so, there are a few things i would like to say about how this game works from my experience modding it. this will answer a few of these things. 5:16 the reason for this is to a different collision model then the visual that is displayed. often, collision maps are much bigger then the visual map, so nintendo made them smaller so they work better in game. 5:49 you mentioned that the level has 2 invisible walls. there are actually no walls there, it is a area in the game that when inside it it restricts your movement to 2d, by forcing you into the center of it along one axis. 6:39 and here, you mentioned how that planets disappear for certain levels. in the scenario file of the game, you can set layers, sort of like in photoshop. star one may have layers a and b only, while star two may have layers b and c. a planet can be stored in layer b and be seen in both stars, while layer a may be seen in only star one and layer c may be shown in star two. there is also a common layer for an object to appear in every star. 9:41 here, you mentioned an invisible box. im pretty sure this object is called InvisibleWall10x10 (that is what it is in galaxy). these are all over the games, and they are to prevent someone from going in this area. instead of acting like normal collision, it forces you outside of it. you can see something similar in reverse by interning a 2d area from the wrong direction. 11:36. i dont quite know why this happens, but i would love to look into it further. there is most likely an explanation to it that i could figure out. just wanted to share my knowledge. probably a lot to read, but thanks for getting this far.
@JasonTGF6 жыл бұрын
actually for 11:36 it's probably just an actual bug, Galaxy 1 is fundamentally less stable than galaxy 2 in that front, he also provided absolutely no information on why it happened or necessarily if it's one galaxy specific. I'd go out on a limb and say it has something to do with gravity and the red star's interaction with it, as it was never really used within switching gravity areas in the original game

What I'm guessing it that when you create a 3D model, the program automatically gives it a collision. When they were making the castles in the 2D sections you guys were talking about, they just didn't bother removing those collisions, which is why you can still walk and interact with them. Same goes with other stuff like the water planets or the vanishing moon. While in other places, like the unreachable house in Rightside Down Galaxy, they specifically chose to remove that collision for some reason.

Most of this stuff I knew already on my own, but great video! Here are some fun facts and random thingies you might like to hear (you probably know most of them already): Fun Fact #1: The "planet-less" Good Egg water worlds are also in Bigmouth Galaxy, and the ones that actually have a planet inside them are actually miniature versions of the Drip Drop Galaxy's planet. Fun Fact #2: I'm pretty sure the castle you never go to in SMG2 is there simply because the whole level is supposed to be a mimic of New Super Mario Bros Wii, and if you look at 1-1 of that game, you can see the castle is in the background and you move to the right away from it. Story-wise, Peach's "two" castles are supposed to be the same castle and the whole thing is just a style effect, but they had to make two separate castle models to achieve that 2D Mario effect. Thingy #3: I wouldn't exactly call that a glitched pipe, rather that's just the normal pipe object from the 3rd mission being loaded normally in it's normal spot, however the spoon platform objects aren't loaded in any other mission, thus making the pipe appear to float. Fun Fact #4: The reason for the "hole" in Battlerock's geometry is not due to an oversight; it's very intentional. It's there because that's actually the exit point from the rock for Mario in the 3rd mission; that's where you come out. In the 3rd mission that area's actually filled with a zone that isn't loaded in the other missions with collision that includes an elevator, several topmen, electric fences, and other stuff, so in that mission you can't fly into the rock geometry like in the other missions as you will just be confined within the normal level (actually I think a closed gate blocks the opening anyway). Fun Fact #5: While I don't know why the moon vanishes, that moon object is also a walkable planet object that's part of the main level path in Boss Blitz Galaxy, just before the Fiery Dino Piranha fight (put in as a sort of breather before the fight most likely. It's a slightly awkward level design choice). And also that moon object is in Galaxy 1 as well. For example, in the Space Junk Galaxy in the 3rd mission, when you take the launch star off that snowy-looking glass-encased planet, you can see Mario fly past some. Fun Fact #6: The reason why the block house has no collision is pretty obvious: there's no need for it since Mario never interacts with it. But the reason why the toad ships (Starshrooms) have collision is simply because that object has collision because elsewhere in the game Mario can walk on them, like in Battle Belt for example. The Starshroom object has collision built in because it's a multi-use platform object, not a part specifically associated with specific areas. It's used as a platform in other areas, and for Rightside Down they just copy-pasted the object into the level as a decoration. Really there's no reason for the ships to not have collision, while there's no reason for the block house to have collision. Same reason for why the pipe has collision: it's an independent object. Thingy #7: I don't know for sure why that invisible box is there, but it's probably there to prevent any possible way of the player reaching Bowser Jr's little ship. It may have just been put in there for that purpose without actually testing if the player could get there and if it was even necessary. Thingy #8: The canopy on the tree top was probably due to a simple hasty collision-application job, done perhaps just because, like this thingy #8 here is just a hasty job without much thought unlike the others, lol. Anyways, sorry if I sound like a know-it-all, I just love the Mario Galaxy games to bits and know way too much about all the inner technicalities and tricks and quirks and music and lore and whatnot in both games (even down to knowledge of individual textures; I'm serious. I can detail several different kinds of water and grass textures for example). Galaxy 1 was my first game ever apart from like Wii Fit (I got it when I was like 7) and Galaxy 2 I got shortly afterward. I didn't have a KZbin until recently, but I've always wanted to comment on your vids like this but couldn't! :( Anyways, great video! Oh also, in SMG1 there's an unused quiet piano remix of Gusty Garden Galaxy that I discovered when I got the official CD soundtrack. Well, technically the audio file is not unused, but only the intro part is used, before the piano comes in. It's the audio file that plays when Mario says "Welcome, New Galaxy" at the end of the main game, where the orchestra does a little fanfare that fades out. Well, the actual audio file doesn't fade out, but rather transitions to a beautiful Gusty Garden piano cover that is almost tear-inducing. But in the game they fade the music out before you can hear this; what's interesting is that it's still in the official soundtrack though (which is kinda rare; I'm lucky I was able to get it). I'd love to see your theories on what this was intended for; one of my theories is that it was meant for the secret Rosalina cutscene where she takes off from the Gateway planet when you get 120 stars (in the final game that cutscene plays a similarly-styled piano cover of the Comet Observatory theme instead, which is only in the Platinum edition of the soundtrack [especially rare; I don't have it]) , and that that cutscene was originally supposed to come right after the "Return to Mushroom Kingdom" cutscene and just all be one cutscene rather than it being a 120-star secret. But that's just a theory. A GAME THEOR-wait wrong channel.

I think you'd love the Wii version of Rodea the Sky Soldier. It's a lot like what you did in this video, but that's the entire game, free flight in a 3D environment. It's basically 3D NiGHTS, and the best use of an IR cursor I've ever seen. The best part is that you don't even have to hack to get to far off places. By utilizing an edge dash, a speedrunning tech, you can fling yourself just about anywhere, and kill planes are shockingly absent. Just... steer clear of the 3DS and Wii U versions which ruin everything.

A shame you didnt mention a glitch I encountered a while back. In Slipsand galaxy in SMG 2, the second star, there is an underground 2d section with interesting gravity. However, I once glitched the game to force the gravity to bend slightly in the wrong direction (keep in kind this room has the circles displaying the gravity, the circles literally bent out of place to accommodate the glitch). I ended up falling out of the room and fell for 5 minutes before dying
@tdark9875 жыл бұрын
I’m kinda surprised by how much stuff these games load in that isn’t actually needed. The Wii was a relatively underpowered system, and the Galaxy games were among the most graphically impressive, so it curious to see just how much unnecessary geometry, texturing and collision/gravity it loads despite that. Was there a technical reason why some assets couldn’t be unloaded when they were no longer necessary, or needed to be loaded even when not visible?

The water worlds of good egg galaxy having usable water isnt so much done deliberately as it is out of convenience. Spherical water is used frequently in the game, so it is extremely likely it exists a prefab object. There was no need to hyper-optimize the game, so they just sacrificed a bit if extra memory to use that water.

In rightside down Galaxy, the reason the captain toad ships have collision and the block house do not is because they're two separate objects. The house was only used in rightside down, and you could never access it, so why give it collision? The toad ships have collision because they're reused assets that you can reach in other levels.

I have a 15th discovery: SMG3 and SMG4 are the physical embodiments of the 3rd and 4th super Mario galaxy games we never got.
@Keldor3145 жыл бұрын
Some of those structures with collisions may have been prefabs. Like the toad ships - is there some other place in the game where it's intentional to be able to walk on one? If so, when they copy-pasted the object from somewhere else, they didnt bother deleting the colision mesh, so it's there too. You have to remember why games like this have separate collision meshes from the geometry. The reason is that as geometry gets complicated, there are more and more spots the player or monsters can get caught up on and get stuck and such. A simplified collision mesh helps mitigate this by just not including the random little sticky-out bits that cause the problem, while still being true enough to the world that the player doesn't notice the difference. With that in mind, think of the process of an artist designing the level. They're partway through and adding the invisible collision meshes that things need to walk on. But since the level is only halfway done, they're not entirely sure where the exact play boundary will be - it might change during testing - so it makes sense to build the mesh out further than is strictly needed, since you never know if they might want to expand some spot, and if so, it's a real bother to have to revisit the already existing parts of the collision mesh. Later on, they might tweak some of the stuff in the background to make it look better. Since at this point, the play area's pretty much finalized, they might not bother updating the collision mesh in the out of bounds area, since they're now certain it won't matter. This is how you can end up with misalignments out there. One last thing to think of is the nature of building the collision mesh itself. To make the process faster, they'll use primative shapes - boxes, cylinders, cones, and so forth - where convenient. In the case of those bottomless towers, no doubt they used a simple cylinder for the whole tower, or at least a large portion of it, and that's the invisible barrier you're banging in to when you try to sneak through the gaps in the bricks underneath where you're not supposed to be.

In Good Egg Galaxy theres a black block far away from everything else. You can see it from the planets with water with the camera.

In super mario galaxy the goodegg galaxy there is a planet you can't normally get to it looks kind-of like flip-swish galaxy.

Imagine: Super Mario galaxy 3 consists of a few of the galaxies from both games such as battle rock galaxy. But instead of it being a level with a few stars it’s a full on open world experience with the entire rock being populated inside and out

I think I have an idea of why a lor of things, like the 2D castle wall im the cloudy galaxy, has collision, even though you never walk on them. I think its because of how when you hit B and aim at the screen, you shoot a starbit. When the starbit collides with something, it needs to sorta explode. And im pretty sure they didnt want you to see starbits just phasing through walls and stuff, so they gave them collision.

I wonder what the reaction would be of the game developers - who made game areas you don't normally get to - to videos of KZbinrs actually exploring them

Boundary Break ( a channel that does this with all sorts of games) actually got a hold of a developer for one of the games he covered (I think it was A Hat in Time) and made a video of him reacting to and explaining the out of bounds findings

So a thought popped into my head watching the spin dig galaxy segment, and that was how similar the background you pointed out looks to the huge star Bowser creates in the final level of galaxy one. SO I present a theory; What if the spin dig galaxy takes place inside the cooled remains of Bowser's galaxy reactor?

There are a few Toads frozen in crystals on some planets you normally can't get to in Bubble Blast Galaxy. No one ever checks out those planets when doing these Mario Galaxy hacking videos for some reason, think you could do it in a future video? I'd really like to see if the Toads can be interacted with.

I feel like I'm really missing out by never playing through these two games. Wii controls were just so hard to work with! Even so, great video man!
