which required getting the paperwork printed, completed and notarized by one of the parents. My parents had to have a neighbor enter their home, we were in FL and they live in OH, to search for final decree of adoption and send to them. What a hectic embarkation with us thinking the cruise may be cancelled. Luckily we were early and had the time to engage all needed parties to get the necessary documentation.

We finished our first cruise in April and did a lot of research and watched a ton of videos (yes yours too). Don't remember who made the recommendation to book a specialty dinning the first night but seemed to make sense to me. We dined at Sabatini's on the Ruby Princess and it was fantastic. What happens if you realize you left something important in your car/hotel room, like the baby’s bag with all his formula? As long as the ship is still in port, are you allowed to leave it to retrieve the bag, and if not, do the ships even have formula to sell? I literally just woke up from this dream (nightmare, really!), so now I’m curious.

Just got off Wonder of the Seas last week. We’ve cruised before but your videos helped. Our rooms were ready by 2pm as the sign blocking the hallways advised. Our luggage was in two different hallways so we just grabbed them ourselves. The service in the dining room was the best we’ve ever had and our head waiter spoke with us every night. There was no issues or any hectic feeling in the MDR either. It’s only the cruisers first night, not the staffs. Everything was great and all around the best service we’ve ever seen. Overall, from dropping off luggage to the porters and walking on the ship was 40 minutes. Much faster than previous cruises. The app and online checkin are a blessing. Thanks for the videos.

I don't know where best to ask this question, so am asking here. Is it necessary to have a smart phone to have a good cruising experience? I do not have a smart phone...just a flip phone with talk and text. It seems like most advice channels say things like "download your cruise app," and "don't bring a camera...just use your phone." Am I just a hopeless cause if I'd rather save money for a cruise than pay for a smart phone and plan?

I don't think so, although I do have a smart phone. I've hardly used my phone at all on cruises. If I really have to call or text, I just wait till I'm at the port. If it's a place where I've never been, I bring my camera because I'd rather have good pictures. I live to turn off my phone and a cruise ship is the only place I can get away with that!

The unpack only once is such a great part of cruising. I'm a serial over packer. I'm so bad even Rick Steves barely helped me out. But on a cruise it's fine to pack more than you'd normally want to pack on a traditional land based trip. There are even some lines where your cabin attendant might unpack for you, or at the very least ask if any of your clothes or shoes need attention. I've gotten to the point I don't really do the package type land tours in Europe anymore.

She took it upon herself to “go look for it”. she found it on the cart, and then proceeded to take another passenger’s luggage (on the same deck) to them as if it was a favor….fyi, she had already started on her drink package😅

One tip, which is region specific, and thus I'm speaking for Australia only right now, make sure you have an image of your negative RAT, and vaccination certificates ready to show, this is especially important for P&O Australia as they recently stopped using VeriFLY. Ilana I really hope you and your family make your way down here one day. We have some wonderful places you can cruise, from here in Australia itself, I'd recommend the Barrier Reef and Tasmania, to some lovely regional locations from NZ to Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia. We even have cruises to Indonesia and parts of Asia.

Howdy Ilana, Not a rookie cruiser, but, anyone can make an error. Came to watch the video because it is one of your newer videos. Many people forget to watch the video. First thing I do while I wipe down the room then put some stuff in the safe. Not a pool person. The Room Steward always comes by and introduces themself. Ask if you have any special needs. Have eaten in a specialty restaurant on my last cruise. My late wife was looking forward to eating there. Usually enjoy the balcony for the sail away. Also, that time, if luggage came, is good for putting things away.

We’ve cruised at least once a year for the past 20 years and all of your tips are fabulous and spot on. One of them was actually new for me… I didn’t know I could visit the dining room on embarkation day and request a table change if I didn’t like the one I had been assigned. What a great tip! We are cruising in Europe later this summer on the enchanted princess and I’ll have to give this a try. Thanks Llana!

Beach Excursion Questions: This will be our 1st cruise (to the Caribbean). During beach excursions, what do people do with their personal items (I dont want to leave them on the beach and there's too much to carry with me while I'm swimming)? Someone suggested we bring our passports when we go out for the day (in case we miss our ship or get sick) is that necessary or will an Enhanced Drivers License suffice? I'm also curious as to the process of renting a "clamshell" or umbrella on the beach excursions. Thank you for all your videos. I feel better prepared to enjoy our cruise!

Ms. Ilana, wonderful video. I sailed the NCL Getaway in March 2023. They required a full-blown muster drill where we reported to Muster stations, had our room key scanned, and then sat through a presentation how to don a life vest. It took place later in the afternoon before Sailaway, and when it was done I dashed to the upper decks only to see the ship already moving down the Hudson River! But I managed to catch the Statue of Liberty. Thank you for your presentations! Gardis in CT

#1 tip is to speak to your cabin steward on embarkation day. They are a wealth of knowledge and resources. They can point out where Power sockets are hidden On shorter Princess cruises (3 nights or under) I ask for an extra coffee table… I use that and the one already in the room to place in the walk-in wardrobe area and place my suitcase on it to save fully unpacking whilst having easy access with out bending over On the longer cruises I always ask for extra hangers so I can hand everything including tee shirts I ask for extra towels to be delivered every time they make up the room for the rest of the cruise. It can also be a great time to ask what extra little perks they can assist with… like a bathrobe or different pillows etc. They also often know how to fix problems quicker than anyone else on board… if they can’t help directly they’ll almost certainly point you to exactly the right person The cabin stewards are always help and friendly and getting to know them early can have a huge impact on the comfort of your cruise

What is bidding for upgrades?? I've never heard of that. Thanks for all the tips!!
@Carolmaizy
@Carolmaizy Жыл бұрын
You can often, at a certain point before your cruise, submit a bid to upgrade- from an inside cabin to an ocean view or even a balcony, or from a balcony cabin to a suite, etc. We've done it twice and been accepted, about 30 days before the cruise. It is easily done on the app. Just know that if there are two of you, the bid is doubled. We got an upgrade from inside to balcony for 160 dollars each, last cruise. Great deal, since the fare was a casino comp. So for 1000 dollars we had a bacony for two, all gratuities, insurance, taxes, and port fees for a 7 day Bermuda cruise from Boston.

@@Carolmaizy The bid is doubled even for a solo cruiser.
@Carolmaizy
@Carolmaizy Жыл бұрын
@@CathyGoes that doesn't seem fair. I'm almost 66. I can see myself years from now having to cruise solo, and paying almost as much as I do now, for just myself. Cruise lines should provide more single cabins, but I guess it cuts down on their revenue.
@CathyGoes
@CathyGoes Жыл бұрын
@@Carolmaizy I don't want more tiny little interior solo cabins and segregated solo areas with the assumption that we all want to party and drink with other solo travelers. I do want more cruises to allow solo travelers to only pay for one though. NCL allows solos to only pay for themselves rather than the standard double occupancy on a lot of their cruises when they don't anticipate hitting 100% capacity. I'm signed on for an Alaska cruise right now and I'm only paying for myself. Upgrade bids are still double though which is annoying.
@Carolmaizy
@Carolmaizy Жыл бұрын
@@CathyGoes I understand your point. I wouldn't use the solo area lounge myself, and I'm a coffee drinker. If I were ever to travel as a single, I'd be content to be alone- not looking for company. I didn't know NCL would discount the double room when not at full occupancy. Thanks for the info.

One of my favorite parts of cruising is the main dining room. They have some pretty unique food options that you just won’t find on land plus I love meeting new people as table mates. 99% of the time you end up with good table mates, and you sort of Get sad on the last night because you know you might not see them again. They were doing table sharing before it was ever cool on land. And it’s only cool on land at breweries and food halls. Even though I like it any place.

I NEED to tell everyone that all of Ilana's links for Amazon cruise items are not only great values but the best prices and reviews. As an Amazon Prime member, I've CHECKED, because a lot of the items (i.e. the phone charger powerbank, which she recommends and is at 20000 mAh, which is the MINIMUM I recommend, having bought quite a few over the years) are well worth it for any cruiser. .
