I wish i never found this channel lol , I’m itching to find a 14-16ft aluminum boat to do a build on . I’ll probably look for a old 14-16ft starcraft that’s a closed bow with a windshield and then remove the windshield and cut the front making it a open bow because boats like you guys have cost the same or more as a older starcraft of the same size here in canada and those starcraft are tanks ,very well built . I can get one for $3k or less just hate to butcher one up being there classic boats but with the closed bow you lose so much space . . How safe and secure would you say your boat feels after having it for awhile? I feel like if the weight doesn't exceed the boats weight capacity your fine right? Everyone I see making these boats seem to be doing fine with very minimal foam and doing fine with the pink foam sheeting under floor boards.

I think when it was all said and done it totaled to be around 150 lbs. The boat was slow to begin with, only having a 6 1/2 horse Johnson so I believe the top speed dropped from 9 mph to 8.

how did you support the very front of the deck in the at tip of the boat? I have similar boat and only thing up there is the bolt for the winch hook.
@MissionForFishing3 жыл бұрын
The deck is cut to wedge against the sides of the hull. It wasn't my idea but it gets the job done. I personally would have riveted an aluminum strip to the side and bent a tag end which would stick out from the hull to screw and support the deck.

@chowboy444 жыл бұрын
great job guys, how did you support the front deck at the bow? It didn't look like there was any existing support to begin with. Thanks
@MissionForFishing4 жыл бұрын
We reinforced the bottom of the deck with furring strips and cut the front as close as we could to the shape of the hull. Because the hull tapers down at the front, the deck applies pressure to either side due to its shape which keeps the deck from sagging in. Its holding up very well and we have not had any issues with it yet.
@coltonappel17014 жыл бұрын
If you do something like this again, you could use painted styrofoam boards to section off hatches and it would help with stability and add to the reserve buoyancy if you manage to swamp it

Great work guys! One question though, is it not really top heavy to have a deck up that high and dramatically altering the centre of gravity on a small tinner like that?
@MissionForFishing3 жыл бұрын
Good question, the deck actually helped with stability overall. My guess is from the additional weight below deck from the added storage space. It surprised us when we first tested it out, so after scratching our head that's about all we came up with.

How long did the paint take to fully cure and hardened I painted my boat with same paint and it seems like paint might not hold up to good
@MissionForFishing3 жыл бұрын
We gave the paint 24 hours between each coat as suggested by Rustoleum. If the coating appears to not harden correctly, I would check the humidity/temperature of the environment, or consistency within the can (can be fixed by stirring the paint in the can for a few minutes before application). Multiple coats and a good clean surface to adhere are also critical to the adhesion of the paint. I hope this was somewhat helpful.

Beautiful job, but isn't the carpet going to be runied easy while fishing?
@MissionForFishing4 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly no, indoor outdoor carpet is meant to not only look good for indoor applications, but also resist stains and fading from outdoor use. Almost every stain I have gotten on my carpet has come out with a little elbow grease. We would go with marine carpet but its like 4X the price.

I am thinking of doing something similar to my 14ft Harbour craft. Just wondering how you guys made the front part, between the front seat and the very tip of the boat, stable enough to stand on? It looked like you just put a piece of plywood from the edge of the seat and let it rest on the side walls of the bow of the boat ...
@MissionForFishing2 жыл бұрын
Yup, that’s basically what we did with additional under framing. It was stable enough for a guy to stand on but if you wanted even more structural support I’d probably look into riveted support tabs on the side of the hull. We’ve never done it ourselves, but that appears to be the next best solution. Hope this helped!
@fillup862 жыл бұрын
@@MissionForFishing Ah ic. Yah it's just a weird spot for framing, but thanks, and the rivet tabs sound good, but I don't feel like drilling through the hull
@MissionForFishing2 жыл бұрын
That's ultimately why we didn't use rivets either. The reinforcement seemed to do the trick for us since its such a weird shape with odd dimensions.
@fillup862 жыл бұрын
@@MissionForFishing yah exactly. So what did you do exactly for the front? Can't really see it in the video
@MissionForFishing2 жыл бұрын
Yes, 9:10 in the video gives a glimpse of the under framing which just consisted of 2x2's screwed to the underside for rigidity. The only spots supporting the deck are the fixed front seat and the natural taper of the hull which keeps the deck wedged at its set height, hence why the front deck dimensions needed to be as precise as possible.
