A great string of hits and a new sound ushered in an extension of the great Blue Note label's lifespan!! Many cats from the hard bop era, were now recruited into making a juke box HIT for Alfred Lion and Co.!

Nice summary of the genre - and you're right, it kept the lights on for those great albums that came later. I'd love for you to dive into some of those artists, especially Andrew Hill. I always learn something new from your posts - thanks for the dedication.

Excellent video Dan....not because I like bugaloo but how you explain it. It seems like most of these bugaloo songs are almost like 3 chord fast blues type. Not my favorite but like you said I think BN tended to put at least one bug type song on many LPs. That’s what sold so I can’t fault them. Very enjoyable and........don’t respond to trolls!

As a musician I can tell you that these rather slow laid back stuff, the Blue Note boogaloo, is hard to play if you want to play it right. It took me some time to get into it, but it was worth it. People love it and it is fun to play.

i bet tracks like D Byrds Slow Drag, are even tougher..slow is always tough

The Boogaloo is loose,but Blue Note's are tighter than Prestige. This shows how much difference rehearsal time can make,even with the relatively simple structure of what is usually referred to as "soul jazz".Actually, creating a memorable solo to this material is not easy.I hope listeners have,or will,appreciate Lee Morgan's incredibly hip solo on "Sidewinder",one of the best in this genre of all time!

Some spot on comments bud. 👍 Lee's release came at a VITAL time for sure. I say this often, the BN covers(!) are a legit 33% of my appreciation & enjoyment from the label. They are art in and of itself IMO. Again, great "fill in" BN commenting we all appreciate.

This is the music that got me into jazz, mid 60s funky boogaloo. Brilliant selection of albums. Meatwave one of my favourites. Big John Patton's version of the turnaround is also killer. Great club music. Thanks brother.

I LOVE “The Jody Grind.” Horace Silver’s compositions on that record are so full of joy and there’s so much fun happening all over the entire album. “Mexican Hip Dance” is one of my all time favorites!
@harchitb3 жыл бұрын
@@edwardevans652 Mexican hip dance is also my favorite actually. I never knew drums could be played that way until that song. Humphries plays entire lyrical passages with the hihat and snare comping. Especially during Horace's solo
@edwardevans6522 жыл бұрын
@Harchit Bhatoia ABSOLUTELY!!! Roger Humphries drumming on “Mary Lou” is Bossa Nova bliss and Larry Ridley’s bass playing is incredibly melodic throughout. LOVE this record so much, I had to buy a backup copy so I don’t wear out my first press. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Hi Dan - It seems like I've been listening to these classic Blue Notes for ever. They are all just wonderful examples of straight ahead soul stirring modern jazz, but in all that time I've never ever thought I was listening to Boogaloo (except of course for Lou Donaldson's Aligator B Album) !!!!!. The Dictionary says ' Boogaloo : A dance to rock and roll music performed with swivelling and shuffling movements of the body'. This music doesn't seem to fit the dictionary description of Boogaloo at all IMHO , but I accept that some people think it's an appropriate description to use. If I recall, Horace Silver was the first person to use the words ' Soul Jazz' to describe this very catchy slightly gospel enfused music on all these Albums, and I'm sure Horace never thought himself as a boogaloo player. So to me this stuff is just straight ahead soul jazz at it's very best. I suppose in the end it doesn't matter what anyone calls this style of music, because it's the thrill of listening to wonderful playing that REALLY counts. Thanks for this session Dan.

yeah the line betweeen soul jazz and BN Boogalooo is very thin,....... there is a bit of a cookie cut sound tho to these songs, that almost lways start these lps

I just got turn on to your channel and love what your doing. This may be off topic, but I just wanted to share one of my favorite two record sets. Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan - Night of Cookers 2lp set. This set is one of my favorite live albums. I love the battle that ensues between the two and the fact that the shortest cut is 19min. Talk about having room to express yourself.
