Watching this video brought back some memories. When I was an enlisted man in the Navy, I was stationed in Norfolk from January 1979 to July 1982. I was at the Naval Base for eighteen months of shore duty from January 1979 to July 1980 and then I was re-assigned to a ship (a frigate) which almost never went anywhere because they couldn't get the engines to work properly. As a result, I spent three-and-a-half years of my four year enlistment in one place.

Sensational Jim, didn't realize Norfolk had so much tourist attractions within it. I'd normally drive straight through on main street, heading to my favorite fishing spot, (James River Pier). I need to make more pit stops and little diversions to check out what I'm driving pass. Thanks Jim, another great video..

The one I keep forgetting is that there are technically TWO exits for I-264 EAST from I-64 East. One's marked as the main exit, and puts you onto the inner lanes, and the other is marked only for Newtown Road, but puts you on the outer lanes so you can stay on 264 East if you so desire. Got stuck in traffic due to an accident in the inner lanes, after taking the wrong ramp following a trip to the Botanical Gardens when I saw the backup coming the opposite the other way.
@garygee349 жыл бұрын
Yes thats eastbound. Westbound there's also two, one puts you in the main lanes of 64, the other into the odd HOV system. Odd because you get on then can't get off til 564 for the Naval Base, not even for the airport, and has a concrete moveable barricade system with gates. Then from 264 East, there's two exits for 64 West, one on the right and one on the left, both of which dump traffic into the main lanes of 64, but tthe left one is easier for traffic from the unprotected HOV lane on 264E to access the 64W HOV.

Nice video Jim and I-64 at the naval base has heavy pm rush traffic going towards Williamsburg and Richmond. Also US-13 from Dover,De down to Cape Charles is a slow drive with a short freeway section at Salisbury, MD and US-13 has a rest stop at the VA/MD border fmr Union-Confederacy border

Norfolk, Virginia. Was there this past December. Traffic, especially east of that complex cloverleaf, can be brutal nightly between 4PM and 7PM. How many videos are coming from the Hampton Roads area? Any of the Downtown/Midtown Tunnels now that they've slapped up electronic tolling on them?

To the main audience of these videos the sign graphic at 3:21 is more important as was the interesting on ramp getting there, mentioning the park after the fact would not have made sense, can't note everything or else the video would be too busy. This is a road video, not a chamber of commerce video.

@@jamesconklin120 There's a lot more to my channel than just Norfolk, I'm not from there or even overly familiar with it, I was just passing through and had time to capture some footage. If you compared this to other videos on the channel you'd see that, this channel is mostly about freeways and such, every once in a while I'll take a city street excusrion but it's not the main focus, so of course "Locals" will think that I missed things that are important to them.

To the people who know about the Hampton Roads, some say Norfolk is the very center of the metro area as a core city. For me, I'd say I can't define what is the core city of the entire MSA. The entire metro area have 10 independent cities of Virginia, 6 counties of Virginia and 3 counties of North Carolina. However, I can define which are the core cities of the north and south sides of the Hampton Roads. •North Hampton Roads division core city: Newport News, VA •South Hampton Roads division core cities: Norfolk, VA and Virginia Beach, VA Lastly, I realized that Virginia Beach VA, Chesapeake VA and Suffolk VA are as big as counties since they're the largest independent cities of Virginia by area. Can you believe that?

It's a midsized city, not anything like New York, or Chicago, but its big enough to not be boring. The metro is the 37th largest in the US. Norfolk itself is very compact,( you can walk across in about 3 hours). with the exception of the outer fringes, most of the city is somewhat urban. It is also surrounded by 6 other cities that make up its suburbs (all with there own mini downtowns).
