Fabulous. Well done. Please note that on page 302 of A Theory of Justice that the Second Principle reads: "Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both (a) to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged, consistent with the savings principle, and (b) attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity." Evaluating the justice of a political economy from the perspective of an "advantage to all" is a little different from the perspective of "the least advantaged." The former is an easy case to make, the latter is more difficult.

Distributive justice is concerned on the distribution of both the burdens and benefits of social cooperation. What does Rawls say about how the burdens must be distributed? What should those who cooperate -- those who contribute to producing the benefits -- receive in exchange of their cooperation and contribution? In concrete terms, who are the "least advantaged"? Please give examples. Exactly how many social classes are there in Rawls's conception of society?

Christ Church is the largest and probably richest college in Oxford, it is the sister college of Trinity College, Cambridge. Both New College and Magdalen are top colleges too.

"2a" in the slide of Principle of Justice, economic inequalities should NOT be "to everyone's advantage" BUT to "the advantage of the least benefited". In other words, inequality can be justified only if it favors the poorest. This is what i have been taught about Rawls.

Wilhelm Tham: Rawls begins with the qualifier “to everyone’s advantage” and later he refines this qualifier to “to the greatest advantage of the least advantaged.” So both of y’all are right.

Great video thanks for taking the time out to put it together. I have a specific question with regards to the viability of this theory in contemporary human societies. The components and elements of the theory are certainly enriching and thought provoking but how would the process actually come about?

One idea is that in order to fulfill the positive rights duties called for in the 2nd principle part b), (the difference principle), the government enacts policies that benefit the least advantaged in society. Like... paying extra wages for general practitioners to work. The poor have much greater need for gen practitioners than for specialists. and typically specialists make way way more than generals, so, the government creates the policy that generals get paid more than the market, such as it exists, pays. The positive duty of the 2nd principle could be instantiated with a more principled social security. Say... folks earning 25,000.00 per year and folks earning 225,000.00 per year both put in 12.5 percent of their gross wages into social security, and then both take out a fixed amount of 1,000.00 month from ages 65 to age 85 when they both die. This thought example of two persons demonstrates: the rich person puts in more than the poor person and receives back the same amount, it thus works to the benefit the least advantaged in society. see pages 60..61 of the A Theory of Justice, and pp 42-43 of Justice as Fairness.

Prof. Thorsby, thanks for this, I am yet to go through the entire series, and I would sure do that, but I am fascinated that you seem to move between analytic and the so called continental school, may I ask if you are placing your own work in the interstices between the two somehow?

at about 36:38, The first principle is negative. Its about liberties. see. negative rights, are where we just wanna be left alone basically. the government does not have positive duties to provide you with anything. Rather, here for Rawls, the gov says ya'll are equal and have basic indefeasible rights. pp 42 - 43 of Justice as Fairness, and pp 60, 61 of the 1st edition 1st printing through at least the 10th printing in 1980 ( which are the copies that I own). The second principle is positive. The government of a constitutional democracy ( the narrowing of Rawls focus beginning around 1975 when he published this focus in other languages, and then makes this clear in his, "political liberalism" and his "justice as fairness". So: negative rights and positive rights: see Isaiah Berlin, and Ronald Dworkin, ... et al . Am I incorrect that you might be referring to neg and pos rights in this line of thought ? are you saying positive , for the 1st principle, and negative for the 2nd in an entirely new usage of the words?

23:00 people are also equal in the original position. 27:00 I study the original position, it's a pity you didn't understand either, and that's why I'm going to keep researching, as it seems that there is still a big misunderstanding. the natural attributes (intelligence, strength...) means that it is society that attributes value to the different attributes of people, therefore, they cannot be taken into account.

Why is Christ Church the most prestigious Oxford College? New College? Magellan?
@PhilosophicalTechne

+barty116 I may be wrong about this. From what I understand Christ Church has the most competition for applicants compared to the other Colleges. In addition, a number of Oxford's most prestigious alumni went here. But, I don't want to step on anyone's toes. Take a look at the College websites to get a sense of how the different colleges at Oxford compare. Even better, contact one of the admissions officers to learn more.

How does a nation be forced to be committed to something they know is not right? Something we the people see every century, that some leading force comes in our life to guide us towards the wrong things that mess up our life. Where we go along with singing Jesus Christ got control of our life, and country is the reason we walk so right. Are we blind, and a fool to be talking like that? Using the good brother's name praising all the wrong things we got addicted to as a way of life. Is there something wrong with our understanding about life that confuses us in seeing things, right? That our body woke but our minds sleep, that we sleep walking into everything that's not right. That is the only reason one can think of to watch a whole nation of people let their life go down the drain and say nothing. If we think life is supposed to be this way from now on. Why do we still want to talk about we number one. Is the other countries that stupid, or are they just letting us talk any kind of way we want?

The lecturer is disorganized, discursive and digressive and he rolls over his terminology in a haphazard fashion. I would recommend The Theory of Justice to get a clear idea of Rawls.
