For the student suicide rate, all's are grundless rumors. Maybe some bad students who hate studying, regardless of the nationalities, may spread the rumors. Don't buy it. busyhoney bee of course "hard studying" isn't gonna kill anyone it's the combination of parents' expectations + the school's expectations + the lack of sleep that stresses the student out.. not to mention that everyone deals with their own problems especially teens who're still growing (mentally) that's a whole bunch of unnecessary stress literally pushed upon the student, I'm not even surprised their suicide rate is that high also suicide is the number 1 cause of death amongst South Koreans aged 10 to 20

The extra studying should be needed when they’re failing not when they’re succeeding so much that if their grade drops a point they think about dying. In germany its like :7 hours at school in 10th class. Sometimes studying two or three hours. But nobody goes to an academy or even a library. So i dont know if everyone will agree with this but i think this is common in germany.
@tjqueen_6 жыл бұрын
I don't know from which part you come from, but in Berlin it's definitely the same. Like I get up, go to school (depends on whether I'm in sixth form or lower school 8-10 school hours per day) and then just go home, maybe do my homework (in total like 1-2h) and do other stuff. But I guess that's just me, because I don't actively revise, I just study the night before a test, if I have one (ich meine mit test Klassenarbeiten). I agree with you, I never went to a library to study, and tbh I don't even know what an academy is (ich weiß schon, dass er übersetzt Akademie bedeutet, aber weißt du was damit gemeint ist? Soweit ich weiß haben wir in Deutschland das ja nicht). But maybe, if you're from Bavaria, you do need to study more and actively revise.. (Sorry für den Mischmasch an Sprachen, ich bin's iwie gewöhnt auf Englisch zu schreiben ups)

I live in Greece. I am one of the good students so until this year usually studied for about 3-4 hours a day tops (I studied a lot at exams and tests). After school everyone goes to academies or take private lessons and these take up approximately 2 hours of studying a day. However all of this happened last year. This year I am a senior in highschool and I am expected to take some really difficult university entry exams at the end of the year. You have to learn whole books of history, ancient Greek and Latin by heart and I'm not even exaggerating. It's really difficult and stressful so I hope I'll go study abroad instead. Everyone, including me, has already started preparing for these exams and the new school year hasn't even started yet. I have been taking private lessons during the whole July when I'm supposed to be on summer break. I've been studying non stop everyday and my teachers expect me to revise everything I've done until now during August. I am super stressed and depressed and sometimes and I can see my classmates going through a tough time as well.. The worst part is that you're expected to choose what you're supposed to study and do for the rest of your life at the age of 17. The educational system here sucks as much as the Korean one and I'd be lying if I said I am not afraid of this year. I wish I lived in another country where students didn't rely their lives on passing exams and studying things that they'll never need in their future lives (like come on, ancient Greek and Latin is completely useless nowadays). I'm sorry for ranting but I needed to let this out :)

While I was reading this comment I found so many similarities between your and my experiences. Funfact I live in Hungary. Except that we don't have ancient language classes here (I don't miss them xd) at my school we have exams all-the-time every end of the year, and if I get a bad grade then I'm concerned as a a bad person. The school leaving exam is taken so seriously that teachers scare the kids with it like 7 years before their senior year xd In total I don't say that my case is even a little as difficult as yours as I guess you are a lot more overburdened... But if it counts I was learning during the whole summer (crazyyy XD) too as I want to take a language exam this year. For you I wish good luck and less nerve and endure your last year and enjoy the end of high school! And don't let other people saying your lazy convince you that you are lazy... I don't know you and I don't know what to think but being lazy and rejecting to be overburdened is two different thing. (I also needed to let it out. School starts soon and I'm scared) Bye ^-^

And when I get home I watch 3 videos of people study (for motivation) and watch 3 random videos, then I study all my notes (9 notebooks) which takes me up to 2 hours and then do my assignments. After that it's dinner time, and while dinner I eat and I can use my phone to chat my friends.. And then I wash the dishes (if its my turn) then I go back to my room and study the subjects I have to study or memorize which takes me up to 1 hour. And then I can brush my teeth then do some more extra studying which takes me up to an hour or 30 minutes then I can use my gadget for an hour, then pray! Then I go to sleep by 12 and wake up in the morning by 5:30 am cause school starts by 7:20!!! The end!!

K.K. B. About 2-3 hours. I usually have fun on the weekends for basically the whole day though. I try to get all my homework done as early as possible (doesn’t always happen :( )

K.K. B. Thanks! Unfortunately I have about a 90 average in English because I’m not very good at it.

Idk why but videos like this motivate me. this year, I need to work hard for the university. So whenever I lose my motivation, it's helpful to watch videos like this😂

pure torture .. like WTF xD in my country we study for like 5 hours MAX per day... then its just free time and no need to study at home.

Popin exactly

Its not torture actually. even they have school for 5-6 hours. then the rest of the studying depends on them. I don't think going to academy is compulsory for everyone. And she studies more at home cuz she's serious about her studies. Not everyone needs to do that.

I wouldn't say there is a need for ANYONE to do extra studying, here you are or in Korea, but it just depends on how much you're willing to do and how well you want to do.

Damn I can barely study for 3 hours, not everyday tho only when there’s exams. I procrastinate a lot 🤷🏽♀️

this is so motivating for me. the culture is korea is COMPLETELY different from where i live (england). no one EVER studies here; school is like hell for us so why would we want to do extra work? but thank you for this, i definitely needed it.

It seems really hard but realistic. Really great video I hope I’ll find more videos like that.👍👍 As a French student, I actually realize that I didn’t study that much and that I have to stop saying " I hate school " 😂

I'm sure there are classes that you enjoy at school :) I loved my English classes and that was one reason I felt OK going through many hours of class

i am from France. Knowing that korean this much, it's quite amazing. I study like 4 hours a day and 1h/a day, when i am in school. I am now in my fourth year of law school. Same, with my cousin, they are in medical school, engineer school.

I only study when there is an exam (study night before the exam but sometimes just stock knowledge) or quizzes. It usually took 3-6 hours starting at 1 AM (much productive)... I don't study that much in exam week because I felt like I know everything and satisfied with my grades. BUT WATCHING THIS MADE ME WANT TO CHANGE MY HABITS. I really need to be more serious since I am going to college. Pressure and expectations are on since we have entrance exam for college. My siblings set the bar high for me. :(( YOU INSPIRE ME SIS. -crying Asian here

whattt!??!?! how do you do that? i calculated and i study about 8-9 hours. How do you do extracurricular activities? I do swimming for 2 hours a day except sunday, plus piano. And i HAVE to sleep at least 8 hours, or I literally cannot wake up or stay awake.

it is important that you're exercising and getting enough sleep, your mental health would seriously suffer if you did 13 hours a day (i dont know how korean students do it!)

Rachel Hong you don't HAVE to sleep 8hrs trust me. In highschool I would sleep 8-9hrs sure, but doesn't work so well in college if you want to be an A student plus have a life. I sleep around 6hrs now, have classes usually ranging from 9am-1pm. Study around 6-7hrs self study a day and get to do things like clean or go grocery shopping or watch my fav episodes. Idk whatever you like to do. Those 2 hours do make a difference.

It’s so crazy how different South Korean and US education is. I’m a pre-dental college student and I go to a pretty well-known state university. I think in high school I would only study about 4 hours a day and maybe 6-7 before midterms. Even now that I’m in college I only study more than 8 hours when there are important tests coming up.. and I’m PRE DENTAL. The way every kid in South Korea studies makes me think every single one of them is trying to become a doctor when that’s not even the reality :( - also, I think korean students really need to value their sleep. In American high schools, they always tell us that a good 8 hours of sleep before an important test is one of the best testing strategies. Also lack of sleep can negatively affect your brain and cognition in so many ways, especially as a young teenager.
