I should have written this earlier i think. Sandy really got me now. I Love this woman It took some time because Stephen Fry is one of my favourite comedians and comedywriters ever. But she does it so wonderfully. It is a pleasure to watch her. ⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘

One might have gone on to mention that the 1701 Act of Settlement, the 1707 Act of Union, and putting the Protestant George I on the British throne in 1714 was in effect what put the House of Stuart, and therefore the Jacobites, out of succession to the throne, and the House of Hanover onto it. James II of England & VII of Scotland was the last Roman Catholic monarch of England and Great Britain. He was deposed in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution, but his children were very much in play because they were Protestants. His daughter Mary II assumed the throne in 1689 with her husband William III of Orange as co-monarch. She died in 1694, he died in 1702. They had no surviving issue, therefore Mary's sister Anne was crowned Queen. Anne ruled until her death in 1714. In her lifetime she was pregnant seventeen times. Twelve of those pregnancies ended in still births or miscarriages. Of the five children that were born alive two died on the same day they were born, two didn't make it past the age of two, and one died less than a week after his eleventh birthday. When Anne died the next in line would have been her half-brother James Francis Edward Stuart ("The Old Pretender") had it not been for the Act of Settlement, which made being born into the Church of England a prerequisite for the eligibility of the ruling monarch, but James was a Roman Catholic. The closest eligible Protestant was Sophia of Hanover, granddaughter of James VI & I, but she died two months before Anne did. That's why her eldest son George became King of England and Great Britain. His ascension to the throne provided new fuel to the Jacobite cause, and by extension the War of Succession, and led to the Jacobite uprisings of 1715, 1719 and 1745. The Jacobites also conspired with the French for them to invade Britain, in 1744 and 1759. Neither of those planned invasions actually took place. In 1744 the invading fleet had already been gathered, but a significant storm sank a large part of that fleet, so the French scrapped the attempt. In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, the French had suffered severe Naval defeats at the Battle of Lagos and the Battle of Quiberon Bay, so this planned invasion was also abandoned. Had either one of those invasion actually taken place and been successful Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") might have restored the House of Stuart to power. I hope some of you might find a bit more of the historical context surrounding George's ascension to the throne quite interesting.

a lot of languages don't have vowels in their writing! arabic, persian/farsi, hebrew... the structure of the words makes evident to the native reader what the vowels are. quite tricky to read if the spoken version is lost

The question at the start was either-or, so the answer can't be yes. It's like asking 'do you want an apple or an orange' and someone replies 'yes'. Of course if someone asked a similar question in real life you would say 'I do want some points', because it wouldn't be clear otherwise.

never believed that largest language in the world thing. No matter how often he says it. Mast newer computer and iternet terms are used worldwide and are in any dictionary. And that's before considering that 50% of english is copy&paste latin.

Odd that the audience applauds Sandi for speaking Danish but none of the others for speaking English. I mean, they should applaud her for speaking English, and the others for speaking anything else.

A fair point, but really, English is her "first" language, even if Danish is her mother tongue. :) She spent all of her childhood outside Denmark, mostly in NYC (she's said that she had a thick NY accent until she moved to the UK). She's probably only spoken Danish with her parents for most of her life, and a lot of people in that situation lose that language quickly. Good on her for holding on to it.
