Great advice! As a former lottery agent, I've seen and know dozens of lottery winners; this video is spot on with the exception of help others - that's the winners choice. You're not required to share your winnings with anyone other than Uncle Sam and your state's legislature through taxes.

For everyone saying to immediately sign your ticket- that is what I thought too and what we are all told to do BUT I recently read a story about a woman who did just this but lives in a state where you have to have a trust if you want to remain anonymous which she did and which is what we are all told we should do-well apparently on her state she wasn't allowed to set up a trust BECAUSE she signed her ticket and therefore had to NOT remain anonymous-apperently she was supposed to sign the ticket in the name of the trust. So that is also something to think about. Perhaps it's NOT always a good idea to sign your ticket,not without researching the laws in the state you purchased the ticket in.

I want to add if you intend to give your children mom or dad a large sum. Open a new account in your name adding that person as a signer. Give them the checks and debit card. If you just give them a check and they deposit it they will have to pay taxes on it as income. If you do it as I described their just a signer but the can spend the gift tax free. Best of luck

I used to think that if I distributed it across several banks (you know, the FDIC's 250k insurance limit) that the money would be safe enough while I figured out an investment to put it to work. However the lottery I play has grown so much that my state does not have enough banks to cover all of that. So then I worry about having to pay multiple state's taxes on the interest. Also don't forget that the limit for cash gifts to an individual, be it family or friend, is $16,000 a year. Any more than that, and you'll have to worry about gift taxes, as if regular IRS taxation wasn't bad enough already.

If you ever win millions the first thing you should do is put at least one million in the stock market on safe, good dividend stocks, called dividend king’s or dividend aristocrats. That way you have passive income for life, can retire early, and never run out of money. These dividend kings are some of the safest stocks on the market and have paid dividends for 25-50 years or more regardless of how the stock does you will always get the dividend. Then pay off debt. Then find other safe ways to grow/keep your money. Maybe a few rental properties. Let others pay off your mortgages. Don’t go crazy with it at first, just a few properties to get your feet wet.

Number 4 is done even before the win. I honestly do this often. When I win, I’m not telling anybody, I’m going to seek for legal, financial advice. Great advice, in Australia you can remain anonymous and you can register your ticket with golden casket so if you loose the ticket you can still claim your prize, also you can buy your tickets on line so it's safe from the dog, kids etc. But other than the dream team I would keep my mouth shut. I would keep my 04 Nissan that the paint is scratched and faded, I would buy a modest house to live in as I'm sofa surfing at the moment, I need a fridge and a bed only, have the rest so I would look like I had nothing, even the house would be in a trust account and not in my name. In Australia it is lump sum except for the set for life that's 20k a month for 20years

It all depends on the amount won that dictates what I do. I wouldn’t want to change much about myself in a materialistic way as even wearing a watch that’s a couple of grand makes me uncomfortable. Instead, I’d like to think I’d save most of it, invest half the amount that I’d take out, pay off mine, my wife’s and my families depts and live off the investment profit - ideally £8-10k a month is more than enough. I’d carry on working while my wife and my parents stop immediately. I’d invest in my children’s future and education by broadening their curriculum with meaningful holidays every other term.

Kind of easy, for me. I'm an immigrant, only 8 family members, TOTAL, in the US. I'm not telling them, either & 2 of them are my adult children. I've been friends with my lawyer, for 25 years. I'd ask him for a financial legal firm recommendation, out of State. I'd ask THAT firm to assemble a financial team, out of State. Then PR for all the phone calls, letters, emails, also out of State.
