@ Trekkie 135 Not a single one of your listed composers is usually considered Classical. Debussy was Impressionism Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Paganini were Romantic Vivaldi was Baroque. It isn't a big deal. Music history is full of overlapping eras and everyone just calls old music classical anyways. Classical is a distinct style of it's own though.

If you take more than just a glance at the lyrics of most of the popular hip hop and rap songs from across the past two or three decades, you’ll find tons of examples of influence from metal, classic rock, blues, soul, funk, and other genres of music. Music itself is just one big beautiful endless cycle of inspiration and influence; the popular musicians of today grew up listening to the popular musicians of the recent past, and the influence had is undeniable, even across genres.

Im not seeing enough love in the comments for The Prodigy, especially Keith Flint. He was an amazing performer and he and Liam, Maxim and Leeroy were all a huge inspiration to me personally, and many artists and performers. It sucks to see so many influential names taken by suicide, and it shows that male suicide is still a huge problem in society these days. Rest In Peace Keith, and if anyone reading this is struggling with suicidal thoughts then please don't feel scared or ashamed to get help for yourself. Youre never alone, and the world would probably suck that bit more if you weren't here.

I miss Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin on this list. Although many people see Zeppelin as something like proto-metal. The Thing is: most people who like metal just like good music i.e. music with the use of real instruments and music that (at least for the majority of songs) has some thought behind it beyond making it catchy and marketable. That's why we can also appreciate good music that is NOT metal.

Led Zeppelin is hard rock. Hard rock was founded by bringing more blues back into rock n’ roll. Heavy metal, in turn, started developing from hard rock while moving away from the blues again. Judas Priest is generally considered being the band that kicked the last bit of blues out of heavy metal

Will Ravo Lol Im a metalhead now, but i had to work towards it since it wasnt a household genre. I would not hear it often if at all. The 1st band i ever heard that was metal was Fear Factory. Zero Signal. Thank god for Mortal Kombat. Then Slayer from South Park. 4 years roll by, my 1st time hearing Black Sabbath and Ozzy. And then at 15 i pick up Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Later i moved on to punk with the Sex Pistols and Ramones. And finally after getting reintroduced to Fear Factory, i rediscover metal, and been headbanging ever since.

Queen has its own share of metal songs IMO. Songs like Ogre Battle, Stone Cold Crazy, Brighton Rock, March Of the Black Queen, Death On Two Legs, Gimme the Prize, Princes of the Universe, I Want It All, Innuendo, and even Bohemian Rhapsody's heavy section sound quite metal to my ears.

I would argue that position is actually Beethoven's. He was the one that said, "fuck it, time to make real music," and fathered the romantic era because music from the classical period wasn't expressive enough, with all the musical rules that had to be followed and formalities that had to be made. The dude literally reinvented the symphony four times(symphonies 3,5,6,9), so much so that some composers were afraid to write symphonies after his ninth because they knew they couldn't make them as good.

He's alright as a guitarist. There's definitely better dudes and gals out there who are begging for the kind of exposure just the song Purple Rain gets. (Which is alright. It's overplayed and I get tired of hearing it.) But I'll definitely agree with you on Prince being an underrated multi-musician, and am underrated vocalist. He did record a demo and his first album entirely by himself, playing, writing, and recording- if I recall correctly.

I don’t think its bad, look at where a big majority of big bands looked for inspiration. Metallica really liked the Misfits and Samhain and funny because Glenn came from both of those bands before Danzig. I think that we should all be united in a way that we all have the same enemy, which is the mainstream media and pop music. Plus, we have Motörhead and The Plasmatics, lots of punks and metalheads love them. But that’s what I think, no need to take my essay seriously.

Is anyone else here a big fan of bluegrass and old time music? I understand that it is partly because i was raised in the boonies of North Carolina, but I've always found them more similar than they are different. Being that there is focus stringed instruments almost exclusively and both formats require solos as a part of the song (bringing jazz in on this point although the culture of jazz soloing was born from he blues which was born from bluegrass and old time music) and there are some vocal similarities where the voice is sometimes treated as a percussion instrument. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I also find flamenco quite similar to blues and, to that extent, even with hard rock and metal. It's also a guitar based music where high skilled improvised solos are part of the song, and then there's the voice, raw, potent and high.
