I’m from same city Chuck lived so Scream Bloody Gore was my death metal origin story even though like you said, it was just more extreme thrash to us since death metal wasn’t an established term yet. Admittedly the vocals weren’t my favorite at first. Once Leprosy came out, i was all in and couldn’t get enough of that style.
@analogarchives

Aww cool man, I guess we all have our journey stories for sure. I do remember in an interview with chuck he cited Possessed as one of their main influences but so many bands were influences from the early days like Sodom, Kreator and Hellhammer which get more credit for Black Metal more than anything, which I can see as well. I think it was just a progression from those bands and thrash getting more commercial that spawned the extreme style . Cheers

Hi Dennis!!! epic video dude..... your death metal collection is epic. I'm not a fan of the genre just know and like some stuff from the early days but loved how you explain ypur journey into this type of music from the early bands like Possessed, Death, Sepultura and then moving forward with lots of cool record from the late 80's. cheers and thanks for sharing

Thanks for the response, you started a lot earlier than I did for sure But that is metal in general. In 85' I was in 5th grade and mainly listening to was on MTV, Michael Jackson and stuff like that. In 86' I bought my first "metal" album which is Poison Look at what the Cat Dragged In. It was 86 as well when I first heard Iron Maiden Killers.. that is pretty much kicked everything of for me. Heard Metallica Ride the lightening that year. I got Possessed Seven Churches that year as well and slew of other stuff like Overkill, Megadeth and Anthrax. I first heard Slayer Reign In Blood and Sepultura Schizophrenia sometime in 87 or 88. Then the darker stuff like Celtic Frost and the First Wave BM bands around that same time. In 89 or 90 I heard bands like Cannibal Corpse and Death but I thought Death was heavy ass thrash and CC was garbage haha. I'd say that was 90 leading up to 93. But 93 I was in my 2nd Thrash band and we got a new guitarist that listen to death metal and he pretty much introduced me to a whole new world of extreme music. Just a little history.. may do a video on it soon. I still have that Poison cassette hahaha

Got Ride The Lightning in 84 and never looked back, haha. I was already listening to Motley Cure, Dio , WASP , Armored Saint etc. I was def in the minority listening to thrash at the time and all "metal" dudes hated it and called it trash, until Master Of Puppets came out and then everyone was a Metallica fan, blah.
@stevesekora
@stevesekora Жыл бұрын
@@analogarchives hell yea, the first time I heard Metallica I remember I thought it was a bunch of screaming crap haha. Originally my buddy dubbed off JP Defenders of the Faith on an old 90 minute maxwell and he said he would dubbed "something that would knock my socks off" on side B... It was Ride The Lightening" ..it took a little bit for me to like it but once it did, as you said as well. No looking back. That was the same year they released Master Of Puppets but I'm pretty sure I heard Kill Em' All before that. My Kill Em' All cassette had AM I Evil on Side A and Blitzkrieg on side B. I'm not sure what edition it was but I know when I bought the Megaforce CD that it didn't have those tracks on it.

The only difference being… most of those demos you have… I heard thru dubbed tapes that were 6 or 7 times copied… so didn’t sound the greatest… & when the albums came out it was like an audio revelation to me, lol! Can clearly recollect the one album that started my path into Death Metal. A friend of mine played me Dominus - View to the Dim and it was the heaviest shit I ever had heard at that point. Have not looked back since. Imagine that one was hooked by Death Metal by a band that basically later became Volbeat. Ha ha. This records still kills by the way so if anyone have not heard it check it out.

Great overview man, and your demos are insane. With the Swedish demos, did you write away to get those from zines and wait three months for shipping from Europe? Or did they show up locally? So awesome. The only thing I'd argue is the 35mm vs. VHS. Man if you ever are lucky enough to see a film in 35mm, then a quality Blu-ray SHOULD look exactly the same. VHS is cropped and magnetic media can't take the resolution. So looking at it from the perspective of archiving, Blu-ray is king (UHD with HDR is often the step too far) if done right as it can be 1 to 1 replication (look at Vinegar Syndrome's work!) alsmost approaching the resoultion. If you PREFER watching it on VHS, that is entirely a different matter though! Would like to hear you talk about 93 and onwards black metal that you got into that you mentioned, let's see those Emperor demos!
@analogarchives
@analogarchives Жыл бұрын
Bad analogy for 35mm but I meant it as a form of physical analog recording rather than a digital source. I def dig those Vinegar Syndrome Blu rays though, good quality for sure. I will def do a BM vid soon with some obscure stuff that kinda got lost in the mix. I do have that Emperor demo, haha

Albums that got me into Death Metal Venom - Welcome to Hell Metal Massacre 6 compilation tracks Dark Angel - Slaughter House Possessed - Swing of the Axe ( which was more Death Metal than either studio album which I found less Brutal) Destruction - Debut Ep ( Sentence of Death was completely Satanic) Sodom - In the Sign of Evil ( also 100% Satanic) Kreator - Pleasure to Kill ( the most extreme album at the time ,and all the songs were 100 % Death & Horror) Carcass - Reak of Putrefaction ( educated Horror lyrics) Xecutioner demo

Such killer stuff man. Luckily for me a lot of those demos got reissued in collections or deluxe editions later on. The only one you showed that I’ve tried and I just think is ok is Necrophagia. Killjoy’s vocals are not that great on it. He basically just talked through the songs. It’s just not a record that sounds as hard and nasty as it looks. I own it and every once in awhile spin it thinking I’m going love it and each time left underwhelmed. Early Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, Nihilist were just miles ahead of that band in every way. That’s probably why it doesn’t get as much love except by their heavy fan base. Anyway love your videos. That Morbid Angel sticker story is awesome! Thanks again for the content.

The first actual official Death Metal album I personally owned was Obama - Slowly We Rot. I never heard of Death until 1995. Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back to Life was my second factory pressed Death Metal album ( talk about a Thrash Metal sounding album) .Of course I already owned Carcass and Boltthrower albums ( but people told me that they were not Death Metal ( Grindcore 😂). To me Reak of Putrefaction was poorly produced Death Metal. Until I bought Suffocation, Reak was the most Brutal Death Metal I've ever heard. I can understand labeling Napalm Death as Grindcore ( since it sounded like a messy garage Hardcore Punk Album). Other than the short duration of songs Reak met the Death Metal criteria
