I just need to put this for everyone to know - I am not scared of Mr. LPL's skills in dealing with locks. I am terrified of his skills in keeping track of each and every lock ever featured here and referring to them accordingly as needed. There, I feel better now. Thank you.

I'm not terrified at all. I have nothing but respect for his artistry. There are the 99.99% of lock pickers who have picked out locks and cleared the box/trunk/safe/house/etc of its contents. And there is the LPL. He becomes the lock. And like every lock that is locked, there's an inner voice that begs to be opened.

I think the urethane mallet is so that he doesn't damage the exterior, if you use a metal one it would scratch and scuff. He prides himself on non-destructive entry with locks, so it was like it was never picked at all (if you can call this picking) There might be another reason tho, I'm no expert

I don't think it's a matter of shame. I believe it's a matter of lack of awareness and poor management. It's frequently difficult to raise awareness of an issue far enough up the management chain to someone who cares. Alice Sales may watch LPL videos and know it's garbage. She tells Bob Manager, and he's is like "Yeah, looks not so good. I'll pass it up." Maybe he remembers to, maybe he doesn't care enough to, whatever. Maybe Chuck Executive would care, but he's not aware of the problem because he doesn't watch YT videos. There's plenty of points of failure for a faulty product to hit the market. Or perhaps it's just greedy consumerism, where as long as it doesn't directly kill people, they'll sell it if it "looks cool".

As long as they use a plunger solenoid to open the padlock, you will be able to release the shackle with a well placed hammer blow. They need a motor with gearbox (an endless screw works too) to prevent the side opening. A bigger plunger with a bigger spring can't be activated by such small batteries. Nice video, thanks...

I had a lock similar to this in middle school that had an IR remote. It was for my PE locker so…the remote broke the second week of school. Not wanting to tell my parents because I had to beg them for the lock and they knew it was a bad idea, I used a similar maneuver with my shoe heel for the rest of the year. It was honestly more convenient than the remote because the remote caused it to beep and there was a short delay.

Nah if they cared about what people thought or even about making a good product they would have put the time and effort into researching lock design and making a better one. This sort of tension/lever/spring mechanism to retain the shackle is an obvious flaw they should have spotted with about 10 minutes of research or 5 of just thinking about a lock from an engineering perspective

These videos showing LPL opening locks with the mallet remind me of when my Youngest Brother was in Welding Class in High School. The Teacher was "supposed" to have had years of Welding experience on Pipelines, metal Fabrication, etc before She started teaching High School Welding. Anyway, She was showing the Class how to build a Pipe Gate and when She finished Welding, She told the Class that her welds were "Rock Solid" and couldn't be broken. My Brother's Best Friend said "HAND ME MY HAMMER!" and then leaned against the gate while waiting. The welds on the gate broke just from him leaning against it without ever hitting it! The so-called "Professional Welder" Teacher was totally embarrassed....I wonder if that's how these Lock Makers feel when the LPL takes their Locks out for a "test drive", LOL!

What would be interesting to see in one of these electronic padlocks is a mechanism that requires two solenoids to be energized at once, but with opposite polarity to each other and in opposite directions. For example, the locking mechanism could have two moving parts: the locking lug that holds the shackle closed, and a bar that prevents the locking lug from moving. The locking lug would be removed by a solenoid that pulls it out of the latch in the shackle, and the bar would be pivoted out of the way by an adjacent solenoid that pulls it back in the direction of the shackle. The bar one would have to be energized first, of course, but the control computer could be programmed to do that fairly easily. If I'm imagining it correctly, using a mallet or large magnet to open the lock would be, if not necessarily impossible, at least far more difficult than simply tapping it once.

@@ironboy3245 The sheer absence of effort makes me wonder whether they are feeling a financial squeeze of some sort. Rebranding ODM stuff happens all over the place(including much further upmarket); but usually there is some amount of 'badge engineering' that goes into it. Here they seem to have gone with the utterly generic black model, without even a silkscreened logo; which would be the absolute lowest cost/lowest minimum order quantity commitment way to buy. Their prior model probably wasn't exclusive to them; but trimmings like the color and detail on the little pull tab and the color of the plastic part the fingerprint sensor was located in do look like they went for a slightly custom run (no changes to design or tooling; but potentially a distinct round of injection molding for their plastics and a different ribbon material); while this one appears to have absolutely zero modifications from the base product, not even really cheap ones like silkscreening or logo stickers.

Thus lock is what you use to keep the honor box in the office closed so someone doesn't lift candy... Orcthe coins that bought them when they were hungry and out of change. lol This reminds me of the "good old days" when the "honor box" news paper boxes (the kind by post office, etc. from which you buy papers) had a thumb lever you used to open the box. You put your quarters in, the lock opened, you lifted the case and took (on you honor) *one* news paper.. We were "enterprising" young boys (a buddy and I) who would take several, not all, we had some sense of conscience and would sell the papers on the corner down town so we had a couple of bucks to get by on. But, I digress... Those old style boxes were around for a looong time. Problem was, they had one flaw. If you held up on the thumb grip and gave the side a sharp wrap with your hand "Ala Fonzy," the box would just pop right open. It was an honor system, anyway so they weren't too worried about the occasional "Happy days" fan lifting a paper. Eventually, as the paper boxes were superceded by more modern boxes, my days of "free enterprise" were over. 😆
