I’m from Yorkshire, in the North of England. I went to University in Canterbury (in the south of England), and have since lived in France, Spain and the USA.

My mother tongue is English. I have a Batchelor’s degree in French and lived for 1 year in France, so I speak fluent French. I have lived in Spain for over 8 years and speak fluent Spanish, and I also learnt Italian to intermediate level while at university (but have forgotten most of it). I also tried learning Portuguese, Greek and Swahili very briefly.
» Can you recommend a TV series to help me improve my English?
My recommendation is to find something you love watching in your native language, and then watch it in English. This way, you already know the characters, you know the story, and can focus on the language. This is funny thing. I can clearly see that "old language" speakers have an advantage. UK guy can catch US guy talk, but US guy cannot understand UK guy (sometimes). I was told by one woman in Portugal, Portuguese can understand Brazilians, but not the opposite. My friend from Brazil confirmed that he cannot understand "original" Portuguese and in Lisbon he ordered a meal in the restaurant in English. I was shocked. Cheers from Poland.

I try my best to watch it in English, bc it’s the original language, but the Scottish accent is something else, so I have to change and watch it in Spanish. En español puede que hayan paises que no se logren entender, pero no creo que haya algo tan fuerte como la manera escocesa de hablar el inglés. Onya Greg! We have a lot in common. The only words that were unknown to me were: Offie (because there is no such thing here. (We have bottle shop or bottle-o) Deffo (no equivalent I can think of.) Thanks for your channel. I think there are various reasons that I find hard to understand British English in class. Concisely speaking. Pronunciation, speed and slangs make it hard for me to follow and also I feel hard to speak fluently as the native speaker. I have lived in UK for undergraduate, but I still find it hard to follow the native speaker in class as they won't speak like in any English Learning Channel. Speaking faster and with lots of slangs using in conversation. So for many times, I feel I could not hear clearly so that find it hard to catch up the native speaker.

Ha, yes, I can imagine Americans pronounces probably without the 'obabl'. We sometime write 'prob' or 'probs', but would not say it in spoken English. These really are important words to know. When I first moved to Spain to teach English I had to quickly learn what words like profe, cole and peque meant! 😀

Yes sarni short for sandwich but in Manchester England my Mum would always ask us if we wanted a sugar buttie a half sandwich bread butter and sugar one piece of bread rolled on top of its self and there you have it. My Mum was born in 1923 in Staffordshire so I don't know if it was a Manchester thing or Staffs thing but very enduring.

The ones that get me are the golf instruction videos. For whatever reason, they are all either British or Irish, and I mean HEAVY accent British or Irish. They generally go something like this: Allo (hello) Allo, Roga here to give you some queek (quick) teeps (tips) on improving yah short game. Plenty of blokes you'll see line up all squabbly, with their feet pointed in every direction but sideways. That's all wrong, folks... I mean, if you wanna heet the ball solid, you gotta squa ya shoulders above the ball, don'tcha? Ya can't have the ball someway ovah heeyah, or even heeyah. That just won't werk now, will it? Eef you line yaself up straight ways ovah the ball, like so... you can see yah swing will HEET the ball at just the propah motion in the sweeng, and ya shot ees moah likely to go straightaways down the fayahway. (Swings club) Blimey, that's a shot right theyah... Again, meedle of the stance, ahms bent sloghtly fowahd, and take ya nohmal sweeng. So, give it a go - see if thees helps you to get a few moah pah's.

Reasons I do not understand British people: 1) They speak too fast. 2) They do not vocalize. 3) Too much informal speech or slang. Obviously, not all of them. I've heard different British accents and some of them are clear and beautiful. But I hate when they just spit three glottal syllables for a sentence with 10 words.

i could imagine a lot of non british people would feel struggle when they communicate with the british people. Somehow im tellin’ the person im talking to in the voice call (btw hes british) “can i go to the bathroom” (obviously i said that bcz i couldnt understand anything he said to me and i needed to quit this call but also i just dont want to be rude) and he said yes just that.

Even without the slang or shortened words or whatever, british english is hard to understand because of the way words are pronounced in general, if feels to me english people do not open their mouths or something as much as americans, a friend of mine says they always sound like they are eating someting
