Dry fly fishing with a decent mayfly pattern can be deadly at the right time of the year and although this was filmed right at the start of mayfly season the fish were already well acquainted with the feast which awaited them.

Enjoyed this Rich thanks. I have not done much fishing in my life only a little course fishing mostly on still waters using a feeder rod and a float rod. Never tried fly fishing and never caught a trout though I have caught Perch, roach, tench bream, minnow, stickleback, gudgeon chub dace carp pike and eel. Not fished though for many years but still have some tackle. Sandy

Fly fishing is really great to take up as it is so satisfying to fool a fish into taking an artificial fly. I used to tie all my own flies and that made it even better but now I just buy them as I don't get the time to tie now. I'd definitely recommend fly fishing if you're looking to fit a new hobby into your busy life.

I'm with you on the still water perspective, my friend. I love rivers & streams; love the challenge (as you'll know!). Also, I spend a reasonable amount of time reapplying leadasink on my tippet (4lb like you) and little on the Gink... I find that letting it get juuust a wee bit damp lets my flies (parachutes, mainly) sit more naturally in the water - Great video as always! Keep up the good work informing us ;)

Yes if you're fishing in the tension layer of water it's definitely best to have the fly partially 'drowning' as it is more authentic.

A great watch and listen Richard. Those brownies were pristine bless them. I am planning on a spot of chub and barbel fishing on the float tomorrow on the Wye and might do a bit of filming and maybe upload :)
@pondguru

I used to have chub and barbel in my pond but the otters got the barbel and the cormorants got the chub (and the dace, and the small bream). Luckily I got the cormorants as there is a shoot on sight policy here - sons o'bitches.

Pondguru The joys and tribulations of having fish in a pond. As much as I love nature I am not a fan of the a cormorant and am seeing more of them along the banks of the Wye and Lugg. I have yet to come across a vegetarian cormorant :)

Hey pondguru, do you do any fly fishing for coarse fish? something id like to get into. also the other day i was fishing a local overflow on my local river. i fish it regularly and i have seen the odd trout jump but the river was pounding through it had been raining very heavy and the trout were trying to clear the overflow/waterfall, iv never seen this before is it in their genes to try and get past obstacles in high/heavy water?
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like they were brownies and sea-trout heading upstream after the rise in water levels. No I haven't really fished for coarse fish with the fly although I have caught golden orfe, roach and rudd on my pond on small flies.

Getting stuck in the tree made me laugh, welcome to my world 😂 Great vid 👍
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
That happens maybe 1-2 times each session when I'm down the river but 90% of the time I gently pull and it comes out without getting stuck so I lose very few flies.

Any fish fooled into taking the fly is a great catch and to be honest it doesn't bother me if they get off since fooling them is all I'm aiming to do.

@pondguru

It's a Hardy reel which is about 30 years old now and I think the name is either a flyweight or lightweight, although it probably weighs many times more than 'lightweight' reels now, lol

@pondguru

We have no pike in the Derwent or even in the Tyne which the Derwent flows into as far as I know as they can rage hard in the Winter.

What length and weight rod and line are you using? Great vid btw
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Generally the rod I use is a 7' wt £4/5 Hardy smuggler - it must be 25+ years old now but has a great action for a 6 piece rod.

What's the best flies to have for here, av just got back into fishing and kitted meself out again after about 9 years away from it and av just got me membership for this stretch of the river, am off down this weekend as I live at Consett so only a 10 minutes drive away
@pondguru
@pondguru 3 жыл бұрын
You won't have got a membership for this stretch as it's private fishing (not DAA fishing club) but the Derwent is a great river for light fly fishing. Give me a ring any time on 07772848730 regarding flies to use, no worries.

@@pondguru I got the axwell hall membership for the stretch between lintzford and swalwell I thought it was part of that stretch but the private bit by the new houses at lintzford sorry, cheers bud I will do
@pondguru
@pondguru 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardkennedy7941 I have never fished that bit but hear that it is decent. The Derwent Angling Club has the most available parts of the Derwent all the way up to the Derwent Reservoir so it would be with looking them up to see if there are any spaces. If you joined that too you'd have most of the river to go at and a wider variety of conditions to explore.
@richardkennedy7941
@richardkennedy7941 3 жыл бұрын
@@pondguru yeah that was my first membership I tried to get but I just got an email on Monday or Tuesday saying there was no spaces available so getting put on the waiting list for next season I live at moorside si it's only a 10 minutes walk for me so I thought Al get the axwell hall one for this season to get back into the swing of things, av been going up the reservoir but the rivers are just nicer for me, av got the river map to see where I can and can't fish so going down over the weekend for a few hours but mainly to work it all out and see what I can do and where, what the stretch and runs are like, more of a recon session lol
@pondguru
@pondguru 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardkennedy7941 100% - rivers are where it's at as it involves way more variety and skill than reservoir fishing. There's way more wildlife to see down the river too.

It hasn't been made public yet so I'm amazed people can see it - it's unlisted so should only be viewable with the specific URL link, lol. I have been having a few weeks off from releasing videos (which I do every year in school summer holidays to spend as much time with family as possible) and thought I would get a few uploaded as unlisted and scheduled videos so I could release them regularly over the next few months or so.

Good to hear all is well. Great vid. They just stocked the river a few weekends back so plenty in there. alway nice to catch a few that are wild even if they aren't the biggest . I worked my way down from he spa yesterday. Had more or less the same give or take, and a couple of tree fish! Haha. Anyway enjoy the rest of the summer!

Hate it when you hook the far bank, don't mind losing a bit of tippet but losing a fly......well that hurts. And you also scare the fish away, double whammy
@pondguru

It is a real bummer. I lose very few flies which is a miracle considering some of teh places I fish but 90% of teh time the fly comes out if I gently pull the line.
