@@joshuaowens4797 I can only think with some road cars. You usually don't pull ignition, sure the engine stops but the engine assist the hydraulic brakes. So the Brake pedal gets stiff as the engine no longer assist you. Takes more pressure but can take way more force to actually get decent braking. You can go into your car now without ignition and pump the brakes a few times and see what I'm saying. I've been taught you can shift into neutral, engine runs but power isn't transmitted to the wheels. Manual you can clutch or shift into neutral. Automatic can force shift into neutral. There is a good reason auto-engineers put neutral between drive in case of runaway. I do apologize for any ignorance on my part.

One of the things pilot school teaches you is to practice the scenarios where something fails and run through checklists. If you have a failed engine in the air, you should practice your checklist and make it instinctual if it was to occur. There is a benefit to doing the same in a vehicle. If brakes fail, if an engine gets stuck WOT, if you have a blowout... practicing and building situations into your muscle memory could benefit you hugely in the future.

The two words that I most hate to see in car sales ads are: "INVESTMENT QUALITY". Everything changes when owning classic cars becomes part of people's investment portfolios. I prefer to go to car shows and cruise nights and be around people who love their cars and know a lot about them, rather than where people consider their cars as bragging rights and extensions of their bank accounts. It's a whole different scene and vibe.

Many years ago, I had a runaway situation on my '79 CBX (superbike in its era). I quickly shut it down - but not before passing up a police car! I do not remember what the officer's opening line was, but after I said stuck throttle, he said "prove it, and it better still be stuck." Without a hand on the throttle, I hit the started button and before I could turn the key off it was already past 6,000 rpm. The officer let me park it in a safe place, and because this was the pre-cellphone era, I had to walk to a phone booth and call the dealer for a service pick up. What caused the trouble? - small pebble had somehow bounced up into the carburetor linkage, jamming it in a mostly wide-open position. Tony is more right than wrong in his description; the owner of the car is wealthy but obviously to me has little seat time.

My friend is a driver of a cargo van. Iveco Daily the one with eight steps transmission and a powerful engine capable of pulling several tons of cargo. That was the time this year that he went all road rage on some hooligan sedan on the road. I was so scared, I removed the ignition key. Needless to say, we almost had a fight and there was a real risk for me to become a hitchhiker in the middle of nowhere. But taking the key away from a mad driver does really work, you kill the ignition and he slows down either on neutral or with the motor engaged in breaking.

He chose the Minivan to hit too. He was swerving around, realized he was going to hit something, and homed in in the biggest vehicle at the light square on. The people in the minivan never had a chance.
@averyalexander23032 жыл бұрын
So what would you have suggested that he hit? One of the smaller cars next to it in the left turn lanes so they would likely get pushed into oncoming traffic? One of the rows of cars to the right of the minivan so it would have caused several cars to get wrecked and possibly more injuries? Tough call. The mini van could have had more people in it and likely kids, but it's passengers are probably safer than the smaller cars since its larger and heavier and it wasn't as likely to get pushed into oncoming traffic as the cars in the turn lanes. But realistically all of this is a moot point because clearly there's no time to think this through in a few seconds of panic. Who knows why he chose to hit the minivan or if there even was a specific reason, probably not.
@SpecialEDy2 жыл бұрын
@@averyalexander2303 I'm not saying it was a poor decision, Im only pointing out that he made a decision, conscious or not. It makes a big difference in liability. Theres some excellent discussions on this subject for the morality and legality of self driving cars. They'll need to be preprogrammed on these decisions. Do I plow into the motorcycle to the left of me or the right of me to avoid an accident? The motorcyclist on the left is wearing a helmet but the one on the right isnt, so do I punish the motorcyclist on the left for being responsible and having a helmet, theyre more likely to survive, or do I hit the careless motorcyclist on the right who isnt wearing a helmet. Or, do I plow into the minivan in front of me? Theyre most likely to survive between them and the motorcycle options, but the minivan in front of me is significantly riskier for the occupants of the self driving car than the motorcycles. AI has to be programmed to prioritize people lives and safety, and make risk assessments.

There was a car in front of me, so I swerved around it and the car behind me plowed into it. There was a young man and his girlfriend that were doing things they shouldn't have. One thing that irritated me, was he talked about his injuries and the driver's injuries, but barely mentioned the people they hit. To me, that would be the biggest thing to be concerned about. I thought I was the only one who thought all that when I watched it. I've heard SO MANY stories of other cars that had a "stuck throttle".... and yet all of these idiots just keep tooling down the freeway on the phone with 911. NO ONE ever thinks to turn the damn key off! Or the start button. Or shift into neutral if it's a newer push-button car that won't let you turn ignition off while moving. There's always a way. A better way than holding down the brake pedal (which does nothing after brake fade sets in)... and just letting the car take you on a trip. Lol

So he boils his brake fluid, does not try to use park or emergency brake or turn off the ignition and downshift. Spot on Tony!
@zrxdoug2 жыл бұрын
"Boiled his brake fluid" is a conjecture on UT's part..dude may have just used up what was left of his pads (sounds like he was familiar with the "stuck throttle, ride the brake" life), or glazed 'em so badly that they didn't have the friction to hold back the mass of the car any more..or maybe he even got a caliper so hot a brake hose failed. He DID try to "use Park" which one would assume sent his parking pawl to parking pawl heaven a millisecond or so later..as for "emergency brake," that's sort of a misnomer..it's a parking brake. The car would have likely driven right through it, since in most cases, it's just a redundant mechanical usage of the same rear shoes he's already faded into oblivion. UT nailed it..ignition off, downshift, keep pumping the brakes, and hope one of 'em isn't smoked..

@@greatnortherntroll6841 Living up to your moniker I see. And you are completely wrong. If he had cut the ignition the parking/emergency brake would have significantly slowed the vehicle perhaps even stopped it on time. And even if they were the same as the service shoes or pads the mechanical linkage would have applied pressure which the hydraulic system could not due to the fluid having boiled and become a gas.
