It iis saturday night, and I just spent 10 minutes watching a big piece of steel get very slowly squashed by other big bits of steel. I have no regrets.

For those of you not familiar with this process it is known as the Mc Qrish V-Plane Process. It is a tedious uneventful procedure to watch. Parametrically there is imbalance between y-function and x-function pertaining to space sequencing. However the differential sequence has shown to make up for those loses. The final result more than amplifies the net energy thermodynamic conservation factor by more than 10. In other words this is how they make some types of beer cans!

This is an example of open-die forging. They are taking a piece of square or rectangular reheated steel billet and making a round shaft from it with the press and the manipulator that spins it around for multiple pressed hit by the forging press. I'm a design engineer and Ive worked to design and fabricate some machine tools but it was nothing close to this big.

MrMarkpark It is likely heated, via inductive high current generation with the holding clamps in the back. They keep constant ultra-high current induced around the part making it heat uniformly. I use the same process for heating carbon fiber mandrels for prepreg carbon fiber.

What are they going to do with that big piece of metal and how is it staying hot

Not sure what they're making, but as for your second question, that thing will stay hot for days. This is a huge bit of metal we're talking about - ages to heat up, ages to cool down.

I believe it's for a rotor in a nuclear plant. it's staying hot because it's not staying hot. it is cooling. but the sheer mass of the object that has been raised to that temperature is keeping it hot... but it is cooling. It's just going to take a very long time to cool. The cooling surface is actually coming off in the form of slag as it's turned and pounded. I bet you could vaporize several thousand gallons of water on it. Hmmm I wonder if they could recoup some of the power used to make it by capturing steam off cooling it? Interesting.

That thing pressing it is deforming the metal. Deformation at this size means a lot of heat. Also as the others mentioned it has large amount of mass to hold the heat inside.

Is there some induction process keeping it hot? I am intrigued by all of this.

+TheRjjrjjr I've wondered the same thing! How is it staying red hot?! That's seriously hot, and it doesn't seem to be dissipating.

+charlietow Thermal inertia, is how. Takes a long time to lose millions of Joules of energy to the atmosphere and the press dies.

It likely spent 2-3 days in a re-heat furnace after it was cast as a billet and then cooled. Its g not getting cooled anytime during the forging process. After they finished it was likely slowly cooled in a tempering furnace to control the cooling process before it was machined to final specifications.
