There was one basketball player named Leon Huff. He was born in USA, but he went to play basketball in Europe. So he ended up in Finland. They got a half-time show, when someone put a coin on the backboard and Leon jumped and took the coin in the air. And thats a true story. He did it many times. Now his son, Shawn Huff, plays in Finlands National team, and is the best dunker there, but he still says that hes not the best dunker in his family. Leon is now over 60 years old, but still he can dunk

Actually theres a old video i saw showing WIlt Chamberlin with 13.5max vertical reach while trying to grap a rebound. The tip of his finger was beyond the top of the backboard.

The knowledge of basketball on these posts is astounding...The man in the video can certainly jump. As stated he will never grab the top of the board and hang on because he requires a huge run up. He may be able to pull a coin as he passes from the side, but only a two foot jump with little forward momentum could duplicate the stories from previous legends such as the Goat. Also, dunkers23 is blind, if that guy is 7 foot then the crowd around him is the tallest collection of people I have seen

PUT A QUARTER ON THE TOP OF BACKBOARD AND GRAB THAT!!! Then there will be no debate.

That's quite incredible. I wish the NBA All Star game had this event. David Thompson (6' 4") claimed he could touch the top of the backboard and Dwight Howard (6' 9") touched 12' 6" on an ESPN's Sport Science show. Wilt and world record (8 feet) high jumper Javier Sotomayer (6' 4") would be interesting. Connie Hawkins and Michael too. Dwight Howard, incidentally, broke Shaq's record of 9' 5".

Ralph Sampson was THE ONLY GUY EVER who could touch the top of the backboard FROM a STANDING JUMP. 7'4" tall, 10'0" standing reach, 36"+ vertical, and 40"+ one step jump. If Ralph was an olympic high jumper, he would have set the record so high, that it wouldn't have been broken for centuries, and perhaps millenia. One thing that probably surprises people is that Shawn Bradley could touch the top of the backboard in his younger days, but not as high as Ralph. watch?v=k0YUN4DBIgo

No, a recent controversy proved that it wasn't 12 inches. It was 11.5. Now they're making a change over at Subway.
@RozzamaTRON16 жыл бұрын
whilst your first point is valid, his vert would have to be way more than 36" with your arms up, you add about 25% to your height - if he is 6'8", his reach is about 8'3", maybe if he does have long arms we can bring this up to around 8'9" absolute maximum. which would still give him a vert of about 50 inches. unless of course he's much taller, in which case it's impressive that he's getting himself off the ground in the first place

I think it was cuz he's a one footed jumper. Unlike jumping off of two feet, where you're more vertical from leap to landing, when jumping off of 1 foot you tend to travel farther. He would have had to try on like the side of the backboard, although still reaching. Otherwise his momentum would take him into the backboard. So I think it was much easier to reach straight above him than touch the top of the bb.
@TheRokas9412 жыл бұрын
Are you fucking kidding me? That is insane! Do you have any idea how much force a tall, heavy guy has to create in order to get so high? I am 17 years old 6'10" at the moment (still growing alot. 4 inches a year) and I am training so intense to jump ~33 inches of the ground. I can do 1 rep on a sit down machine with ~150kg. Try to imagine how much weight he uses. The guy jumps ~50 inches!!!

So what? Wilt Chamberlain used to take change down from the top of the backboard when he was in the Harlem Globetrotters. This guy isn't even trying to do that, he's just jumping up and they are measuring how high his hand goes. He's not even trying to touch the top of the backboard.

Actually I pulled random numbers indirectly out my ass. The exact route they took was through my fingertips and onto my keyboard. However, my point was that Julzellis was wrong when he said "His reach is probably close to 10'... which makes his vertical 36" give or take 2-3 inches" Thanks to your keen observation, I realise I neglected the tendancy of basketball players to have freakishly long arms, so his standing reach is probably about 9'2" making his vert a still-impressive 46".

Type in "Ralph Sampson dunk on Worthy" in the search box on youtube. Samson's not even giving like 60% on that jump, plus it's in a game when he's already tired. That and he's got like a 10' Standing reach(even Shaq has a 9'8" standing reach. I don't think even one in ever 100 Billion Human Beings would be able to have a higher touch than Ralph Sampson without using a ladder, trampoline, or some other kind of aid.

Wilt Chamberlain was a high school jumping champion. He high jumped 6 feet. Then broad jumped 22 feet. He was reported to have an 50 inch vertical. Again, reported. But I'm pretty sure if Wilt back in his prime put his mind to it, he could touch anything. Westbrook is nowhere close to 50.
