This is a really smart way to show people what is happening rather than just describing it. I have been watching your videos for the past week while practicing and both enjoy them and have learned a lot. I just entered my second week of picking and have gotten up to an American 1106 so far which was not as hard as I was anticipating but this video really helped with what to expect from the security pins. I’m inconsistent though because even though the American has a decently low pin in the middle making it somewhat interesting, I still have problems with locks that should be easier than that one. I’m sure that watching more of your videos will help though so thank you again for all of the time and effort you took making these videos.

I find that the secret to false sets and spool pins is fine-tuning how much tension one applies -- just enough tension to lend a little resistance / friction to the pins, but no more. Also, there will be oversets, and releasing the tension just the tiniest bit to release the oversets (and then probably increasing the tension again in the next nanosecond) is a talent I'm working on. On occasion I've gotten past spool pins by mashing all the pins up as far as they go, holding them in overset position via too much tension, and then easing up so that the oversets free themselves as described above. This isn't a great technique and I've abandoned it for the most part, but I think it helped train me to handle ovesets better.
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 6 жыл бұрын
kingbeauregard have you heard of reverse picking? That sounds a little bit like your second technique it's a pretty cool technique when it works

This is a great example of picking a lock. This is also a great example of why I try not to do too much to the challenge lock pins so they dont give much of a false set. I believe spool pins can help you pick a lock. Due to their wonderful feed back.

I've been trying to find out what a false set was and nothing I read or watched made any sense until I watched this video. Thanks! I do have a question that perhaps one of your videos explains but is there a simple way of telling which direction to apply tension while picking?
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 6 жыл бұрын
You tension in the direction you want to open. Deadbolts always open away from the door frame. If you pick it the wrong way you can always use a plug spinner to fix it.

It kinda turned about 10 degrees (exactly what you showed) and I tried for about a minute to tension it open cause i thought i beat the lock. I see now what really happened lmao

If you have 4 spools and one standard, do you have to set the standard pin first to be in a false set prior to setting the spool pins? If you lose your false set, do you have to get it back again before picking the spools again?
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 2 жыл бұрын
Once you pick the standard pin the false set should present. However, some spools sit on top of tall key pins where the thinner diameter actually never comes into play

I'm stuck on a storage disk type lock (with the shackle that runs the outer circumference of the pancake style lock body) that doesn't seem to give any feedback whatsoever. I've tried raking and IPP and can't seem to get a pin to set enough to get any rotation or any false sets. I am utterly stumped. I've tried both high and low tension, and a variety of different hooks. The key pattern has a very aggressive teeth, with one set all the way up and the following as far down as that style allows I suppose. I guess I'm probably interfering with the set somehow with my hook, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 4 жыл бұрын
some of those can be tough in general and have a tough keyway. I would just put it down and come back to it in a week or so

@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks! I do feel like I’m getting a feel with the hooks and have had success with other locks, but this one is tough (Started picking two months ago). I almost bought another one from Harbor Freight just now to see if I could pick a different one (mine is from a Uhaul self storage).

Yeah, I'm pretty good at picking locks but I now have the Sparrows revolver challenge lock and it produces false sets and when I get one I stand no chance of getting out of it I either have to reset and hope I don't get it or simply fail, but there is one key position that false sets every time now and I can't figure out how to get through it. I can't seem to make my cutaway produce a false set so I can see what it's doing, so here I am, I hope this video will help me.
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 4 жыл бұрын
It might be easier if you practice on a more standard lock. It think Kwikset is a good lock to learn on
@KoolBreeze420
@KoolBreeze420 4 жыл бұрын
@@HelpfulLockPicker I have all of the Sparrows Schlage locks from 2 to 5, the cutaway. The revolver is the 1st lock that I've been able to get a false set on not sure why. I even have the pin reload kit and the master key set. On lock 3 of the revolver, it has mushroom pins and it produces a false set that I just can't seem to recover from. Sparrows don't have Kwikset type locks and the site I found them on are just too expensive when you tack on shipping. So these are the locks I have I also have a few Schlage commercial locks but the cores in the mortise locks I have, the tolerances make security pins useless they just don't fit in tight enough to make the security pins effective. The revolver is currently the only lock that I can get to create a false set but it has only been a few weeks. If I could just figure out a way to produce a false set in my cutaway it would truly help me but this video has given me an idea as to what is happening, so I'll just keep practising until I get through it.

ok well i have a new question (BTW thanks for anwering one of my other questions several days ago)... I have a standard door lock on my bedroom and both times ive managed to get it almost picked it goes into a extremely deep false set almost to the point its should be unlocked but its doesnt fully unloc.. like its 3/4 of the way there... i cant imagine it being super high security since i am pretty sure it was a cheap one from menards or even walmart.... im curious what could cause such a deep false set in a cheaper lock like this.. could it actually be trap pins? and i wonder how i would know without gutting (assuming its even possible) it to see whats inside... Id love to defeat this one now!!!

@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 5 жыл бұрын
To start off you shouldn't pick locks in use it is a bad practice. I would have to see a photo of the degree of false set but it could possibly have a t pin which could be causing it. Regardless of it being a t pin or spool it would take the same way
@razoredgechris
@razoredgechris 5 жыл бұрын
@@HelpfulLockPicker i think i can give you a mental image at least, because it was the same degree of false set on both locks.. it stopped at the 9'oclock position. And i wont do it on my front door anymore.. my bedroom door i am not as worried about since it was more about privacy than security. I did ask in a facebook grop and somoen said it could be construction keyed, but i dont think that is what i bought. Unless i did it without realizing what they were.
