In Ireland butter is used more often than mayonnaise on sandwiches, especially homemade ones. It's more traditional too. It tastes really nice as well, really tasty with plain chicken sandwiches for example!

As for the butter in sandwiches, in Greece we put it on the sandwich (not inside it, as we do with mayonnaise), so that when we get it in the toaster it will give a crispy taste!! We put it in a sandwich when we want to have it with honey or marmalade (when we don’t bake in the toaster)!
