Alice Lee is the 3rd youngest female to achieve IM title in history, only behind Judit Polgar and Kateryna Lagno and well ahead of many male super GMs. She has the potential to compete with top male players in the future.

Also, it is important to note that Europe is a hotbed for elo points and GM/IM norms, but Alice Lee has been playing exclusively in the USA. She could easily raise her elo rating by a lot if she started playing in Europe. Almost all of the top boy players in the USA have been doing that.
@lessormore001
@lessormore001 Жыл бұрын
And what does this prove? Kateryna Lagno was an IM even before Alice and she never played at the level of the best men. If she were now playing in tournaments for the best boys her age and placing high there, such claims would be more understandable. At her age, Hou Yifan was the world runner-up among all women and took 3rd place at the Junior World Championships in the open category. She didn't take IM either, because she won the GM title shortly after WGM, at age 14 the youngest woman ever to do it. Alice only plays with women and she's not always the best among them. That's a far away from being a top open player.
@lessormore001

@@SusanGallagher-ku8kf And did these superGMs win this title 40 years ago? I once saw a comment saying that Alice became IM faster than Kasparov, but no one added how much harder it was to get the title during Kasparov's time. It depends on what perspective you use to talk about Alice's talent. When it comes to only the best women, I agree, she has great potential to become one of them someday. But when it comes to top men, there's still a huge gap. I guess no one talks about the great chess talent of a boy who is FM at the age of 13 (because Alice has not been awarded the official IM title yet) and is not even in the top 100 of the junior rating.

I remember a few years ago listening to a BBC radio play called The Chess Girls written by Lavinia Greenlaw. It was, of course, the story of the Polgar family, the dad's obsession with teaching his daughters chess, the horrendous ways in which the Communist state tried to make this impossible and tried to limit the girls' opportunities to play (no international travel, no competitions against men...).. And the development of Judit into a truly world class player. Since then I have been curious about the differing standards in men's and women's chess. Why the difference. Are men innately better at chess? Or do women face extra obstacles that make it difficult for them to reach their potential? So... it is just great to have you cover women's games and to see how well some of the women players are developing. Alice Lee, Noryul Salimova, Vasishali and more. So the request is please more great games from great women players. As well of course as great games from great men players.

It's a combination of things. Fewer women are encouraged to play, even fewer are given access to good coaching. Heck, when I was growing up, chess coaches just refused to take on girl clients because chess was a "boy's game." Further, for big events, there's a limited number of invites available, so those get given to guys. No invites to strong competition, no strong competition.

Historically, there have always been way fewer women chess players than men players, largely due to gender restrictions and expectations. I suppose a so-called Gender Studies major could give you a multitude of "patriarchal" reasons, but regardless, the opportunities for women in chess remained relatively scarce until just the last few decades. So, women have a lot of catching up to do. How good could they actually become? Well, innumerable studies have shown that on the intelligence spectrum, males tend to occupy the most and least intelligent percentiles on the spectrum (which helps to explain why most philosophical and technological advances have been made by men, and most of the world's idiots are also men). I'm not sure a woman could ever become world champion in any time format, but I do believe that it is quite possible, as Judit Polgar herself proved, that a Top Ten list of best players could consistently contain at least one woman -- though almost certainly not at #1. Of course, I'll happily admit my error if I should ever be proven wrong.

Men are often more obsessed with a particular thing. Women, I believe, have more diverse interests. And not many parents will encourage their girls to play chess any way. Chess like many other professions require a lot of hard work and dedication. Women are simply not encouraged or are willing to do that. It has too much sacrifice.

At 7:35, I thought that Alice was going to play Bd7 with the idea of getting her Bishop to e8 to shield the f8 square from the black Queen. ...Qf6 is met by Rf3 ...Qh8 is met by R×h4 ...Qf8 would be met by Rxh4, Rg4 and finally Rg8. This Bd7 interference move seems more elegant. Or am I missing something?
@chrisdavidson8525
@chrisdavidson8525 Жыл бұрын
Well, I am no master, but to my amateur eye it looks like you are going to want to defend the passer on f7. Bd7 looks clever, but really you have to defend f7 some way, so the bishop has to find another square afterwards. White does not care about the h4 pawn as it's kind of trivial - it has to get past the g-pawn and she just doesn't have time to defend the passer on f7 and advance this pawn safely. Retreating the bishop seems smart as you can defend from a distance, Bc2-b3 (after Bd7, maybe Be8...? But the bishop seems to be doing a much better and more active job from a distance) and it has the additional benefit of watching over Qd1+, which although not necessarily a threat at all - why allow tempo moves to be played? That's one way to slow initiative. Bc2 seems (again to my amateurish mind) to be more precise.
