Great lesson, Adam! Thank you very much. Bono sings this expression "sleight of hands" in the song "With or Without you", but he pronounces it "slight". "Irregardless" is a new one for me. I had never heard it before. But ... "anyways" is very common in New York City. I learned to use this "mistake" there, and I have to confess that it's been a bit hard getting rid of it.

Methinks "irregardless" comes from the confusion with its synonym "irrespective". To me, "irregardless" is utterly unacceptable since it makes no logical sense, just like "could care less".

i'm writing below to learn all expressions meanings in video:) 1. couldn't care less: really don't care 2. regardless: whatever happened 3. for all intents and purposes: almost completely done 4. self-deprecating: putting ourselves down / lowering my own value 5. ex-patriate: remove someone from a country 6. nip it in the bud: nip=cut *before sth grows too big to control, you should cut and you want nip it in the bud 7. peace of mind: everything is okey, relax, no worries, no doubts 8. piece of my mind: i will tell you exactly what i think 9. sleight of hand: trick, you don't actually know what happened 10. 1st come, 1st serveD 11.whet your appetite: whet meanings to sharpen like knife *you make it sharper or stronger to help you enjoy the meal 12. deep-seated: sth to sitted deep inside of you and so hard to get out or change 13. hunger *pangs* 14. case in point: sth that you use as an example to support your idea if i did any mistakes please correct me:)

Why do Americans (often) say 'I could care less'? It makes no sense at all.

I believe, EngVid is a Canadian enterprise, so I assume that Canadians are not much better at this :) I agree, it doesn't make any sense, but it's the same in my native language, Russian: most people learn many expressions like these from casual conversation and don't read many books. Now imagine how many mistakes the Chinese must do in their language, given that in their writing system, there is essentially no connection between phonetics and ideograms they write.
@SaigonBrit Жыл бұрын
@@bytefu Great point indeed. It's often about what people read versus what they hear. However, that doesn't excuse the mispronunciation of 'parmesan' (as in the Italian cheese) by most Americans (and some Brits!)

Hello! At the end of February I plan to take the IELTS exam in English, I am looking for like-minded people, or just wanting to practice speaking. my level is low b1 approximately. Всем привет! На конец февраля планирую сдавать IELTS exam на английском, ищу единомышленников, или просто желающих потренировать спикинг . уровень у меня невысокий b1 примерно, спикинг слабоват.

Also in Italian we experience the same issue on "couldn't care less" , i guess it's due to the fact the people are lazy and are keen on shortening the statements as they are widely understood anyway

Wow, I suddenly feel much better about my English. My primary sources of education in the language for the first decade was elementary and middle school (started learning at age 7, learned very little), then, for roughly another decade, video games with a dictionary, and in the last decade - first programming documentation and the Internet, then I gradually started watching movies and TV shows, but have only read less than a dozen books total. And I still knew the correct variants of most of the expressions, especially "self-deprecating". Took me measly 30 years to reach a decent proficiency level 😁 Jokes aside, I suspect it is much easier to learn English living in an English-speaking country, as opposed to Russia. And it is definitely easier, at least to me, to learn languages with a fully developed brain (that's a bold statement, isn't it).
