The university I transferred to did not accept all my classes so I would have to take more gen. ed. classes, so I did get my AA degree from the first university so the one I transferred to had to accept all my gen ed, classes.

This is a relatively new phenomenon in the history of student loan debt. It's only been on borrowers radar for a decade now. George Bush and his cronies at SallieMae made it impossible to get rid of this debt through bankruptcy. That's where the problem lies. Politicians, high school and university bureaucrats are scum.

I'm a stay at home mom now tending to 3 kids and the student loan people don't give a rip stitch about our circumstances. & trust me the man is telling the truth, these loans DO NOT GO AWAY. You will have them for ETERNITY. We are working hard to pay them off, but this all could have been avoided if I had a clearer understanding. There is NO excuse for ignorance. Nelley Having to pay back debt isn't the issue. Research Navient and for profit colleges and you will see the government has sold out young adults to banks. The taxpayers don't get anything from a third party company inflating the interest so much that a student paying on time who has paid what they borrowed many times over on time for over a decade can owe more than what they started with. The loan system has completely changed since 9/11 and blaming 18 year olds while turning a blind eye to the lobbyists slanting the laws even more isn't going to solve anything. They managed to get rid of the self sustainable Perkins loan program because people were able to pay off their debts. No one noticed or cared but the truth is that the government is contracting companies that actively want to keep students in debt and will do everything in their power to make sure they are never able to fully pay off any loan.
@ItzDjanelle
@ItzDjanelle 7 жыл бұрын
Karma Yup, that is all true, that is why it's best to try not take on loans in the first place, or always look at the policies and interest rates. Nelley Right we did. We also weren't expecting the 3rd child or my job to fold, or my husband to get into a terrible accident that resulted in him being out of work for 9 months with rods sticking out of every part of his body, multiple surgeries, and rehab. You think anyone who gives out a loan government or not cares about our circumstances? Nope. All I was saying is I did not do my research, so I was misinformed and misguided in trying to "help" my family situation and was commenting to those who don't have guidance either. We still paid our bills, and at times robbed Peter to pay Paul, but not once did we ever say, I took out loans, not gonna pay them. Very sorry if I gave you that impression, but it's just not who we are. Just saying it's been an unnecessary struggle.

My cousin grew up in Germany and she never had to pay for school either, and now she is a doctor married to an Italian medical school professor in Germany. I think free education is a wonderful thing because so many people in the US are in so much debt after they graduate. My sister graduated from Columbia University for her masters degree in social working and now she has a pretty decent job but she came out of Columbia with a 89k debt. I know that is nothing compared to so many others with a much higher debt.

Daniel Lim You are absolutely right. I am European. How ever I do live in US for the past 10 years so I can compare. It sure is a trade off. Taxes are higher but listen this, not by that much. It appears someone wants to scare people here with: "Yeah you want socialist Europe? Look how much they pay in taxes". Let me tell you the big secret it is NOT $80 000 over the course of 30 years which is pretty much how much people are in debt here for the things we got for free. But there is trade off. In economy there is no such a reality as something for nothing. But some things like housing, education and health care are over blown here. There is no one on earth that can explain me why it costs so much. For instance I don't think problem in US is health insurance. I think the problem is criminal prices hospitals charge!!!!!! Bring the prices down to there fair rate and insurance will go down and very fast vast majority of population WILL have health insurance....

In fact, right at this very moment one of my mother's friend came to Korea to get medical care for cancer, because it was too expensive in the US even with insurance. Isn't that ridiculous? that you have to go to a different country because the country you live in, which is one of the richest in the world, can't provide you decent medical care? So much money goes to the military and other useless sectors, while education and other social programs are sub-par compared to other developed countries.

But some people actually want to become successful in a certain field and a degree is required for that. If you want to become an electrician or carpenter (or an actor or singer), then great no degree required. But if you want to be a doctor or an engineer then you absolutely need the degree. The degree is necessary as it teaches you the methodology. The maths is a lot more complicated as a mechanical engineer, vs as a mechanic. It’s not just about money.

Private Sudent loans ARE forever. You can NOT file for bankruptcy. If you die the private student loan people will sue your estate for the balance. I got my Master Degree in teaching came out with a total of $14,882. Paid it off in 5 years. Have zero credit card debt. My ONLY debts is my house 🏠. My kids will NOT goto college AND major in basketweaving. Either a trade school for plumbing or electrician or a marketable degree like electrical engineering, nursing, etc..
@katrinaumana2127
@katrinaumana2127 9 жыл бұрын
***** No basketweaving isn't a legit major but is a place holder for History, African-American Studies, Art History, Sociology, etc... majors that aren't marketable. Petroleum Engineering is the most in demand degrees. I think Chinese or Arabic or Spanish majors could be in high demand for translation NEEDS.

Katrina Umana My husband and I signed a document stating that our loans are forgotten in the event of the student's death. I have never heard of a company coming after the estate. I've heard that on credit cards and other consumer debt, but not school loans.
@katrinaumana2127
@katrinaumana2127 8 жыл бұрын
Then you and your husband must have ONLY government loans. Those loans are in fact discharged upon your death. However, private student loans are attached forever and if you have any assessts after you die the private student loan companies will sue to get their remaining balance. Federal Loans Die With You The federal loan dies with the borrower, and it’s very simple. The surviving people (family member or estate representative) fills out a Death Discharge to officially notify the Department of Education that the borrower has passed away. You’ll usually have to send in a certified copy of the death certificate to the school (for a Federal Perkins Loan) or to the loan servicer (for a Direct Loan or FFEL Program loan). The school or servicer verifies the information and the loan goes away. It should not affect the estate. Private Student Loans Private loans are completely different because they are like any other consumer debt and attaches to the estate. I’m not an estate lawyer, so you’ll need to talk with one to determine the impact of the debt on your assets. This was taken from Joshua R.I. Cohen a student loan lawyer. I was referring to private loans.

College wasn't invented for the purpose of securing a job once you're finished. It was created to further educate rich people/people that could afford it. It's sad that the USA culture is now to go to school and get a degree without even realizing what you're doing and no idea of even what all that debt is really going to mean when you're done.
@charlesvonhabsburg3107
@charlesvonhabsburg3107 8 жыл бұрын
CodiTheJedi What college was invented for has no relevance today. In the beginning they were exclusively religious institutions. With the price of college today if you are not going to college to get a job or further your career you have no business going to college. That is the only purpose of a degree and it is the only purpose of college education. A degree is a piece of paper that says you have been educated in a certain field and you are qualified to do that job.

The best thing to do is go to a junior college and then transfer to university your last two years. I believe the whole college system and what we've been taught here in America is a scam. Why does college cost so much here in the US? I have friends from other countries that pay little to nothing to get an education. Another important thing is to choose your career wisely where you will be able to find a job and one that pays well. And sometimes a four year degree is not always necessary. There are great careers that require a 2 year certificate and pay more than careers that require a four year degree. For example, a dental hygienist, a person that assists the dentist, here in the Chicagoland area, makes a minimum starting pay of $50,000-$60,000 and it can go up to $74,000-$90,000. Not bad for just a 2 year certificate...Just be smart when choosing your career.

Students are stupid? It's the school / parents / everyone in that teenagers life pushing them to college. That loan is pitched as "financial aid" Even if you choose a practical degree: doctors, lawyers and teachers are coming out broke. It's not that the govt is stupid. They know what they are doing. They are the ones giving to the contracts to the bank. If you're mad about your tax payment don't blame the innocent student just trying to improve their lives because they were being used without their knowledge. You can't be mad if all you do is put blame on the student and ignore every time Sallie Mae breaks the law with no repercussions. We had successful loan programs that were able to be paid off (Perkins) but no one noticed when those programs disappeared in favor of a bank that randomly charges whatever interest they feel like that day. The answer isn't that we should all be less educated. The answer is that we need enough public outrage to fix the program. Either way your tax dollars are going to millionaire CEO pockets because any hot dog stand calling itself a "university" qualifies for this scam of a student aid program. It would actually be cheaper for community colleges to be free at that point but no one votes for it because you're all too unaware of how much taxpayer money is going to a bank.

Look, I have a history degree. People don't understand that history isn't reading about the past. It's a way of researching, writing, and comparative analysis. It prepared me to be in leadership at the job I'm in now...but I had to use the tools that my degree gave me and apply them in a different way. The problem with humanities degrees is the same problem that other degrees have. People think that they should get a free ticket to a career. Guess what, it ALL takes hustle. And now I'm going back to school for my masters in HR...does that mean I regret my bachelor's? NO! It made me into the person who has the insight to thrive in human resources. The problem is that people aren't willing to self study, pivot, and honor their past while pursuing their future. Student loans have made people so bitter when they aren't handed a career in a hand basket. (I know I'm commenting years after everyone else...but someone in the future might need this encouragement. Its not a shot in the foot to pursue humanities if you utilize those skills to make yourself an asset. But PLEASE cash flow...it's worth the wait to finish school with no student loan debt.)

If they can't adequately answer those questions, then I won't spend one dime on their education. I got a History degree and can teach. I went to a local university that charged me 1600 bucks per semester for most of it. I got enugh left over in grants and Texas grant. I got a teaching job, get 50,000 per year, debt free and work in the same place as people with 40k in debt that went to better universities than. Bottom line is, school counselors are idiots that brainwashed them.

The student loan program is not broke. What's broke is the rates that college are allowed to charge for tuition. I went to college about 25 year ago and it was quite doable to work some OT and go to school part time and come out debt free. It is IMPOSSIBLE to do this today. I found one of my old college catalogs the other day and it was $100 a credit. The cost needs to go down! It's that simple.

So true. My father-in-law got his law degree for about $30,000 and started out making $55,000 a year. 40 years later & the same school now costs around $150,000 for a law degree and lawyers start out making around $60,000 a year here. It's ridiculous!

Totally agree. As an immigrant from the UK I am forced to make some general observations. The hype is so high in the US that people are brainwashed into believing that 'you can be anything you want to be', but you need to go to college! Basic economics lessons ought to be a mandatory part of high school education, however, I feel that some politician some where would flag this as 'UnAmerican' and not conforming, or contributing, to the consumer society!

The only reasons to ever go out of state for college is A) you have a very specialized degree you can't get in your state, you have completed gen ed courses at a community college, and have saved or budgeted to pay for this school. Or B) you are an athlete (most likely)with a full ride or at least a full books and tuition scholarship.

@@Khaltazar You are wrong. Some school actually do have limited enrollment for certain majors. Yours probablt wasn't full. Most nursing schools only take a limited amount of students per graduation semester/year. If you don't make the entry you register as undecided so that you can continue taking classes and try to get into the program when it opens. Also this happens with ABET accr schools as well. Some majors get full and you have to register as undecided.

Community college is so great. In CA i was able to pay for it myself with a part time minimum wage job (lived with parents of course). It also gives students time to think about what sort of career path they want/is practical without paying much or sinking deep into debt. Furthermore, I think the instructors are more passionate about providing quality education that many university professors are. That's my opinion anyway.

The problem wasn't with her parents. The problem was with her ex-husband. She and her husband wanted to have 3 kids while she was going to college? UNBELIEVABLE! Why did Dave blame it on her parents? GMAFB ! With a degree in history you can be an educator, researcher, communicator or editor, information manager, advocate, or even a businessperson. Among the jobs you can consider are: advertising executive, analyst, archivist, broadcaster, campaign worker, consultant, congressional aide, editor, foreign service officer, foundation staffer, information specialist, intelligence agent, journalist, legal assistant, lobbyist, personnel manager, public relations staffer, researcher, teacher . . . the list can be almost endless. Credit card debt? GO BANKRUPT! I had a $40,000 student loan and a $60,000 credit card debt. I negotiated with the credit card company. In hindsight, I should have gone bankrupt. By being a part time continuing student, I could put off my student loan for 20 years and paid it off with inflationary dollars.

Please only accept subsidized loans (accumulates interest AFTER graduation). Try to avoid unsubsidized loans (accumulates interest Everyday and After graduation). Deduct interest from taxes. Please avoid out-of-state tuition, private student loans, and for-profit colleges like Everest and ITT Tech. Take courses at community colleges (they are legit). To get more aid, prove struggles of parents (or yourself) to financial aid office: Foreclosure, repossession, bankruptcy, debt settlements, separation, divorces, death, new child, hospitalization, unemployment, reduction in income, food stamps, failure to pay taxes, wage garnishment, incarcerations, terminal illness or condition, etc. Choose credit unions. Banks are for-profit. Do not drop out of college = Less likely to repay debts.

I know a young person who went to college and studied Computer Science and Mathematics, graduated college with a double degree and had a job within a week. About six month's later was offered a job out west in a state that had no state taxes with a 5K raise. Took the position makes close to 90K a year, student loans are something they just pay every month. Recently they were offered a part time job tutoring high school mathematics on Saturday mornings. This would pay an additional 10K a year. The right major in something that is in demand makes all the difference.
