In this video I went to use my Woodland Mills HM122 sawmill to do the next clip in the video I was doing but to my surprise I ran into an issue with the sawmill. Therefore, I had to switch to making an attempt to resolve the issue with my sawmill by troubleshooting on the fly. Hence I produced this video.

Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.
And its not all work!! Gotta take time to play - after turning my pond into a skating rink, and a whole bunch more of outdoor activities.

Thanks for the entertainment. During my lunch today, I've been out cleaning grease fittings on the tractor that have gotten way out of hand so I can find one that's not taking grease, but I enjoyed watching your troubleshooting video, now I'm in suspense until part two so we can see if it was the washers.

Your welcome and thanks! Those grease fittings can become an issue if ignored too long. I did speak to a senior tech at Woodland Mills who provided some assistance. We shall see in part 2. Have a great weekend Jeff!

Good afternoon Ben. I agree KZbin is great for sharing ideas. Brian from Retired For Life had a good suggestion and I did speak to a senior tech at Woodland Mills who suggested a couple of things to try out. A great weekend to you as well!

I'm baffled. I ran a large band saw, cutting steel bars, for several years at work in my teens and early 20's. I don't recall a similar problem, but then it was 50 years ago!

Hello Paul! That is a great-looking mill! I hope they can help you at Woodland Mills. When I was young I loved taking things apart....putting them back together not so much!! Waiting for part 2. Take care

Thanks John! Woodland Mills suggested a few things to try. It's always more fun taking things apart opposed to putting back together. Have a great week!

Very informative video, Paul 👍If I remember correctly from my Woodland Mills saw mill, I believe those washers are referred to as Bellville. Washers: I'm not really sure why, but I could imagine over time, they would lose some of their spring and cause the problem you are having. Keep us posted!

Thanks John! That is what the washer are called. I spoke to Woodland Mills and they suggested a few things to check. They did say that the washers should be ok. Have a great week!

You have to be able to fix things yourself, or at least take it apart and order the required parts. Nice job on diagnosing this. It will definitely help others with the same mill. Thanks

Thanks Mike! Totally agree, you do need somewhat of a mechanical aptitude or at least be willing to attempt and learn to develop some mechanical skills. Have a great week!

How's she goin'? All machines need maintenance from time to time. When we can do it ourselves that is great, but when we come upon something like this and we can't resolve the issue, calling the manufacturer is the best way to go. And in this Woodland Mills seem to have a great customer service department so I'm sure they will help you out. Nice job digging into the problem Paul. I'm sure it's not too serious. Take 'er easy!!

Thanks Mike! It's going good Mike. It's fun to try and figure things out but there is a time when a quick call to the manufacturer as you mention is the best way to go. I do have a work around but I want it working the way the day I first got the mill. I spoke to the senior tech at Woodland Mills and he suggested a few things for me to try. They do have excellent customer support. Have a great Sunday Mike!

Really good video Paul. I don't know anything about this but, I think the problem is with the wheel spindle slide. Dirt rust or wear where it slides against the guard housing. Lock washers are a good guide to torque. When the washer is flat the torque is close. Thanks for sharing. Brent

Thank you kindly Brent! There definitely is some friction or binding that doesn't release the tension. Possibly causedby dirt or wear. I spoke to a Woodland Mills senior tech and he suggested a few things for me to check out. Have a fantastic day!

Hi Paul. I had the exact same issue with my mill just a couple of days ago. What I did was I took out the one bolt on the top at the back that you took out. I pulled the unit back and forth a few times and it popped free. I could actually hear something pop. Im pretty sure the spring washers jammed and locked it in place. It hasn’t happened again so I’m not sure why it happened in the first place. Very strange. ALSO don’t forget you left the 4 bolts behind the wheel loose. My suggestion is to leave the one bolt on the top of the adjusting mechanism loose and with the handle in place and tap on the end of the handle with a rubber mallet while wiggling the handle. That is exactly what I did and it suddenly started to work again. I’d be very curious to hear what Woodland Mills says. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion Brian. I'll give it a try. I did go back and tighten the 4 bolts behind wheel. I did talk to the senior tech at Woodland Mills and will cover his suggestion in my next video. Have a super weekend!

Very frustrating Paul. I hope you figure out why it's sticking. Seems like an odd setup to me with all the washers.

Surprisingly I haven't been frustrated but rather intrigued by the problem. I think but I am not completely sure, the washers cushion the tensioner due to all of the vibration that comes from the mill. I spoke to the senior tech at Woodland Mills and he suggested a few things for me to try. Have a great Sunday Kenny!

Good morning Gary! A sawmill is a great tool to have but it does occupy a lot of your time once you start milling. I hear you, we do spread ourselves a little too thin at times trying to do too many things. Have a super weekend!

Thanks Mark! Darn I watched your video 2 years ago but totally forgot. I don't have the tension upgrade. I just re-watched your video. The one thing that may help out is the torque specs that you provided in the video. It is the one thing that I wanted but didn't have. I am going to go out and re-torque everything now that I know what they should be. I really appreciate the assistance.
