Hi David, I've been watching your vlogs since your beginnings. Next week we start cruising after buying a boat a year ago, doing her up and then retiring. Two and half years of planning and work coming together. Can't tell you how excited we are. So thank you for being my inspiration. Including your learning curve bits gave me the courage to keep going when I made a pig's ear on Billy. We're doing the Avon Ring first, so we'll be nudging past the Grand Union on our way to Stratford. Enjoy your Autumn cruising.

With a horn on the front to warn other boats, I can only assume that the bell at the helm must be to call up for a G&T from the galley. Good idea!
@Widestone0014 жыл бұрын
As a solo live-aboard David might have a bit of a heart attack if that worked though. ;-) Um, question: T stands for Tea, that's no question. Not being a Brit myself, I can't think of anything useful for the G though - so what does it stand for? What it does not stand for is: Gookie, Gandwich, Goffee, Gin (maybe, though drinking and driving don't mix all that well, including on the canals), Gracker, Gheese, Groissant... though, the Swiss word for Croissant would be "Gipfeli", so that might work.

G&T is Gin and Tonic

We've been on many canal holidays, from around 7 or so in the early-mid '80s to two in the last 4 years or so. On the Leeds & Liverpool canal, we took a wide beam boat (from Silsden). It was the first ever wide beam we've had but really appreciated the extra width, especially in the living room as there were 7 of us. The problem with these is that they are a pig to steer. Firstly, as they moved a lot more water out of the way, a shallow canal edge will tend to pull the rear in, if you get close to it. Secondly, the yaw (turning) inertia is around 3-4 times that of a narrow beam (mass-distance squared and all that), so the boats's response massively lag your inputs. These videos are wonderfully calming.

Evening Sir, just wanted to say how much I’m loving your videos. I came over from the ‘Vandemonium’ Chanel and now I’m hooked! There is nothing more relaxing than watching the lovely ‘chug’ of a narrow boat on a summers day! The development of that bit of bank from unusable mess to under construction to shiny new moorings is a supremely satisfying plotline, and you slowly gaining confidence with tunnels is a splendid character arc. Truly this is the best show I'm watching these days.

@@for.tax.reasons Agreed. The books aren't half bad, but honestly not my favourites either. For that i recommend R.A. Salvatore. just putting that out there in order to offer an alternative for literature to fill the time between canal vlogs. And I can assure you tea and biscuits (or cookies in my case) also go very well with those - unless of course you get caught up in the story of those books and forget all about the tea - which is actually a very real risk.

That electronic whistle that sounded with key start got Georgie cat's full attention from across this room! Tradline was/is quite a place. Sure looks like it would be fun to travel to UK to experience canals (and the railway preservations y'all have) but my health prevents that; so, I enjoy y'all's videos from the comfort of this apartment. The time, effort, and resources, you put in to sharing these with us viewers scattered across the planet are appreciated, thank you. Ah, see comments with Star Wars references, currently have video paused just shy of the four minute mark while typing this, now back to watching to see where the reference comes up :)

Great to see you on the Cut again. You are doing a vacation/holiday the way I like to do it. I just point my car in a random direction and see where the road goes. I used to toss a road atlas in the back seat go get totally lost for a week and when I needed to go home I'd find where I was in the Atlas and find my way home, ( now I just turn the GPS off for a week ;-), then let it pick a route home. Loved the camel bridge too, it was a proper double humped camel too. " Bronstin bridge, bet I spelled it wrong."

People really need to visit the English canal system. I can't explain, but the canals really do have a sense of mystery (and history) about them. There is a deep sense of something. It especially manifests itself during the winter when there is no one else around. You almost feel it. When I visit the U.K. I have to visit the canal. The canals were an essential part of my childhood and I miss them.
