I was listening to this earlier but forgot to comment but well done as always. The last Bethlehem album I listened to was this great Paula Castle one. It’s still crazy how she did that album and then disappeared. Lots of good vocalists just didn’t get the recognition they deserved at the time.

FANTASTIC VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting video, thanks for your thoughts. I haven't watched a lot of your videos, so I'm not familiar with the push back from the people you call "the idiots" (at 14:42), but a lot of what you said left me with a big question. As you say throughout, "jazz is a feeling, it's not intellectual, it's not driven by ego" and around 13:50 you say "it's an expression of immediate condition"--does this mean that free jazz is the ultimate form of jazz, the apex of its evolution? Spontaneous group improvisation coming from a tradition rooted in the blues, that seems to be not about ego (it's GROUP improvisation, after all), and it seems to be all about "immediate condition," creating and expressing the unfiltered emotions of a group of musicians. And it's not like the oppression of Black people in America disappeared after the Civil Rights movement--hell, there's plenty of that even today in the US, sadly--so it seems like free jazz could still speak to that condition that you find so compelling in the earlier music. A guy like Albert Ayler, who brings blues, RnB, Gospel, and marching band music into a free jazz context, seems like the ultimate jazz musician according to your definitions, but I get the sense that you think free jazz is part of what gives jazz a bad rap to most today. Am I misunderstanding your ideas here, or do you feel that free jazz is intellectual and thus not "real" jazz, despite it's foundation in group improvisation and immediate expression?
@TheJazzShepherd
@TheJazzShepherd 10 күн бұрын
well the the short answer is, andthis comes from Charlie Haden ...tho its has been a while since i saw the footage..but FREE jazz is not free at all, there are all kinds of post markers and signs that one has to follow and pay attention to to not get lost ... I think it has elements of both...intellectualism and improvisation, but this misconception that it was totally free just was not true.. I like a lot of free jazz, but I do think it has driven many from this art, and the people who fan boy that stuff are equally to blame... Free jazz is like a very dry chardonnay, it is not a starting place.. it is an ending destination for some, and many others will never need or go to it and would rather stay with a Zin or a nice Bordeaux!?>

Thanks for your thoughts, I think your last comparison is very apt! It would be kinda nuts to steer a newcomer to jazz toward Cecil Taylor, for example, over some more approachable hard bop, bebop, etc.

I love the fact that the likes of Jimmy Smith and probably Shirley Scott plus quite a few others are looked down upon. It makes such great records easier and much cheaper to find. Please keep on being pretentious if that continues!! Being an oldie from Manchester England I was/still am a big of Joy Divsion /New Order. Saw JD once and N.O. many times including at their night club-The Hacienda.

Vacationed in Brazil late 1980s, three trips with the last stay four weeks. Bossa Nova is great jazz especially if you have the memories of the country, beaches and the girls of Brazil. Already a jazz lover the experience was so damn authentic even in the 80s. God bless Brazil!!!

Brother Dan, sorry I haven’t commented in a long time. Same guy, different email, faithful subscriber. Great vid and I recently bought a Blue vinyl🔵 reissue copy of Miles’ “Blue Moods” on Debut, but distributed by Fantasy. Digging the “Cool Jazz” vibe, Davis plays with beautiful restraint. it’s a VG 1962 copy. Am I wrong for saying that Debut / Fantasy colored vinyl isn’t well recorded? Be well, sir.

@TheJazzShepherd When you say you sometimes don’t think colored vinyl doesn’t age well, do you mean the quality of the vinyl deteriorates compared to black vinyl? I recently purchased and enjoyed a 1986 French reissue of "New Orleans Rarities" on Imperial. 40 tracks on 2 LP's originally released 1949-1958. "Important note: this double album has been mastered from original 78 rpm recordings and the sound quality is not always at it's best." on the back cover. I was unaware that they were still releasing 78 rpm records in 1958! keep up the good shows

Dan - fantastic session! Really a great jumping off point for understanding the jazz (not sure how to label) immediately prior to hard bop. I am not a free jazz kind of guy and have lately been bumping up into the mid-1970s soul jazz that I like, but really find little after 1980 that I listen to. So I have been going backwards into early 50s and 40s. I have listened to quite a bit big band (Artie Shaw, Goodman, Glen Miller, Chick Webb, Lionel Hampton, etc) mostly through compilations, so this sandwich period prior to the development of hard bop (say 1954/1955) has become a period of interest. Recently I have been picking up Clef, Savoy and early Prestige when I can - picked up a Dial 10” record (black cover) from Dexter Gordon that is fantastic. Thanks again.
