His offense with his hands had wing chun elements for sure, that's why it was so ineffective. His defense was mostly distance management and turtling up, no wing chun there - because cool-looking wing chun blocks usually don't work. WT guy did try to use the elbow block (bong sau) from time to time, but you're supposed to only use it reactively as a sort of counter-strike, not just holding it up as a passive barrier. He did try to use the only kick in wing chun, that front push kick - again, largely ineffective. The rest of the kicks were karate. The winning move was a sloppy rear naked choke that worked because the opponent was gassed out. The WT guy won because he had a good chin and better cardio. Source: I spent a few years doing wing chun. The best I can say about it is that some elements work sometimes. I had a good coach who tried to make WT work - the more he did that, the more it looked like boxing. There are some benefits though - many WT schools (at least where I live) will have a lot of physical exercise to fill up time and make students feel like they are advancing, and combined with the lack of sparring, they are generally okay to stay in shape and not get injured, as far as one is aware that WT doesn't work as advertised.

For a guy that was 5’8 140 pounds he hit me harder than most heavyweights have with punches I couldn’t see coming with the lights on. It’s truly a formidable art. This guy in the video may know some wing chin but to say he’s a master is a long stretch.

The secret is … there’s only ONE true lineage with the REAL wing chun. That’s the IPMAN> Duncan Leung School. All the rest are bullshido. The biggest problem to learn wingchun? It takes atleast 5 years of HARD training to even get to the level where you can fight with it. It’s a very deep system.

He's probably taken a few classes, but a master he is not. He does a lot of things wrong, and he doesn't maintain the stance at all, which makes me suspect that he may be self taught from watching movies or something. I don't recall Wing Chun doing round house kicks. My sister did Wing Chun for a while, she got lightning fast and pretty strong. Very impressive. I'd notice how effective the system was when she would show me the "sticky hands" and pull me straight into a punch, my whole body fell forward from a slight pull.

@johndough8115 Жыл бұрын
He wouldnt need head movement... if he had used WCs Interception Tech. Because he clearly doenst know any depth at all about WC... he had no displayed Interception skills.. and so it was easy for the OP to get close enough for a potential hit to his head. If you stop the attackers attack at their forearms... then they lack the range to reach your head. You then apply trapping skills, to trap the OPs backhand, and are then free to use whatever strikes you wish... and the OP wont be able to defend against them. There is a lot more to it than that... of course. Furthermore... there is good reasons why WC, and many other traditional combat arts do not use Head Movement. To move the head, actually means, to bend the spine drastically. When you bend the spine, you change your center of gravity... as well as potentially create other problems. If an OP tries to Duck under one of my incoming strikes.. I then drop a Vertical attack downwards, on top of their Spine (Neck). Or at minimal.. use one arm to hold their head down... preventing them from standing upright... followed by something like a knee to the head. If the OP tries to do a back-bend away... you take a deep-step between their legs, faster than they can back-peddle. You could either strike them, or push them backwards, causing their already off-balanced structure, to easily and quickly topple over. Also, if they are learning forwards, or to the side.. you can either pull them off of their heels forwards... causing a face-plant. Or you can push they further to the side, again... causing them to come up off of their feet.. potentially falling to the ground. But Far more important that that... is the fact that no matter how fast you think you can move your body... there is no way for your body to move faster than a near mass-less, Limb. The only reason that you see it often working in boxing.. is because they are throwing their strikes from way too far of a distance. The OP can "READ" you as you start to throw.. and have already started to move their bodies. However, at closer ranges... that is no longer possible. Especially if you throw your strikes without being "Telegraphic" (no shoulder / body turning), that would be easily "Read". The trouble with that... is that most beginners / clueless amateurs cant figure out how to get close enough, in order to be able to actually Apply these short-range methods. This is where advanced methods come into play. Mostly off of the interceptions + counters. Furthermore... if you have not mastered your defensive techs... then you are likely going to fail to be able to deal with the OPs long-range attacks... and end up eating a KO. However.. when your defensive methods are executed properly.. the OP will eventually get Frustrated that they cant land a single hit on you... so they will then try getting closer before throwing a punch. And thats not even counting how you can cause the OP to react to one of your fake punches... and then trap their arms off of the interception that you basically "Created". And finally... having his hands way too close to his body... is a HUGE NO-NO. He will lose all Mechanical Leverage, and the OP can easily bypass his defenses from all different angles. The further your arms are away from your body... they harder it is for the Op to get close.. and to be able to physically reach you. You can easily test this yourself, by using two wooden poles, or fake-swords. When you have your sword in your hands... which do you feel more safe with? By pulling the sword as close to your body as possible... OR... by extending the swords as far out in front of you, as possible? Test your defensive abilities from both range / positions.. (at slow speed, and softly, to prevent injury). In WC.. you use your extended arm, very similar to how you FENCE with an actual sword. It gives you safety in distance, more time to React, sensitivity in being able to read the OPs intent Tactile feedback, and superior defenses through Angles and superior Leverage. Now, there are always certain exceptions to the rules. If there is a heavy haymaker on the way, and I missed the chance to sidestep... then I can use the Opposite-Side palm, to slap-block the inside of their forearm. This is strengthened by turning your body to face diagonally towards the OPs attack... And by putting your mass over the rear legs hip, with the postlegs knee being bent deep.. to act as a shock absorber. (There is a same side alternative, but its nowhere near as strong) Make sure to leave a very small bend in the elbow... to also help absorb shock... as if you locked your arm fully out, it would both lift you off your heels... as well as potentially damaging your elbow joint. You also perform this (and all other WC moves) with soft spring energy... rather than Hard-Stiff energy. This is what gives you the ability to absorb, and redirect, without suffering issues from heavy impact forces. Like a strong Tree.. that bends in the wind.. without breaking (or more closely related to a "Bow", or Spring)

Yeah, if you like Telegraphing your strikes.. and being Counter struck or Grappled >_< . Hes clumsy, because hes a clueless Noob, that has demonstrated ZERO WC interception skills (the core of WC). He gets tangled, because without intentionally guiding the OPs limbs.. he gets caught between them. He also lacks "Root", so is easily pushed / moved around. As for speed.. you dont need to be fast to be effective. You just need to operate properly, and effectively. He would have been easily steamrolled, pit against a better fighter.

@@dannysmuzic1807 I mean, maybe if the opponent is embarrassingly unskilled, but WC has no defense, so tryin to win a street fight w/ them weak jabs, no head movement, no guard, is liable to get them taken out by even a wild hook from an untrained brawler. I've seen it happen time & time again. This guy jst has some degree of natural talent & a chin, but it wasn't WC that got him the W, in fact it almost got him taken out by a guy w/ far less talent. Just a terrible combat system, a waste of time, & a waste of potential.
@dannysmuzic18079 ай бұрын
@@ubahfly5409 I disagree. WC was the only discipline displayed in this match. My comments have only been about and within the context of this match. Your comments have been broader and wildly flailing, just like the street brawler who lost the fight here. If you want to go broader and continue to reframe the topic I started on this thread, into something I never meant, which somehow validates your point, I can go there briefly. WC was a good enough base for Bruce Lee, so it's good enough for me, or at least the chap in this video, who won. Any other "wild flailings" and I will have to choose not to respond. Thanks

@@dannysmuzic1807 Clearly you can't engage w/ my arguments on their own merits. U're not fooling anyone by placing arbitrary restrictions on what can & cannot be discussed. U should be perfectly capable of refuting my points w/ out hiding behind claims of "reframing", like this is some formal debate. Fighting is fighting. Unlike your statements, mine don't rely on carefully restricted "framing". They remain true whether or not you "feel" their discussion violates these imaginary rules you just made up. I thought you could handle an adult discussion but I have no interest talking w/ a clueless traditional MA fanboy who lives in fantasy world, so it's no skin off my back that u'd choose a cowardly retreat. So be it.

This 'void control' you're talking about is actually one of the first principles of wing chun which is (in a few words) that you should occupy the shortest path to your opponent.

Wing Chun is always fascinating to watch for me. The footwork, defense, and timing look super wonky to me. But some of his strikes were pretty crisp and it's interesting to see things like back fists.

As someone that started doing WC when I was 16 (Im now 50), I can tell you that there was no WC in here... other than some "Static" hand poses. WC operates on Interception technology.. and he basically had Zero intentional interceptions and no arm-trapping tech, going on here. Its hard to find someone clips of people that know what they heck they are doing... because such people do not want a long line of psychopaths, at their doorsteps, wanting to "Test" them (myself included). At best, you might be lucky enough to spot decent drills that show how things operate.. but almost never, will you see heavy force + realistic level of application, being shown. Also, this dude had no power in his strikes. I used to KO fighters, from my mostly extended lead guard hand. Less than 6 inches of travel distance.. with a short range vertical fist to their foreheads. I never needed more than about 15% of what I was capable of generating, to accomplish this. So when you see fools chaining any more than 2 punches together... Realize that they are clueless Noobs, that never developed Internal-Power (the Root of WCs power, and most all Chinese combat arts).

Finally a Wing Chun fighter that is actually practicing his art. I got some Wing Chun training for about a year (sadly, had to leave the city), and we regularly sparred. I assumed that was the norm until I started watching KZbin and seeing all these fights with Wing Chun "masters" that crumble after a single hit.

As a side thought, when I consider fighters like Nate Diaz, who was far from being one of the greatest fighters of all time and is now slurring every word presumably due to head shots over time, then I listen to Mighty Mouse, who is arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time and is now speaking with the clarity and diction of a public speaker, it makes me clearly see the downside of a brawler style of fighting and the upside of a grappling style of fighting

Wing Chun is a southern style, short hand, Chinese fighting system. Short, compact strikes with simultaneous blocks and strikes utilizing the “sticky hands” of the Wing Chun practitioner. Very few kicks, usually low to the knee and groin. This guy is a long hand practitioner, striking from distance with multiple high kicks that close the distance between fighters. Almost like a Tae Kwon Do student.

This is where a little bit more technique and precision is what gave Xiao the advantage. He knew what to do in a wider range of situations aswell. When his kick was grabbed he escaped and recovered quickly. The more he gets used to full contact and speed the better he'll become.
