A reason we might be more likely to get some extra beefy locks in Australia is there are a lot of remote places here with expensive infrastructure. Companies have things out in the middle of the bush all over the country and powered surveillance isn't always easy to do. Something that can hold off a grinder attack is probably more appealing if you are far enough from people that no one can hear the grinder. It's common to see locks inside steel box protection for that reason. Gates often have their padlocks hidden inside a steel tube that you have to reach into to open the lock.

When you say you'd need an angle grinder to destructively open this, what's actually to stop someone drilling out the screw holding the plate at the bottom and just dropping out the core, and then reaching in and unlocking the lugs with something like a flathead screwdriver? Or would that not work?

The material of the lock is likely hardened steel(As it usually is with these heavyweight padlocks), which makes it *very* difficult to approach like this. And to reach the screw with a drill to the point of dropping it would need several bits.

This model padlock, others in the Abus range and similar products from other manufacturers cater to the inline restricted system profiles that are commonly used by Locksmiths for commercial clients. Many of the restricted profiles we use are usually very paracentric and are extremely difficult to get a pick into. This video primarily shows how easy the standard Lockwood profile is to pick, but I'd like to see LPL pick this lock with a cylinder keyed to one of our restricted profiles next. Great video! 👍

They also made a whole range of other household items (wheelbarrows, ladders, etc under the brand names "Kelso" and "Ogden"). My Dad bought a seconds wheelbarrow from the factory when I was about 5 (I'm now 59) and still have the wheelbarrow with its original wheel and tub. Also have a number of Lockwood padlocks that are at least 40 years old, with the same design as today.

Got two of those ABUS on a shed. With the area it's located I'm not too worried about someone picking it, though it seemed reasonably resistant anyway. Given how solid they are someone is more likely to grind a hole through the corrugated iron on the walls before they attack the lock I think!

LPL, I work on Financial equipment for banks all across the US. I'm glad to see you got ahold of some ABUS locks. But there's one in particular that I came across in the field at a medium sized bank in Alabama... I wish I remember what the model of the lock was, but I remember for certain that it was ABUS, and that this padlock was HUGE. I'm talking 4 maybe 5 inches tall, 3 or 4 inches wide, 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Padlock style very similar to this, just bigger. And. It's. Heavy. 5+ lbs at least. The key had two sets of teeth, one at the top of the key like normal keys, a different set of teeth in the groove of the key, and little concave "dots" on the side of the key... If I recall correctly, the shackle was protected like this lock, but the Shackle does not come out of the lock like this one did, after being unlocked. Could you potentially try to find this lock? The heft of the lock, and the design of the key gives the impression that this lock means business (and considering what was on the other side of the padlock, I'd like to think it was in fact a seriously strong lock). I've scoured Abus' website many times try to find it, even going as far as to search 20+ pages of Google image results for "Huge ABUS lock".

Speaking of Australian locks. Place I worked has Galaxy locks by The Australian Lock Company, same people that make the BiLock in video 1177. The Galaxy locks are kinda cool, they "look" high security and I wouldn't have a clue where to start picking them. Can be keyed differently to give varying levels of access to rooms etc.

This looks sure looks good on the inside as the outside. The anti-drill protection is something I would really want in a lock that I put on a garage shutter. I wonder if there are any other improvements that they can do to help protect against tumble pickers. Still looks mighty impressive.

In Australia this lock and similar ones are often used inside of lock guards. It makes it a pain to pick when you only have room to get a key in with one hand. Trying to get a drill inside the lock guard and hold it steady at the same time is a hard thing to do. Have seen some locks with a snapped drill bit stuck in them. Then they try to take an angle grinder to the lock guard. Usually security comes around and interrupts them before they get to far.

LockPickingLawyer, how do you feel the difference between a set pin and a binding pin?
@3rdalbum
@3rdalbum 3 жыл бұрын
A binding one is, well, binding. Difficult to move. When a pin is set, it goes somewhat loose and springy. It feels different to a pin that hasn't been set. Difficult to explain it, it just feels different when you push on it.
@dietertubeyou
@dietertubeyou 3 жыл бұрын
@@3rdalbum You´re right. I think the set pin has some play between core and the housing and the spring pushes the housing pin to the core. This play is different from an unset "hard" pin.
