13-Year-Old Tom Daley Interviewed with Dad Ahead of Beijing Olympics (2008)

On 26 March 2008, 13-year-old diver Tom Daley was interviewed alongside his father, Rob Daley, by Andy Kerr and Charlotte Jackson. Tom Daley had just become the youngest ever men's European diving champion, winning a gold medal in Eindhoven. He spoke about how he got into diving, how he keeps calm at major competitions, some of the injuries picked up on the road to success, and his goals for the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. Some 16 years after making his Olympic debut, Tom Daley (now 30) is competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, his fifth olympic games.

I know, it's incredibly sad - but don't forget his dad lived to see him become world champion in Rome in 2009! His dad famously interrupted the press conference afterwards to tell Tom how proud he was of him and ask for a hug, and got an eyeroll (and a hug, of course) from the 15yo Tom. 😂So he did live to see his son achieve the ultimate success. That's a comfort, I think.
