In this video, we will discuss 14 important signs that your dog is sick and desperately needs your help.
Since dogs can’t tell us when something is wrong, it’s up to us to recognize the signs that they may give us. Here are 14 signs that your dog is crying out for help.
Sudden Aggression
When your relatively young pet suddenly starts to become aggressive, there could be a problem. Your dog could be experiencing pain or have an infection.
Appetite Loss
a dog who seems to be eating less or who has stopped eating for longer than 24 hours is one who needs medical attention.
A loss of appetite can mean infection, parasites, gastric disease, diabetes, and even cancer in some cases.
Hiding
A pet who goes from craving your attention to hiding under the bed all day might be in bad shape. Pets who suddenly start to hide could be stressed out or have an invisible illness wreaking havoc in their body.
In dogs, it's important to take hiding as a bad sign.
Postural changes
When your tummy or joints hurt, you might have an instinct to stretch the area. Dogs have this instinct, too. So, if your dog starts to display odd positions such as the "prayer position" which means bum up, front down, and legs rigid, he might be having abdomen problems. Other positions that indicate a problem include the "sawhorse" - rigid legs outstretched- and a back that hunches or arches.
Lack of Energy
Although this is a bigger concern in puppies and young dogs, general disinterest in exercise or active pastimes can be an indication that your furry friend is ill or has a physical problem that is hurting them.
Increased urination coupled with drinking a lot
If your dog is housetrained and suddenly starts to urinate all over the house or needs to go outside more often, it might be due to some kind of illness. Namely, a dog who drinks a lot and then urinates frequently might be battling diabetes or a kidney problem.
Swollen Tummy
A distended abdomen - that is a large, swollen tummy- can mean several different problems. It can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance, an infection, a digestive disease, or internal bleeding. Undiagnosed, this problem can make it hard for your dog to breathe as it puts pressure on the lungs.
Crying or Whining
Crying or Whining can indicate that your dog is experiencing some kind of pain.
Too much fur loss
So, if you notice unusual clumps of hair on the floor or large patches of bare skin on your pet's back, a vet visit is necessary. Too much shedding can be an indication of skin disease. In some cases, it can also be due to a vitamin deficiency, an allergy, or an overload of stress.
Changes in maintenance habits
When your dog starts to neglect their grooming routine, it may be time for a checkup. Your dog could be suffering from a range of ailments that cause fatigue, which would explain the undoing of their grooming habits.
Excessive licking
Dogs will lick an area a lot if there is pain in that area. Commonly, dogs with sore paws or legs will lick them. They could also be suffering from fleas, which cause itchiness. Sometimes, licking means gastrointestinal issues are at play - especially if your pet starts to lick strange surfaces.
Trouble getting up
When your dog seems to take ages to stand up, he's probably not feeling well. A dog who takes a long time to pull themselves into a standing position is probably experiencing some form of pain, such as arthritis. He may also be suffering from internal disease that causes a loss of strength and energy.
Sleeping longer than usual
If you notice your dog is suddenly sleeping longer than usual, it may be a sign of diabetes, infections, thyroid gland issues, or stress.
Dilated pupils
Random pupil dilation or pupils that are large for an extended period of time can be a telltale sign that something hurts. Pupil dilation is connected to an increase in adrenaline, which surges when something hurts.
Gums changing color
Normally, your dog's gums are a healthy shade of pink, with the exception being certain breeds like chows. So, when you catch a glimpse of those gums and they're not pink and vibrant, your pet could be suffering from some kind of sickness.
Gums that are redder than usual can indicate a dental issue - especially if the redness is right above the teeth, while bleeding gums can be a sign of trauma or infections.
Pale gums that lack color are usually a sign of blood loss. This is because gums get their bubble-gum pink color from blood flowing beneath the surface.
In addition, gums that have ulcers or an unpleasant odor should be taken as a warning sign.
Coughing
Coughing can be a result of breathing difficulties in breeds with pushed in faces such as pugs. These breeds are prone to airway blockages and sinus problems in the first place. A non-pushed in face dog who coughs likely had what's known as "kennel cough". This is the doggy equivalent to a cold, and it generally passes within a few weeks.

My dog had most of these symptoms. If your dog is not feeling well, you will usually know pretty quickly. I was with my Fred most of the day for 14 years and I could tell when he had any ailment. The worst one came at the end though. He had CCD (similar to canine Alzheimer’s). It moves very fast in dogs. He also had very high liver enzymes and arthritis. My little guy toughed it out and pushed himself to stay with me until my husband was done with cancer treatments and surgery. The month after my husband received a clean bill of health/remission diagnosis from the doctor, my baby crashed. He had most of the symptoms listed plus some. He could no longer get around, he stopped eating, he didn’t understand where he was one day and that’s when I had to make the worst decision of my life. I’ll never forget my Fred. He got me through the hardest times of my life and he was my other half. Don’t take for granted a single second that you have with your doggos. I would give anything for another minute with mine.

My abused rescue - we’ve had him for 2 years...... adopted him at 7 years old.....the prior asshole owners left him at a high kill shelter but he was microchipped . That’s where we came in.......he was so unhappy growling biting hiding shaking acting crazy.....I’ve cried soooo many tears with and over him but now almost 2 years later. He’s so perfect- with routines love walks and a peaceful environment - he’s a balanced happy loving dog ......it’s truly amazing and he’s so loved by us. Before my dog, a 14yr old Chihuahua passed away this was his behavior: -lost of energy -lost of appetite -hard to breath -asked for hugs/being pet more than usual -suddent feeling of heat -jump from my bed to the floor very hard several times -trouble to get up -denial to go to bed until I followed him His vet let me know he had heart issues which caused him issues to breathe and that it was supposed to be controlled under medication (he passed away not even a month after starting the treatment) At the end, another vet let me know he was about to go through hypothermia. His last night he jumped from my bed to the floor several times (he needed to be warm due the hypothermia and I needed to check and make sure he was still breathing) I knew he was about to die and hour before due the smell and his eyes. So please people, if you notice any of this issues on your puppies or dogs take them ASAP to a great vet, to honor my wonderful chester 😔

For anyone here that is scared that their dog is doing the “prayer position” while waking up from a nap, do not worry. Your dog is most likely stretching after a nap, but if they do that pose excessively, then you should take them to the vet. I thought I’d clarify a few things, because my dog also stretches after he naps.

This is true. Some of the signs mentioned was experienced by my 8yo mixed breed. She started to drink a lot of water, sleeps longer than before, became unenergetic. The most alarming sign that ive had noticed was the pus coming out from her vulva, thats when i panicked. She was diagnosed with open pyometra and somehow i felt the guilt as i have neglected my dog's sickness. The decision to have an emergency surgery was so abrupt in order to save her life from complications like sepsis. She was saved from the life threatening disease. Thank God! And it was during her surgergy that the vet discovered there was a tumor in her cervix. Good thing it was removed 🙂🙏

As someone who lost 2 dogs in the same week I can tell you this.... if your dog starts looking for a dark place, it's not a good sign. But also, dogs don't necessarily give you any warning. My beagle got sick suddenly and died, then the very next day his companion of 11 years laid down and died for no reason whatsoever. She literally died of a broken heart.

I think it started because the cats used to hide under the bed and shed follow them as a puppy, now she's so big it looks ridiculous for her to squeeze under there but she doesn't seem to realize she's a bit big for it now 😅 it's her safe place as she's an anxious dog so when something scares her (eg loud noise) she hides there.

I had a dog, a golden dachshund named Scooby, that died in September 2019. He had some of these issues, yet they went unnoticed, as I didn't know that they might indicate disease. My lost beloved bichon Flora experienced all these symptoms before passing away. Suddenly she sleeped a lot, afterwards she had severe diarrhea and vomiting. And she went hiding under the beds which was very unusual because she used to love laying down in her bed (that was her favorite thing to do). She had pale gums and shed her fur like crazy. And in her last days she couldn't even get up and walk and if she did walk 2 or 3 steps she would vomit. And her belly was extra swollen that she couldn't stand up. The vet told us that she had a very rare disease which caused her to have an infection in her belly and her liver had stopped working in addition her kidneys were partially stopped. She was a very calm and loyal dog, she was family and stayed with us for 6 beautiful years. She rarely barked (only out of excitement when she knows that she would go for a walk) and she cried whenever we came home. It's been 8 months since she passed and I can't get over her. I can't imagine the pain that she had to go through for 2 months. So whenever you doubt that your furry friend isn't feeling okay, take him to a strong vet. Because maybe if we took Flora to a vet earlier, she would still be with us right now.

My beautiful three year old border collie didn't eat one Saturday night. When he still didn't appear to be hungry on Sunday I took him to the vet first thing Monday morning. Our old dog Leroy had arthritis. We did our best to help. What was really hard was the final week. He wasn’t eating, barely drinking. We thought he was coughing from laying on his back, but might have been a swollen heart. The damn vet didn’t want to see him once they learned he was having breathing problems. Not for two weeks. Made the decision, I asked work for the day off and on October 15th 2020 at about 12:27 pm, he was gone. Had a person come down from Seattle. I remember him trying to get away from my dad when he got the first thing of whatever it is to calm him down before she came in with the medicine to stop the heart and brain. The prayer position thing (or what many of us refer to as the downward dog lol) is so true. I know my dog has an upset stomach when she holds that position. Sometimes she’ll stay there for 10 mins in the stretch. If she’s does that she will usually throw up or poop shortly after. So, for all those who are taking there 5 second stretch as what they are talking about - their stomach hurts when they hold it for a long time and not just a quick stretch after waking up.

The "prayer position" is either 2 things : your dog stretching and what's known as the " play position " meaning your dog wants to play. Also, hair loss around the buttocks, tail and lower back is usually from a flee allergy. If your dogs tummy is hard and bloated, it's likely worms. You're dog panting can mean they are hot and trying to cool down or they have to #2. Please remember that dogs do have thier own lanuage and by learning and understanding it, you can become s better owner / pet parent.

Guys never ignore your dog’s symptoms!! I did that mistake. I knew he was sick but I thought he was going to get better. He didn’t eat anymore of his dog food but ate human food once in a while. He started excessively licking his paws until you could see his skin. I thought he was just stressed. He started throwing up and diarrhea everyday but I thought it was because he was hungry. He still liked going for walks and that gave me hope. I took him to the vet a week later and they said he had a intestinal blockage and needed surgery fast. It has happened before where he eats socks but, got better. Not this time. (Has a habit). It could have been something else because I remember when he started showing symptoms he threw up a sock. I didn’t expect that he swallowed more or something else. Well I will never know bc we didn’t do xrays. Parents didn’t have enough money so we had to put down. Before you get a pet always save money or get insurance for ur pet for those unexpected times. My dog passed away on June 30th of 2020 at the age of 5:( RIP Buddy ily. Now I’m filled with regret and cry everyday till this day. I also blame my parents for not taking him to the vet earlier. Take in mind I’m almost 15 so I can’t really do anything to help.😔

Coughing can also be a sign of a heart condition as well. I took my dog to see the vet when she was coughing frequently, thinking she had an upper respiratory infection. X-rays showed that her lungs were clear, but her heart was enlarged.

Have you actually checked that there is nothing wrong? And if you think its because your dog is picky (it may not be the only reason) then why not try to find a brand of dog food your dog actually likes and stick with it instead of using new foods it may potentially not like. Dogs can eat the same food every day (of course as long as their nutrient needs are met but dog foods are designed to do that)

My gf and I just rescued a dog a couple months ago. She was so amazingly well behaved we knew instantly, and when we took her home, it was like she was with us forever. Wanted nothing but love, and to sleep in between us, get her belly rubbed - just a pure bundle of joy. Just last night my gf texted me saying “something’s wrong she’s not acting right”. When I got home she was panting, she was having diarrhea, and she would sit at the door crying to go out, no matter how many times we walked her. Then at night she started looking at me weird, and when I pet her (which she never could get enough of) she growled almost demonically, and bit my face. I literally love this dog so much, and what’s odd, is she’s not behaving like this with her, just to me. I’m so sad, and obviously something is wrong, I’m hoping it’s not serious and this will pass, cause I don’t have hundreds of dollars for tests and I’m just praying it won’t come to that. I want my baby girl to love me again and not be in pain :( *update* so things have been slowly getting better - she hasn’t been coming to me or excited, but I can at least walk her, and she hasn’t been aggressive. But just so happens TODAY, I’ve been coming down with some kind of bug, and she definitely could tell I’m not well. I woke up and she was snuggling wrapped in ball between my legs, she followed me around the house and started looking at me with eyes that didn’t say “I’m gonna kill you”, but with love dovey eyes. She even rolled around the floor and I could rub her belly, and she nested her nose on my Feet. So on and so forth… I am so happy right now, even though I feel sick, it will be worth it if she’s making her way back to me.. everyone in our family said we need to get rid of her and we almost did, but we just couldn’t do it… I hope 🤞 this turns around! Not being able to look, or go near a dog that’s become part of your family, is one of the most emotionally taxing experiences, and I’m just so happy to see some light at the end of the tunnel!

Bring the dog to the vet and find out if there is something medically wrong with her. At least have a basic check done, to make sure she is ok. Imagining it may cost hundreds of dollars....when it may not at all, is not helpful or fair to the dog. If it is something that turns out to be more costly, contact a charity for assistance to give the dog the medical care she needs

Some of these symptoms vary for every dog and they definitely won't apply for all. These symptoms should usually only concern you if its sudden. Some dogs just naturally don't have as much energy as others and like to relax while others like doing the prayer position stretch for fun. Both of those examples apply to my dog but she passes her vet checkups with flying colours. Don't immediately panic if you notice your dog does some of these stuff, it could just be a normal behaviour for them. Of course you know your dog the best so if you do feel like something's wrong then it never hurts to play it safe and pay a visit to the vet.

The biggest thing to watch out for is very sudden changes. Appetite especially, even more so if your dog loves food. All these thing can be normal if the change is over time. I mean sudden lack of appetite, energy, or sudden breathing or appearance changes. I mean over like a week or even a day- before most peta die they will typically do thinks in this order but not always. -stop eating -drink less -jump up on object, settle, get up jump down- repeat. -very sudden loss of energy -breathing difficulties - Because appetite loss is usually the first sign something is wrong that’s why it so Important to watch out for.

My parents took my younger dog to the vet because he was just more aggressive than most dogs. He bit my sister, and was just more aggressive than usual. Not knowing why, my parents took him to the vet, and he was put to sleep 🥺 I met my dog when I asked my mom if we could get a dog. After a while, she decided to get me a dog, since I had never had one before. He was practically my first pet other than my pet Rabbit. So my mom took me to this pet store, and I chose him. We brought him home and surprised everyone. We had so much fun time together, but he didn’t live long. He only lived about 2 years, and I was so traumatized and sad when he died. I hope that if you have dogs, you take time to spend the rest of your dogs life to have fun with it and pay attention to it.

One of my puppies stop eating and drinking water, he didn’t have energy or wanted to play. So I took him to the vet and physically he was fine until the vet looked at his tongue, my poor dog was bleeding. The doctor said he had mouth ulcers. I feed him and gave him water and medicines with a syringe. It important to take your dogs to the vet if any sign of sickness arises.

My 10 yr old chihuahua is on medication for same thing. He has collapsed a few times while coughing, it’s so heartbreaking. I make sure I give him his medication every day and if he gets worse I know I’ll be faced with the decision of letting the vet put him to sleep. My last dog had a back disease she was born with. We didn't know till she was five. One day I woke up and knew something was wrong. She wouldn't eat, drink water, come near me and sh whined like she had never whined before. Took her to the vet, and it turned out she was in excruciating pain. The Dr told me she's been hiding the pain for a long time, till the disease got real bad. Looking back, she was a very aggressive dog since puppy on and off and could never figure out why? We ended up having to put her down when she was 8 yrs old. Some of these signs are true, others like the prayer stretching, I think is very normal behavior.

2:03 can also mean the dog is just bored or really misses someone, whenever I leave my dog when I go out I come back and my parents tell me how they tried to play with him but he didn’t want to, they realized he just missed me because he’s close to me but he wasn’t sick. Also it can mean your dog is just pregnant if it’s a female so you can just go for a vet check up to see. Also the prayer position is just a stretching position.

Excessive licking can also mean seasonal allergies. My pup gets flare-ups and sometimes gets hot spots. The vet gave her an allergy med and she’s much more comfortable and not licking as much. It would be helpful to add that to your video as it is very common.
