Macbook pro is like unbeatable as a laptop in terms of having that kind of battery life while being so powerful. I wish a windows ultrabook can have that kind of balance.
@IvanWX88
@IvanWX88 9 жыл бұрын
As mentioned Apple tends to sacrifice some probability for that extra battery life, thus the heavier weight. Also that Dell having more, pixels and touch to push makes it inferior in terms of battery life. But Mac os is really much better optimised for all. The only thing I would love is touch on macbook-pro. Currently using the Dell new xps 13 i7 model with little complains, mostly for school work. I am actually waiting for macbook-pro refresh but needed a laptop a month ago for my new term.

Its a triangle the more battery and performance you want the bigger the thing is going to be. I just bought a new laptop on line right now I went for the xps ($1299 verison). Cause that difference in size matters to me cause Im a student.

Ivan Seet How's the track-pad on the xps 13? Is it half as good as that of the MacBook? I'm also a student looking to get a new laptop - I want one with a very good track-pad; but I can't afford a MacBook.

david chavez I love the XPS 13 and I am planning to get one but Macbook pro is much more powerful and have 10 hours of battery life, no windows laptop out there can have that kind of power and battery life while weight under 4 pounds and under 1.5 grand, at least not to my knowledge. Some people do need that horse power(I prefer portablilty). As a person who need a new laptop, Macbook Pro is just really attractive but I want windows.

Chris Agada The trackpad is awesome imo, way better than any laptops I've used, beside Mac of course lol. Without any funky commands added by manufacturer, the Dell's trackpad is simply responsive, scrolling, zooming etc, never have any problem using it, the only time I felt it inferior was when I'm using my friends' macbook :D

Recently purchased a MacBook Pro Retina after selling a very powerful pc that I built running windows and I will be honest, once I got used to Mac I understood why so many people just don't use windows after using mac. I don't think I will ever go back to windows and if I ever did, it would be through bootcamp/parallels.

The new MacBook Pro 15 inch is going to be released in June. I would recommend that. I'm not an apple fanboy. I have the latest dell xps 15 , I've had the xps 17 and let me tell you. Heat is a big issue. The motherboard on my xps 17 got destroyed with the heat and dell refused to help me at all. I had to have it replaced my self. Dell has got good build quality but the internals aren't very well thought out. Also dell's customer service is notoriously bad.

dontrunwithscissors No there was no mod I just use the brightness buttons to turn it up or down there is nothing me preventing me for doing this there is no auto dim or anything ,also I used to own a mac pro retina and the colors look the exact same as the dell xps 13 what does make a difference though is the 4k on the dell. If im paying 1,500 dollars or more I deserve better than that low of specs and a 1600 screen. If apple lowered the price then yes it would be a ok laptop.
@idrinkbleach4394
@idrinkbleach4394 8 жыл бұрын
dontrunwithscissors first of all you have to take into consideration that the mac pro is much thicker bigger and heavier than the xps 13 explaining the better specs but it does noticably get hotter on my lap than the xps 13 second of all yes the screen has better color acuraccy but for a very expensive machine it just isn't enough at 1,600 im not saying it was good for dell to have a oversaturated screen but im not saying it was good for apple to only put in a 1,600 display you can easily see pixels and for this price it just isn't great.. I personatly prefeer windows which can be booted through mac osx but it still keeps the old os and runs like shit. The battery life on the mac is longer but dell has an external battery that is slim portable and works quite well. The mac pro is not very good at editing also I could barely run any editing software on mine if you want something for editing gaming and photoshop get a full desktop. Also I have researched the dell xps 13, dell is a very well know brand and I have heard nothing but good reviews about it. I have a dell xps 13 and It is much more of a joy to use than my mac pro 13 retina
@idrinkbleach4394
@idrinkbleach4394 8 жыл бұрын
The specs on the dell actually beat the mac and this is a fact with a i5-6200 8gb ram 256gb ssd and intel graphics 520 I was actually able to play counter-strike global offense at 1400p and war thunder and a few other games at 60fps and run photoshop and any other editing, photo design and more.l could also turn my xps 13 into a hackintosh if I really wanted to. As for screen when I said I could easily see pixels at 1,600 I meant that at 4k you cant see pixels (atleast I can't) but at 1,600p I could easily see pixels when I looked in closer. You can't say that the mac is better for editing because it's specs are lower than the dell xps 13 expesially for this size. Even if you have a decent proccesor you still only have intel iris integrated graphics 6100 which is no where near powerful enough to handle 4k video but in the end you couldn't view it anyway.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the Windows 8.1 drivers for the new Macbook. Scrolling isn't touch based, but it doesn't have that horrible click and drag issue that was present on the 2013 Macbook Air running Windows 7. I've used both the XPS 13 and rMBP 13, I couldn't get over the dynamic contrast, and poor trackpad responsiveness on the XPS. I ended up going with the Macbook Pro and I love it.
@ericdarnelljohnson1
@ericdarnelljohnson1 9 жыл бұрын
There is just no way that you've used the XPS 2015 edition and experience a poor track pad. No way! I have both and the XPS has the best track pad of any laptop. I believe that the Mac has a better track pad but it is really close. The Dell is extremely responsive and sensitive. Definitely at the top. I think your a isheep that wants to bash any PC. The Dell is a fantastic laptop. Now, if you just prefer Mac OS then there is not even a conversation. If you are impartial and are look for a good combination of hardware and software. These two are no doubt the top two period!
@tylerwatt12
@tylerwatt12 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Johnson Nope. They way I use the trackpad (index finger to left click, middle to move cursor) makes the touchpad pretty bad. I DID own this XPS 2015, check notebookreview.com forums, I gave a review on there. The problem with the trackpad is it lacks any synaptics driver and uses the bone stock Microsoft one, scrolling is cool in IE, but trying to do small movements (manipulate EQ bars in Spotify) is very frustrating. The way the trackpad functions is very important to me as I never ever use a mouse. My top 2 trackpads are: any Apple trackpad, and Dell Precision M4800 trackpad, which is small but far more precise than the XPS 13.
@ericdarnelljohnson1
@ericdarnelljohnson1 9 жыл бұрын
The problem wasn't the track pad. It was the way you were using the track pad. Why would you click with one finger and drag with the middle finger? There are settings that can be modified that allow you to click and lock for dragging. Which would give you the ability to drag with one finger. Right clicking works like the Mac. And, you can double tap and drag. You don't even need two fingers. It doesn't have all the gestures but the sensitivity and response is top of the line. Problem with Mac users is that isheep are quick to compare and criticize because something doesn't function like a Mac. Mac OS is not perfect by any means.

***** Was there an option to disable the dynamic contrast?
@tylerwatt12

nawmean Nope, I did a LOT of research and came to the conclusion that it's probably forced on by the IGZO panel. The setting in the Intel control panel is missing, and in windows power settings, changing that setting does nothing. Tried different drivers and everything.

You have got to feel sorry for those with irrational hate for Apple refusing to buy the best laptop on the market. I've got both the xps and the macbook 2013 and after a few months or use the xps has wear on the trackpad and some keys, the 1.5 year old macbook looks brand new. The xps had heaps of scratches around the usb ports on the aluminium too, macbook has none. And just in general you can feel the thought and perfection that's gone into the macbook where as the dell is just trying to make a good initial impression. I hate to have to add this note on but it seems a requirement to avoid being labelled a isheep. I have an android phone and windows desktop because Apple don't provide options in those segments that are undeniably the best. But with laptops they do. And you're a fool if you deprive yourself of that because of some odd bias.

I know technically the Mac has a superior processor, but I have the Dell XPS 13 (i7 model, the pricing in the uk made it not too much more for a bigger SSD and the upgrade) but when using it for normal use (I do Web development at uni which means I use the typical programs and stuff like Flash as well) I have never had it lag out or run slow. The performance of it really does surprise me, had PS open as well as chrome, steam and skype and CS:GO still ran at a pretty solid frame rate. All this is really impressive since I am used to my desktop which is obviously quite a bit more powerful. If you aren't insanely heavy in use and not doing loads of video editing I really don't see the CPU power difference being too much since they are both powerful enough for most users. (Please no comments about using windows for Web dev, some people can't get it into their head that people prefer different a OS) Also the bezels on this thing are beautiful, especially with the 3200x1800 res display, it really is an amazing machine except for the fans that can get a BIT too loud sometimes.

Generally the first number indicates the generation and the second indicates the performance, but actually, in this case, the higher number does win out. The HD5500 is NOT more powerful than the iris 6100. The HD5500 isn't an iris series technology. They're confusingly similarly named but they're a separate series. Anything iris tops a HD series GPU.

+Shaibah This is like the argument of every ignorant mac user since like forever. The Dell does not have lower quality components than the Mac, it has a better screen, better CPU and better SSD. The only thing the macbook has going for it is better graphics and aluminium unibody design, but the Dell has a carbon fibre body which is also very durable. Also contrary to what some mac users like to say, Mac OS does slow down after using it for a year or so.

Great comparison, I think I'm swing towards the rMBP for the increased. Got a quick question: I'm into video editing do you think it is worth me upgrading to 16GB of ram for adobe cc or will it not make much of a difference, also what do you think of the 2.9GHz vs the 2.7GHz processor is that worth the upgrade? Trying to decide if its worth the extra cash or not. Or should I be looking at the XPS 15 / other laptops around £1400

I would increase the processor to an i7 and leave the 128gb SSD just get an external storage. 8gb should be more than enough right now, but if you want it to last and have no problems 5 years in the future 16gb is the way to go for ram. For a Mac you get what you pay for so i would go all out if you got the money

I have a question Lisa. I found two deals on both these laptops: I am able to find the new 2015 model MPR for ~$1000 (i5 Broadwell, 128gb ssd) vs getting the XPS 13 (1080p Matte, i5, 256gb ssd) for ~$900, which do you think is the better deal? I'm generally a windows user but believe I can become accustomed to Mac OS fairly easily. Thank you :)

I was choosing between these two and HP Spectre 360 and in the end I went (again) with MBP Pro. Two main reasons: outstanding vs. mediocre trackpad in PCs. Trackpad is how I interact with my machine and it as to be absolutely perfect. Dell's and HP's just isn't there yet, not by a long shot. The second reason is OS. While Win10 might be great, current iterations still suck and slow down with age, while OS X is as fast on the day you buy it as 2 years later, no viruses, malware, spyware or bloatware to worry about, no annoying updates etc. Granted, Windows may retain the speed and remain malware free if you never go online and download stuff but I have to do that.

I'll also never, ever buy a Dell again. I spent €1200 on an XPS M1330 in 2007 when I was a student, and the motherboard started melting after 6 months already. They replaced it 3 times until the warranty ran out after a year, and then they stopped caring. I wasn't even gaming. A machine that experiences the exact same flaw 3 times in a calendar year should be recalled, not ignored. On the other hand, I've had a MacBook Pro since 2011 that still runs flawlessly, even for relatively heavy sound synthesis work. A bit slower now of course, but still doing itself proud. So I would happily buy Apple again and again.

Hi there, Lisa! Have been watching several of your videos over the past few days, since I am going to buy a new ultrabook. I've always used Windows in my life, however recent Apple fanboys have got me doubting, hehe. Basically what I am asking is: which one would you recommend? I've done the basic research and I am doubting between the rMBP 13" or the FHD+ XPS 13, not the touch version due to it using way more power (or is the difference in terms of sharpness/eye-candy on the screen higher than I think?). Price difference in my country (the Netherlands) is about 400 Euros. Which of the two would be more future proof? How much better is the Retina over the FHD+? How much faster is the Mac over de Dell? Would love to hear from you!

I'm wondering why you don't recommend an i7 over the i5. Is this for the 'average user' ? I'd imagine that 'Pro users' who are editing video or doing graphic design would want an i7 to take advantage of the quad core [vs dual core i5]. I'm looking for a new laptop so I'm thinking about this a lot lately. Some insight would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks for the thorough breakdown!

I had a Windows 8 laptop with a touchscreen and hardly ever used it. I can see Apples reluctance to offer one as valid. The problem is with a laptop with a fixed keyboard is its not ergonomic to reach over to keep manipulating the screen. Your arm gets tired quickly. The screen also gets covered in grease and they also use more power.

I'm looking to buy a laptop for school. They recommended me NOT to get a MacBook because there is less support for it; particularly the engineering community at the university I'm attending. I was almost completely set on getting a the new 2015 MacBook pro but I noticed you said something about the drivers not being compatible whilst running windows. That worries me but if it is possible, I will try to make it work. Other than that, I feel there are a lot of options as far as ultrabooks go but they can get confusing and have a lot of mixed reviews. Some people like them others hate them, and there is constant bickering on which one is the best buy.

+Erik Jimenez Lol I'm in engineering and notably a lot of people, including me, use a MacBook (I own an Air, more opt for the Pro though but unfortunately I can't afford it). It actually surprised me that in pretty much every classroom I'm in, someone would be using a MacBook Pro (had a Physics lab class of ~20 people, 5 out of 5 people who brought laptops were all using different variations of a MacBook). It's prolly because nowadays there are Mac-compatible versions of programs needed for engineering, and if there isn't a Mac-compatible version out and you don't like Bootcamping, there's always Parallels/VirtualBox to save the day. I think everyone else I know who's in engineering uses Windows laptops just prefer them because you can game heavily in a Windows laptop (you know the stereotype, a lot of my guy friends actually fell in love with the new MacBook because of that size and force touch trackpad, but still opt for Windows because of gaming), and because they're more affordable.
